Do you ever have recurring dreams?

I have one about a huge tidal wave coming towards me in the distance. Must have had it at least 50 times in my life. If anyone knows anything about dreams, what does it mean?

I have several recurring dreams. I have the toilet one, about twice a month on average, where I'm busting for a wee,but either can't find a toilet that's clean, they are all filthy or broken,or the door is hanging off the cubicle,or they are out in the open, with no privacy. Whenever I have this dream,I always wake up desperate for a wee. I'm glad to see it's not just me who has this dream! No one I've ever spoken to has it,or they just won't admit it! The other ones I have involve water. One is where I'm in a massive, beautiful swimming pool having a lovely time, the other is where I'm trying to get somewhere urgently but I have to wade through knee deep, filthy water to get there. And I also have a dream quite regularly that I'm back at school or college, and I haven't done an assignment or some homework, and I'm getting in a real panic about it.

ALongHardWinter · 14/08/2018 18:17

Just read AnnDerry's post, and it reminded me that I've had a similar dream quite a few times, about trying to use a rotary dial telephone (I'm showing my age here!). I'm fumbling around and keep misdialling and I end up getting nearly hysterical. It sounds funny but at the time it was quite scary!

MotsDHeureGoussesRames · 14/08/2018 18:23

Also had the tooth one but they also crumble really unpleasantly when they are falling out and I can vividly feel the sensation. It's grim and really scary.

FullMetalRabbit · 14/08/2018 18:29

I have the exposed toilet one a lot - the other day it happened for real!

I was about to go and teach and there is only one toilet in the area I was allocated. I popped in (busting for a wee) and there was a massive open hatch above my head with a ladder. Clearly a service area but I had no idea if anyone was up there! In the end I just crossed my fingers and used the toilet hoping that the maintenance person didn’t suddenly pop their head down Blush

There are a lot of dream websites that are worth reading - it’s surprising how many dreams are common to everyone

rainbowruthie · 14/08/2018 18:31

I also have 'the toilet' dreams
I dream often about an aunt's house, this is the place I felt most secure and loved as a child, it always has 'extra' rooms
I have often dreamed that I am on stage and have not even read the script - imagine that is the equivalent of the not prepared for exams dreams

secrettobleroneeater · 14/08/2018 18:46

You all need to get hold of the Top 100 dreams book by Ian Wallace.
Teeth falling out, (no 2 most common dream) relates to your confidence, something's happening to undermine your confidence
Toilet dream (no 3) = some unhealthy situation in your life but you're not sure how to let it go
Unprepared for an exam (no 5) you're not living up to your own (self-imposed) standards
Finding an unused room (no 9) in dreams, your house is yourself, and finding an unused room shows you identify some potential in yourself that you're not using your potential
Hope that all makes sense, I bought the book ages ago and it's fascinating!

Yes. The basis of mine is that I am endlessly climbing up an eternal, spiral stairway, that is open on one side, with nothing but a vast, dark abyss to fall into. As I climb higher and higher, the steps become deeper and narrower, so that I have to haul myself up them, while clinging desperately to the central column on one side, terrified that I might fall off into the abyss on the other. This goes on endlessly, then I wake up.

I've had this dream countless times.

liz70 · 14/08/2018 18:58

"I frequently dream about old houses full of hidden rooms and that I live there but have only just found the rooms"

I've had that exact same dream a few times. I wake up feeling disappointed that my RL house doesn't really have secret rooms! Grin

Seriously though, I read that the house is your mind and the rooms unexplored possibilities i.e. venturing and seeking out new experiences, out of your "safe" zone. Who knows?

SilverySurfer · 14/08/2018 19:01

I used to have two: 1 where I was kneeling on a ledge just wide enough for my two knees, hundreds of feet up in the sky and had to edge forwards until I arrived at a connecting ledge and then shuffled down it, etc. 2 I discovered I owned a flat (not the one I owned and lived it at the time) in a large block. It was so realistic and from the large balcony at the back I could see the local church and a parade of shops either side of a wide road. I'm still convinced that this location exists somewhere in reality but alas probably not the flat Grin

I haven't had either for years but both used to be quite frequent. No idea of meaning.

