Citalophram should I go back?

I was on 10mg of citalophram for 9 years and I was fine on it until I got some health anxiety earlier this year after having a baby, because of this I was put on 20mg, the health anxiety has gone, I had CBT for it too. After a few months of being on 20mg of citalophram I hit a brick wall and became numb, emotionless and depressed literally over a few days. I was switched to sertraline 50mg straight away. Sertraline isnt working for me at all. I wish I never moved from the 10mg of citalophram!!!! I am now just as depressed, numb, detatched, can't remember anything, I can barely recognise myself in the mirror it's awful. My question is if 10mg of citalophram worked for 9 years, surely it can work again?

It's difficult to say really. The best thing to do would be to discuss with your GP and decide what in best for you. In my experience depression and anxiety cannot be resolved with medication alone. Numerous studies have shown that environmental factors such as relationships etc have as much, if not more affect on Mental Health than drugs.

Have you been referred to any counselling etc?

Hugs. I'm sorry you are feeling rubbish.

It might work again, or it might not. Generally I've found that GPs are happy to follow my lead if I have an opinion on that sort of medication.

It might depend on how long you've been on the latest medication.

You should go back to the doctor if you don’t feel the sertraline is helping. They may put you back on Citalopram or they may suggest trying a different one altogether. It does take several weeks to know if it’s working though, and the changeover period can be awful.

I’ve been on ADs for over a decade and have found they can stop working after a while.

A couple of years ago I switched from Venlafaxine to Citalopram (which id been on years ago) to Fluoxetine to mirtazepine. The mirtazepine was the one that finally worked for me. (all under guidance from my GP) It was a horrific six months trying to find the right one though. But finding it honestly saved my life, got me back to myself and back to work.

Hi, I’m on 20mg citalopram have been for nearly 2 years - haven’t hit a brick wall with it (yet) but am being encouraged to try 10mg, which I have been worrying about it in case it ceases to work. But the other day I just thought I could try it and see and always go back up to 20mg. So I suppose I am saying why not try going to 10mg citalopram and see what happens. The sertraline isn’t working for you so in a way you’ve nothing to lose? Please take drs advice for switching, doses etc tho. My Dad was on 40mg citalopram a day and one day just decided not to take it — it was a bad idea!!

It's not that straightforward, sadly. Your brain can change the way it responds to chemicals suddenly or gradually. You can definitely talk to your doctor about coming off the sertraline and ask whether you can try going back to the citalopram, but be aware that it might not be effective in the way that it was before and you might need to try other drugs or combinations of drugs until you get your new correct dose. Good luck.

I was on Citalopram about 15 years ago, it worked in combination with CBT. I stopped taking it then went back on and it didn't work. Got switched to Fluoxetine and felt dreadful so jacked it in. Haven't taken anything for over 10 years now. I seem to remember my CPN telling me that SSRIs only work for a limited time so maybe I'd reached my limit. Hope you feel better soon.
