To still go blackberrying?!

I know I'm not BU Grin but does anyone else still do this? They're in season now and it's one of our favourite family pastimes that we all enjoy doing! Kids too. Went today, juicily ripe. Might make a crumble tomorrow with what we've got left and not scoffed already

DH and I were out on a bike ride the other day and ran out of water. We just kept stopping to eat blackberries instead as they were so juicy and refreshing.

TurquoiseButterfly19 · 14/08/2018 10:36

Of course! I get lbs of them and make cake and gin.

busyboysmum · 14/08/2018 12:54

Can I ask for people's best cake recipes please.

Made gin last night and it is lovely.

Have pots of jam.

Going to try jam tarts this evening.

GGGRRRR!

Who climbed our gate and picked all mine?

rainbowsandsmiles · 14/08/2018 13:20

Ariella - not guilty! That's just cheeky, you don't go climbing into people's gardens and pinching them!

It's the norm around here - for sloes, blackberries, elderflower etc.

Just as long as its not on private property. Some twat person once decided to help themselves to the blackberries in my garden as we were next to a public bridleway. I was raging!

New neighbour cropped brambles growing on boundary, which previous neighbours assured me were mine. I was ill in bed that day, or might have prevented the clearance - not only on their side, but right down my fence about as far as reachable.
What kind of person clears anything while it's fruiting?
I'm not a blackberry fan myself (seeds), but have friends who really look forward to the harvest, especially this year when the berries were so large.
Luckily I'd been picking them as they ripened, and popping into a bag in the freezer until friend called again, so there was about a kilo for the family, but friend was upset at the empty stretch of fence.
There's one fruiting stem left near the base of my fence, so I plan to try burying it in the border for next year, along with a low framework to train any further shoots.

biscuiteater · 06/09/2018 15:16

I used to pick them and once chopped a blackberry up out of interest to see inside and it was full of maggots! Checked the others and they all were the same 😲 Has put me off ever since. To think I'd been eating them yuk.

google blackberry/sloe/rose hip recipes. Weren't wild rose hips collected during the war by children to ensure enough Vit C?

I live in the country (south) - blackberries have been out for a month but in shade they're still to come.

Can I recommend nettles? DGM made nettle soup. It's delicious if you like things like spinach soup. Top bit of young nettles. Onions, potatoes and about a bag of nettle tops. Great with cream or (I prefer) yoghourt to finish.

I live down a remote country lane. Yesterday someone parked their van on the side and 6 people got out and picked absolutely every single blackberry from the bushes. They literally ripped off branches, left a mess, put them in industrial looking boxes and drove off. So none left for my kids Sad

MotherofKitties · 06/09/2018 15:22

I used to do this with my dad and brother at my grandparents when we were little; I loved it. I'm hoping to do the same with my daughter when she's a bit older - they're lovely autumnal memories Smile

JoeElliotsMullet · 06/09/2018 15:54

I can't walk past brambles without picking them! They are glorious this year, juicy fat beauties almost everywhere you look.
Kids love it too, even the 3yo will muck in (although she eats most of what she picks). I love it. I often wonder how many thousands of tons go unpicked and wish there was some kind of brambling hoverpack I could get so I could reach the big fat juicy ones without getting torn to shrebbons.

bellinisurge · 06/09/2018 16:11

Brambles by my garage . Now jam.
Rosehips from my front garden. Dehydrated for cuppas in the winter- sadly not enough for jam.
Delicious foraged free food without much effort.

agnurse · 06/09/2018 16:33

Why not? If they're on public property they belong to everyone.

I don't know if you have this in the UK, but here in Canada we have U-Pick farms. Essentially you can go and pick fresh fruit and veg, and then you pay per bucket or other container for what you've picked.
