To think someone must have already solved this storage conundrum?

We've just moved into a new house, and the kitchen has 15 of these bottle-sized shelves (see photo). We do drink wine but we don't collect it or store it for long periods of time. Even at Christmas we're unlikely to use more than 5 of the shelves (especially as there is also a bottle shelf in the fridge for white wine!).

As you can see from the photo, we've already started using the shelves for other things, and it would be great to find some storage boxes or trays to make efficient use of the roughly 11x11x30cm holes.

We can't be the first people to need something like this. Has anyone got any ideas of where to find what we need? I can search the usual websites, but it's difficult to filter storage-box searches by size and shape.

Start buying more wine?

I'd check the shelves and see how easy it is to lift them out. Take some out and it's a great place to keep cookery books.

Or go to b & q, wickes, ikea, etc and look at kitchen storage within the kitchen design area. By removing all the shelves you may be able to get those tall thin wire baskets that slide in/out or even find a matching door and use it that way. It's defo got some uses but you will be hard pushed to find individual storage basket type things.

Oh idea! What about nice sturdy cardboard wine bottle holders you can get as gift bags. Right dimensions, cut one side out and you have a handy sliding draw thing with a string handle!!

We had them in our old home. Usually a few with sparkling water, a fruit cordial or two. And then kept a 500ml bottle off olive oil and one of Sunflower in the top two for easy access when cooking.

Could you not just take them out and add 3 larger shelves for baskets or something if that's more suitable to you?

Jars filled with arts and craft supplies. Rolled up tea towels.

LeftRightCentre · 13/08/2018 16:48

I had the one in our kitchen taken out. Replaced with a slide out space for spices and sauces.

My wine rack is full. But doesn't stay like it for long..lol.

Pizzaformytea · 13/08/2018 16:51

Shoes? Or store your cling film/tin foil etc there.

Exhausted4527543 · 13/08/2018 17:07

needyourlovingtouch that's definitely the sort of thing I need, but it's just a bit too long - it would stick out of the end by about 3 cm.

I brought those wooden wine box things with string handles - google that and images come up. They look good, but only useful for auite little things.

We have slide out cupboards in that same size space. Kitchen is from wickes.

morningconstitutional2017 · 13/08/2018 17:13

Luckily I've only got around 6 of these daft little spaces. I don't drink wine either and I use them instead for kitchen paper (not all rolls fit), bin bags, scrunched up disposable shopping bags - not exactly the height of elegance. Maybe I should put my beer in!

There’s a great online shop for plastic boxes that I’ve used to get storage boxes of just the right size. www.plasticboxshop.co.uk.

Very good service and quick delivery too.

GnomeDePlume · 13/08/2018 17:15

Skippii we have those baskets, they are incredibly strong IME. We got a lot of them for our new kitchen and they made the storage far more useable compared to shelves in the base cupboards.

catmumof1 · 13/08/2018 17:15

We keep cling film, tin foil, sandwich bags etc in ours. The bottom one (ours are eye level so you would probably do top) is reserved for worktop over-spill, things like DPs sunglasses and keys that can never make it to the key hook...

Deux thankyou! Flowers That site let me search by dimensions and came up with something perfect at a bargain price which is what I was hoping for a I need 10 of them: www.plasticboxshop.co.uk/craft-storage-boxes-c4/handy-baskets-c49/studio-basket-rectangular-2-01-p3861

I roll up my hand towels and tea towels and store them in there. Hand towels sort of match the kitchen so actually it looks ok. One towel in each little cubby hole...

BlankTimes · 13/08/2018 17:29

Just googled for plastic storage boxes, maybe contact them and ask if they have anything suitable, there's no minimum order.
