To want to challenge the school - uniform affordability

whyhaveidonethis · 13/08/2018 21:21

My DS2 is starting secondary school in September at a different school to the one DS1 went to. Today I bought the compulsory items on the uniform list and frankly I am pretty disgusted at the cost and the compulsory items. Not only the blazer but the school jumper, rucksack, toe, PE bag, PE uniform (shorts, tracksuit trousers, T-shirt, and rugby top) have to be embroidered with the school logo along with the grey in every way the same as ASDA own brand school trousers have to be embroidered. WTF? £24.95 a pair for school trousers that would otherwise cost £6 in the supermarket. You can only buy from one supplier and so they have you over a barrel. The PE bag alone cost £12.95. The rucksack £22. It's basically a bloody blue rucksack I could buy for £10 elsewhere. Why the hell does every pupil need to have identical bags? Surely that's a recipe for disaster? They also all have to have the school coat which is embroidered with the logo. I didn't dare ask how much that cost.

I'm hopping mad. How is this in line with Department for Education guidance which states schools should: consider the cost, the available supply sources and year round availability of the proposed uniform to ensure it is providing best value for money for parents....and, ensure that the PE uniform is practical, comfortable and appropriate to the activity involved, and that consideration is given to the cost of compulsory PE clothing.

I am right on my high horse about this. I have a good income but live in a deprived area. How on earth do those on benefits afford this?

WIBU to legally (or otherwise) challenge the uniform policy?

Re the Doncaster situation. I would like to see links between uniform suppliers and MATs investigated...

Saracen · 13/08/2018 23:21

Wow, that is terrible, OP. Sounds like you feel able to afford this (but quite rightly don't feel you should have to) but recognise that there are other people in the area for whom it is a severe hardship. You'll be doing a good deed if you stand up for them. It may be that the school is trying to use the uniform policy to exclude poorer families.

Write out an itemised list for them of what you've bought and what cheaper alternative you think would be acceptable, and compare the total costs. I bet when you add it up, it is even worse than you think.

whyhaveidonethis · 13/08/2018 23:25

Sarajevo i** fully intend to, and I will send it with my letter to the board of trustees. It's frankly ridiculous. I can afford it but I earn a lot more than most.

It's also environmentally unfriendly as it can't be handed down.

Find the government guidance copy it and send it to the govenors with a covering letter, asking for advice about their current costs.
Our local school also uses a supplier, but they are a little cheaper this year, than previous years, but would be much better if they let you buy the school badge to attach to a blazer.
Having had children in sweatshirts and t shirts, and blazers and shirts, I’m not tired of the more formal blazer, which has ridiculous provisos attached (unable to remove the blazer, except with individual teachers permission, must always be worn out side classroom. Teachers also on the edge of school grounds, pulling coats of children in previous years)

I’d like them to move back to polo shirts and dark sweatshirts again, to be more relaxed and comfortable in school.

PinkyprettyDaisyFlowers · 13/08/2018 23:28

I’m now tired of the formal blazer shirt arrangement, I meant

OpiningGambit · 13/08/2018 23:48

It's selection via the back door.

This. If you ever see a primary school with expensive uniform, you know they're trying to weed out the poor kids. It's shameless.

The irony is a lot of state secondaries think they're emulating private schools, when the private schools are often a lot more practical and have a big market in second-hand uniform!

Smoorbs · 14/08/2018 00:14

Don't complain. I've tried, twice. I've been onto two schools about uniform and even taken it to the governors. They threatened me with expulsion from school property and told me I wasn't allowed to contact the staff at the school anymore. It's not worth the fight.
I just ignore the uniform options now and by the jumper, and PE kit. Bugger d if I'm buying £17 shirts and £34 skirts. They can put my kid in isolation if they want, she doesn't care.

HelenaDove · 14/08/2018 00:27

What the fuck are these arsehole schools going to do when 3 million more families get transferred over to Universal Credit.

What about the families who are already on it. Are schools going to have the room to put loads more kids in isolation then?!

Smoorbs what you have experienced is disgusting. Angry Your post is heartbreaking.

