What will straighten my unmanageable frizzy birds nest hair?

Posting here for traffic. I have very frizzy/curly/birds nest hair. Some sections are ringlets and other bits are straight. It is basically a mess. I have tried numerous different things to try and straighten it/make the curls hang looser rather than a frizzy birds nest type mess but nothing has worked. I have done 2 x keratin straightening treatments (which didn't actually straighten my hair), phytorelaxer etc. None of these products have worked. I can't afford to do it every few months in a salon and have had bad experiences in salons anyway so wouldn't risk spending £££ for something which will last a few days. Is there any product that actually works and will give me nice straight or at least manageable loose curls and not this birds nest frizzy mess I currently have?

Redken do the anti-puffiness cream which I really love - it stops your hair doing that horrible puffy thing that happens when it comes in to contact with a drip of water

Otherwise, Coriolis straighteners are the best things ever!

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 13/08/2018 18:42

Have you tried the steampod straighteners? For first time ever, I can only replicate what a hairdresser does, but in far less time and it lasts several days at a time, whereas salon straightened (ghd, not chemical) only ever lasted overnight at best

blurredspeech · 13/08/2018 18:45

I have a straightening brush which works quite well but I want a product that i wont have to use every day. My hair is really dry and brittle and just awful. I hate it.

Do you use sulfate shampoos and silicone hair products?

Frogsareawesome · 13/08/2018 18:48

Have a Google of the Curly Girl method

DunkandEggAgain · 13/08/2018 18:50

I strongly advise you to buy Lorraine Massey's The Curly Girl Handbook. Its an eye opener as to the science behind curly hair, why its easy to frizz up, what aggrevates it, its porosity etc etc. Its been invaluable in this house and as a family of curly haired people our hair has never been better.

I have had the yuko system done 3 times. It permanently straightens the hair. It’s a Japanese system, takes several hours in the salon and very expensive £250 or more depending on hair length. Made my curly frizzy mixed hair poker straight though for as long as it takes to grow out. You can wash blow dry/or leave and go without straighteners being necessary, I found it amazing for my hair and used a hairdresser who did yuko treatments only, she was brilliant. Could be worth a look.

Olaplex.
I swear by it

butlerswharf · 13/08/2018 18:56

Ah I was about to say Yuko too. You'll definitely have no frizz at all. Mine lasted forever. It takes virtually all day at the salon to do though!

BaaRamU · 13/08/2018 19:02

Another advocate for the Curly Girl method here. If you can't afford the book right now, there're some groups on FB that are incredibly informative. Try Curly Girls UK and Curly Girls! (Conditioner-washing group for women)

Mmmmdanone · 13/08/2018 19:07

I've managed to tame my frizzy mess with an in -Styler rotating iron. Obviously you have to style it after washing/ drying but as I only wash my hair once or twice a week I can do this and have smooth curls when I want. I love it. Takes a bit of practice but I can now do it in 20 mins.

DunkandEggAgain · 13/08/2018 19:12

Yes, curly websites are the next best thing. But you know, I thought I knew enough when it came to all things CurlyGirl but after I eventually bought the book from eBay and read the first 4 chapters, I realised I actually didn't have a clue Grin. She broke it all down and then the CurlyGirl method suddenly just clicked into place. I've scolded myself for not buying it sooner.

DunkandEggAgain · 13/08/2018 19:13

Sorry, I've just read back my post and it reads like a PR review.Hmm

britnay · 13/08/2018 19:18

(Disclaimer: I work at Boots) I don't have curly hair, but loads of customers recommend this as its cheap and apparently works very well: www.boots.com/boots-essentials-curl-creme-250ml-10088417
Apparently not all Boots stores stock this as I've seen some quite excited people stock up when they saw that our store did.

NorthenderNamechanger · 13/08/2018 19:33

If you haven't already tried it, give up SLS and silicones (find hair products without it. Boots has loads) and don't use heat. No hot styling tools, no hair dryer. Don't rough your hair up with a towel, squeeze gently in an old tshirt instead. Lack of straightness isn't the problem. Most likely, lack of moisture is.

Confusedbeetle · 13/08/2018 19:34

Moroccan Oil, argan oil cant beat it

Namechangeforhair · 13/08/2018 19:35

Curly girl hair method. You need to know the porosity of your hair though.

DesignStatement · 13/08/2018 19:57

What high street brands of shampoo don't contain sulphate and sodium?

Fatted · 13/08/2018 20:02

To get mine straight the only thing that works is a blow dry and then straighteners.

To curl it, I use the boots curl creme along with defusing it. Also need to make sure it has a good cut with layers.

I've just accepted now my hair needs work and effort to make it look nice.

TeaAddict235 · 13/08/2018 20:08

But the curly girl method is NOT a failproof method. You do have to adjust your products according to the weather/season, it can be quite intense the further up the curly scale you are etc, depends on water hardness in the region, etc etc etc it is not the holy grail as some people keep purporting. Hmm

Benandhollysmum · 13/08/2018 20:26

Frizzy Lizzie here too, I just straighten the life out of mine twice a week and tie it back.
I wash hair 3 times a week tho so by second day it’s not a frizzy poofy cotton wool head

HeavenlyEyes · 13/08/2018 20:29

another vote for curly girl method - wash with approved conditioner and use a gel or mousse. That Boots curl creme is very drying so I would not recommend that at all.

Namechangeforhair · 13/08/2018 20:36

Teaaddict235 np it's defintely not. I'm still early days and really hoping it works for me.

ShirleyPhallus · 13/08/2018 20:39

Curly girl method was awful for me

emsiboob · 13/08/2018 20:44
