AIBU to leave unwanted household items outside for people to take if they want them

Sometimes I do this. Mostly books occasionally small furniture items. I put a post on a neighbourhood site saying please take if u want them. If not gone by end of day then I make other arrangements. Vile Mail says I'm a middle class fly tipper. I'm feeling a bit miffed.

If you're concerned try this site uk.freecycle.org/ you can register in your local area

I left an old suitcase (perfectly good condition) and a clothes drying rack out last week, were gone within a day. Easier than taking them to the charity shop or dump.

RedneckStumpy · 14/08/2018 11:51

In the US we do not get bin collection. We have to go to the dump once a week.

However the dump has a swap shop for stuff like this, the only rules are that stuff works, and you are limited to 3 visits a weekend

Nobody does that here. It’s a National Trust village and such behaviour would be an outrage.

So not actually out here in the real world then grin

Such a fetching shade of green!

😂

People do this round here all the time. During the recent dry weather I've seen a nice sofa with matching chair, garden furniture, a fridge freezer with a note that it still works, a lawn mower ... all sorts go things. They always go somewhere, and good luck to the people who take them.

Fame at last. Lol

It's standard here in Australia. You leave unwanted items outside for a few days, and someone usually takes them away.

We have left bikes, toys, etc out and within 48hrs it's gone.

I got a beautiful dresser from outside a neighbour's house a few yrs ago.

longwayoff · 14/08/2018 12:52

Well I leave them outside my grade 2 listed front door but English Heritage hasn't yet complained to me.

Happens all the time round here.

Friend once got rid of an entire kitchen that way.

SparkleBag i decorated my Gracia flat that way, whole flat! Very mix and match, but comfy and welcoming. I remember there was a bar on C/Carme called Muebles Navarro which was furnished with some fabulous finds off the street: chairs, bar stools, lamps the lot.

SparkleBag · 14/08/2018 14:03

elQuintoConyo No way, we started out in Gracia too! We used to donate a lot to the bank by the market too. That was an awesome place and helped loads of people, such a shame they turfed them out.

I use a baby skip bag. I put stuff in it on my drive for a day and the stuff usually gets taken

Willofthesimpletons · 14/08/2018 14:11

I did this over the first part of the holidays. It was bloody marvellous how quickly it went and saved me a trip to the hell hole that is our local tip.

MiddlingMum · 14/08/2018 14:18

We've done this and so have our neighbours. Nobody leaves anything out for long as it's always taken. If it wasn't taken that day I wouldn't leave it out overnight.

You need to be careful though. Our neighbour had acquired a secondhand fridge. They had given it a good clean and put it outside to air in the sunshine. Ten minutes later it was gone Shock

I don’t trust the weather Smile

Seriously though I do virtually the same - list goods for free via FB and they always get taken.

I live on a foot route to a local tourist spot and am planning on building a little book giveaway box. I love the idea of people randomly getting a new book on their travels Smile