Miraclesparklestars · 14/08/2018 01:06

Our school have changed the uniform this year as they've changed the name.
Everything is compulsory, down to the socks which have a logo on them too!

we had to buy:
skirt - £35 PER SKIRT!
blazer - £89.50
shirts - £15 for two
tie - £11
jumper - £19.50
bag - £23.50
PE shorts - £15
t-shirt - £12.50
tracksuit bottoms - £16.50
jumper - £17
socks - £6.50
Pencil case - £7.50

The school gave us:
One skirt
Blazer
tie
PE shorts
PE t-shirt
Bag

We were brought this because we're already at the school and we are very grateful, but those starting in September or with multiple children at the school, the cost is outrageous! We wouldn't have been able to have afforded it in full ourselves. Everything has the logo on too, apart from the shirts, which are simple plain white ones, so we can buy those anywhere (we already have them!)

Enko · 14/08/2018 01:07

OP is it a private or grammar school? That sounds restrictive for a state comp

I have currently got children in 3 different secondary

1 a grammar school
1 a Accademy
and 1 a State comprehensive.

the grammar school has the LEAST compulsive logo uniform.

The State Comprehensive has the most AND changed uniform when I had girls in year 11 and 9 there so I had to go out and purchase new uniform as they no longer allowed parts of the old uniform (logo had changed)

Academy wants logo shirts however we got dd3 4 when she started 2 years ago and they still fit and look near perfect fine.. They have washed and kept far better than any other shirts from supermarkets etc

Personally I don't have a issue with them wanting logo uniform I just would prefer being able to buy the logo to sew on where needed. Rarely possible.

I will say that the uniform in the Academy is by far the nicest.

imnotreally · 14/08/2018 01:12

In Wales if you're on benefits you can get a grant for £125 the year they start but presumably a blazer and PE kit isn't going to last 5 years so I'm a bit confused.

OkPedro · 14/08/2018 01:20

I've just found out that m&s and a local store have stopped selling the school shirt
I now have to go to the official uniform shop Hmm where they charge €25 for one poxy shirt
We have to pay for books which this year is working out at €100
And this is primary
I'll be screwed when they start secondary!

HelenaDove · 14/08/2018 01:20

i just read a couple of posts out to DH.

"treating some kids like they are an underclass" his words.

IntoTheDeep · 14/08/2018 01:34

The uniform policy at your school sounds excessive. Especially different colours for jumpers depending on year group!

My DC go to private school and the uniform there is less restrictive than yours.

Things that we have to get from the official uniform shop are:

Blazer
Tie
Jumper (optional)
PE kit

Uniform is the same for all year groups, so outgrown uniform can be passed down to younger pupils.

Things like shirts, trousers, skirts, PE bag, backpack / satchel can all be bought from supermarkets / high street. Bags have to be a set colour, but the school’s fine with pupils customising bags (e.g. with key rings) to help them identify their own bag quickly.

Pissedoffneigh · 14/08/2018 01:42

Dc old academy school in the catchment of a huge area of deprivation cost just under £200 for the secondary school uniform. The PR kit was over £70 from what I remember.

Logo skirts, logo tie, logo blazer, logo socks fancy blouse you can only buy in certain places, logo coat, logo sports socks, logo shorts, logo tracksuit and it went on and on.

Dc current school give you the blazer, skirts and blouses can be bought in Tesco.
PE socks have a logo but they've relaxed that this year so people can are just wearing dark socks. Shorts are cheap and pe top has a logo and was about a tenner. Tie was £5.

Pissedoffneigh · 14/08/2018 01:42

PE not PR!

OhTheRoses · 14/08/2018 07:26

When ours were at primary they had a lively uniform mostly available through supermarkets but with a logo'd jumper. The less traditional leftie primary up the road had no uniform but Gap (trendy then), flashing trainers (new then and expensive) were de rigeur. On teacher asked a class of 9 year olds to put their hands up if they didn't have a "Baby G" watch for a survey.

