Is this crazy or am I just lazy?

Hopefully this won't turn into another camping vs not camping thread. I was staying on a campsite this week in my little motorhome. I was away for 3 nights in a lovely, scenic site with a nice, safe playground and kids sporting facilities, so it was great for DS to just go out and play all day long.

On Saturday around noon, a group of three families arrived and set up 3 enormous tents, with huge awnings gazebos, etc. They had fully packed 3 big cars and 2 trailers with the stuff they needed. Then they set up their own 'garden spaces' around their tents with wind breakers and set up chairs and tables, fairy lights, barbecues etc. It took 2-3 hours to get their whole set up in order. On Sunday morning they got up early, spent at least 90 minutes dismantling everything and were all gone before 11.30am. It just seemed like sooooo much work and faff for less than 24 hours camping. That's not to mention all the work of packing up and unpacking at home. And it had rained very heavily the night they were there, so their tents and outdoor stuff must have been soaked when they packed it away. I know they could be touring, but that would mean they have to set up and dismantle repeatedly during their holiday, which seems equally crazy to me.

Tbh, unless it's during school term, I try to go away for a minimum of 3 nights at a time in my camper as I think it's a lot of faff for just two nights. And all I'm doing is moving clothes from one wardrobe to another, food from one cupboard/fridge to another and making sure not to forget precious teddies and my pillow. I have windbreakers, comfy garden chairs, a giant parasol, etc in storage in my motorhome but I only go to the bother of setting them out if I'm not staying put for a few days of if I think they'll get rained on.

Full disclosure: This particular group of families really pissed me off on the Saturday afternoon as they kept on playing football right up at the side of my camper and repeatedly hit it with their ball. On the third time it happened I looked out so they could see I was inside and only then did the adults make any pretence at keeping the ball away. So I'll admit I'm just going to think badly of them anyway.

Nah, I'm with you. Waaaay to much effort for one night - however magical!

We do 2 nights if it just me +dh and 3 min with dc.
I confess we have Fairy lights though!

ShinyMe · 13/08/2018 12:15

Maybe they planned to stay longer but left early for some reason.

I have fairy lights too. I think they are lovely. And I like making my camping space lovely and homey. I just think it all adds to a massive faff if you aren't going to be staying long though.

Mine were knocked off my camper on Saturday evening, which I suspect had something to do with their football.

If it makes them happy, what's the problem? It's not like you had to help them.

Can see why it would be annoying with the football, but I would have said something instead of glaring out the window.

Oh i never understand this either. The (slight) appeal of camping to me is its simplicity.
I kind of get that it’s fun to set up if you like that sort of thing but the packing and unpacking at home would send me over the edge.

Bloody hell that seems like a monumental faff! They must have their reasons for only staying so short a time though .

Just be glad they've gone Wink
