They're good on Twatter for directing you to relevant information but there are some that get used so often that just make me think ODFOD.

Anyone else sick of hashtags?

Twatter Grin Freudian slip!

TheStoic · 13/08/2018 13:39

I hate most of them. I only like them if they are for a shared experience, like a world event.

melj1213 · 13/08/2018 13:41

YABU ... how does it affect you if people use hashtags?

Don't like them, don't use them but they're hardly an imposition

QueenOfIce · 13/08/2018 13:43

Oh god, there's always someone who wants to helpfully point out "how does it affect you..if you don't like it blah blah blah" I'm sharing my opinion. It's doesn't have to be yours #ibetyouloveahashtag

I only like them when each word is capitalised

I actually think hashtags have an interesting place in online discourse. Aside from their primary purpose of directing the reader to useful information, they are often used as a kind of subversive commentary made by the author on their own instagram post or tweet. I often see hashtags used in an ironic way to undermine the sentiment of a post, or to add another layer of meaning. I think that’s quite a clever and funny aspect of them and I enjoy it.

VladmirsPoutine · 13/08/2018 13:51

I thought this was going to be about the Insta huns or some sort of #MakingMemories shite.

#YANBU

TheStoic · 13/08/2018 13:54

Mostly they are just used as a ‘reason’ for posting a pouting selfie.

I'm sharing my opinion

And I'm sharing mine.

I noticed you didn't actually answer the question though - how does it affect you if people use them?

You asked in AIBU about hashtags. I think YABU. That's the point of posting in a public forum.

VladmirsPoutine · 13/08/2018 13:58

I see it didn't take long for the #pofaced crowd to turn up Grin

TheStoic · 13/08/2018 13:59

Oh god, there's always someone who wants to helpfully point out "how does it affect you

There is one weirdly aggressive/defensive person on almost every thread.

The amount of #soblessed i see everywhere is astonishing.

QueenOfIce · 13/08/2018 14:05

I feel incredibly grateful for my life and I know I'm #blessed but I really don't see the point expressing that to everyone else via a hashtag. #pointlessandboring

I do digital marketing.

I love the hashtag. Far prefer a well tagged tweet to one without!

LanceStatersGold · 13/08/2018 14:11

It depends how they’re used.

Lots of my business comes to me through Instagram. Hashtags = increased engagement = growth of account = growth of business.

So their (successful) use is a bit of an art form and their primary function is to be able to see and explore content that belongs together and you wish to see.

I also like a random made up hashtag sentence as part of a caption. It usually displays a certain sense of humour and I think the use of ‘hashtag xxx’ is a really interesting conversation about changes over time to language and dialogue.

QueenOfIce · 13/08/2018 14:11

If it contains a link to information I agree a hashtag is useful. It's the non useful ones that get on my pip.

Bluelonerose · 13/08/2018 14:13

I don't understand them at all Blush
All I no is it's got something to do with Twitter but I don't understand Twitter either.

DesignStatement · 13/08/2018 14:15

Genuinely in ignorance of what a hashtag does to an internet post (ie what it does/what it means in front of a word). Can someone educate me please?

Huskylover1 · 13/08/2018 14:28

I guess there is a point to them on twitter (which I don't use, because I don't understand it), but now people use hashtags on Facebook, that don't link to anything Confused What is the point?

I noticed that they used them on the Love Island Texts as well, which obviously didn't link to anything, although they did give hints as to the undertone of the task or message.

I think eventually (if not already) they will be used all over the place, not to link to something, but to emphasise a point.

Simplistically it sorts posts that have used the same hashtag. So if I look for #worldcup I can immediately get a list of all tweets that have used that hashtag. I can then sort further.