Parents know they will have to buy uniform, their dc would need alternative clothes if there wasn't a uniform. Do your teenagers really wear £5 supermarket trousers at weekends? Do you really think they'd be happy with that five days a week if every day was a mufti day?

whyhaveidonethis · 14/08/2018 07:33

Ohtheroses there is no way I would pay £25 for everyday trousers for my children. I pay on average £10-15 for jeans from high Street stores that are good quality and last until they grow out of them. I also buy cheap T-shirts and jumpers. A standard mufti day outfit would cost less than £20. So yeah, I'd much prefer that

whyhave how old is your eldest?

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/08/2018 09:14

God no we Love a in leggings and t shirts. I said charity shops and stock up when it's 3 for 2 in h&m. I do hand me downs and sale and voucher codes . I do not spend the kind of money on clothing that I do in uniform.

My biggest grievance I that I don't like being ripped off. I would spend 60 + on a pair of dms or sturdy walking boots. Cos I know they would last and I could pass them.down to dd2 and I could probably by half a size bigger as They are boots and get the wear out of them.

I resent paying fifty quid on school shoes which have no other purpose and won't survive for dd2.

I don't spend 30 pounds on one item why should I pay 30 pound a for a blazer ?

And no there isn't a choice. 2 of the local schools have the same online supplier. And the one that seemed to acknowledge that parents arent made of money now seem.to have a more expensive uniform than when I looked at it a year ago.

I've spent over 200 quid so far and still not done.

It's taken weeks and a slow turn around with returns and refunds.

Much more hassle than free click in collect in next where they take back in store.

And it's always girls tht are more expensive. 17 quid for a skirt I've had to pay. Of course I need more than one so all in all 34 quid on 2 items. That shirts pe shorts 2 pack , 2 skirts , in next for dd1 at primary. The primary school skirts she was wearing cost me 6 quid in Tesco. I could get 5 and still have change for 34 quid.

One thing these schools don't factor in is how rubbish these suppliers can be. It took over 2 weeks can receive the items cost 4 pound in delivery. I then had to return (another 4 quid). Good job I was paid again cos if I had had to have waited the 10 days for a refund in order to reorder and it took another two weeks it cuts it bloody fine time wise. Hi also am yet to receive an item and that may not arrive at all. Don't use suppliers who can't keep up with the demand ffs. It's stressful enough worrying about starting school without worrying about detentions and isolation cos the supplier ran out of stuff and you are missing parts of your uniform.

And the other thing that pissed me off with what could other wise be sourced from.a variety of shops is that the starting sizes in some of these suppliers are too big.

When you can try on a range of items you can find one that fits. Narrow it down to 2 approved items that either start at too large a size or are so poorly made/badly cut they are not fit for purpose then you are pretty fucked. But Hey I guess that's how you rip off families cos you then make them buy the skirts at 17 quid a go ..

Here's a thought. How about concentrating on teaching

The worse the school performs the more they faff about with the uniform

Tomatoesrock · 14/08/2018 09:15

Ohnothanks Dublin in Ireland. Lots of schools do not do book rental and can cost lots more. All books are paid for the year by rental or purchase.

DerelictWreck · 14/08/2018 09:25

OP can you pick the badges/logos off the things that don't have a colour trim and stick them on ASDA uniform for next year?

Etino · 14/08/2018 09:28

It’s obscene, isn’t it. Imagine if that money was spent on books for each child, not that it should be, all resources in state school should be centrally funded, but what a ridiculous set of priorities.
Angry

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 14/08/2018 09:32

I've been yelling about the same. Had to buy new jumpers for DS and they are dreadful quality, can't be tumble dried, cotton, embroidered ones at £20 a jumper. They'll last no time at all.
Why can't we just have a reusable badges d buy cheap supermarket ones!

LeafcutterAnt · 14/08/2018 11:24

I used to think the uniform costs for dd's school were ok, but over two years the PE uniform has gone up 22% for exactly the same sizes. I'm not sure how much inflation has gone up in that time. Anyone know?
I'm buying for dd2 starting in September and unfortunately a new head of PE has changed items and added new items of compulsory PE uniform that dd1 managed fine without. So it's felt a lot more costly for the PE uniform this time around. The dds are the same size so hand me downs not an option as dd1 still needs hers. The design/items are different anyway. I feel a bit resentful about it this time round