I've dreamed this dream at least once a year up until the age of about fifteen. I'm in the Asda in my tellitubies top with a broken arm with no pants looking for my mum. It happened every year around xmas and we had a pic in the house of me with my broken arm in my tellitubbie top. Very weird when I met dp it didn't happen again

ForalltheSaints · 14/08/2018 19:03

I often dream that I am in my grandmother's house, though usually without her being there. I have not been to her village since her friend died 15 years ago, ten years after my grandmother's death.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 14/08/2018 19:05

Isn’t it strange how so many of us have the same dreams? I get the school exam one, the aircrash but surviving easily one and the extra room one. My most frequent is a lift that falls, then starts going in all kinds of directions (diagonal, sideways etc) it’s quite scary. I’ve developed a bit of a worry over lifts because of this dream.

CatAndFiddle · 14/08/2018 19:08

When I was a child I used to have a recurring dream that my Mum had left me and my 2 siblings in the car to nip into a shop. The car would begin racing down the hill and I would have to jump into the driving seat and try and save us all before it crashed into a wall.
Now I'm a teacher I occasionally have the unprepared lesson dream..or having to teach out of my subject dream.

mydogishot · 14/08/2018 19:08

I've had this recurring dream for 30ish years.

I'm piling my hair up all smooth and bright red lipstick finishes my perfect make up.
I leave home and hurry to airfield.

It's really busy, so crowded.
I push my way to my seat in the airship (!) and wait for someone.
I look at floor. Men's shoes appear and I go to look up and then I wake up! Every time!
Because of the dress/make up and airship I feel it's 1920/30s.

If anyone can interpret that, I'd be grateful Smile

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 14/08/2018 19:11

Yes I do. I have one over and over where my engagement ring snaps and all the stones fall out. It sounds like it could be symbolic of our relationship, but we're solid.
I used to have one where I'm in my local city centre, but everything looks odd and slightly different and I lose my bearings and am desperate to find familliarity. Then I see a train station and the only way to get home is by getting on a train that has a train track that stands vertically in the air and goes up past the clouds.
And another where I'm desperate to per but all the toilets are filthy and overflowing with no doors.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 14/08/2018 19:13

Just skimmed through the thread, it seems the toilet one is a common one.

SerenDippitty · 14/08/2018 19:16

Oh gosh I get lift dreams as well. Sometimes they are going much to fast, start rocking or just won’t stop at the floor I want to get out at.

userabcname · 14/08/2018 19:20

Yes I get the toilet ones, the crumbling teeth ones and tidal wave ones. Also, along with teeth I often dream my hair is falling out. And another bizarre one is that I will be merrily getting on with my day and suddenly realise I'm not wearing any shoes. Rather than thinking 'bugger it! How odd! I'll just pop home / to the shops to get a pair', I am filled with complete and utter embarrassment while I desperately attempt to hide my bare feet from being seen. Really weird.

LeafcutterAnt · 14/08/2018 19:27

If I'm finding something in real life really hard eg. Work or looking after a baby and toddler, i dream I'm trying to climb a huge/precarious structure.
Every summer i dream it's the first day back to school and I've forgotten to buy uniform so have to keep them off school and rush out and buy it.
A level / doing a performance or speech when unprepared.
Trying to find somewhere and getting lost, trying to dial a number on a phone but can't
Have had terminal illness/ concentration camp nightmares in the past.

DifficultDIY · 14/08/2018 20:31

Most dreams are anxiety related

DifficultDIY · 14/08/2018 20:35

Including my recurring dream that I have arrived to work and just as I reach the top floor, that I somehow got all this way without realising I am naked. Then, as I wait for the lift to get down and to escape out of the building, everyone is waving at me and giving me a cherry hello, so I pretend being naked is perfectly normal and I do it all the time, as I smile and wave back, feeling desperately in need of hiding myself somehow!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 14/08/2018 20:36

I seem to end up on a beach every night, usually have my family with me. I used to have reoccurring stressful dreams, like being accused of something I haven't done and being sent back to school as a punishment. But over the last year it's been random stuff with a beach thrown in at some point. It's great, like getting a free holiday every night!

Whistle73 · 14/08/2018 21:57

I have the hidden rooms dream frequently, but in my dreams the secret rooms are horribly haunted and have been shut up and left by a previous occupant. It's truly terrifying!

Ditto the blocked and public toilets.

Lastly I too have the dream where the road goes up and down vertically. So horrible!

Chattycat78 · 14/08/2018 22:04

My most common one is either I’ve got an exam tomorrow and I haven’t revised, or I have to hand in my university dissertation tomorrow and I haven’t started it.....Confused

Firefly2 · 14/08/2018 22:06

Whistle I have that same dream about the rooms being shut up and haunted and left like that from a previous owner! It’s like it’s a huge house but I just won’t make use of those other rooms as they are terrifying!
