Should I leave son home alone?

Hello,

Long time lurker, first time poster. I have a dilemma, my son has come down with chicken pox. Spots started to appear this morning, he’s feeling pretty sorry for himself but that’s to be expected. The thing is I’m out of supplies, milk, bread and there’s only about 2 doses of calpol left. So the reality is that I need to get to the shop.

There is one directly across the road from my house. Literally across the road, 30 yards from my front door.

AIBU to leave him napping in the morning and nip to the shop for maximum 3-5 minutes? Or should I just bundle him up and take him?

This is a perfect opportunity to meet your neighbour. Everyone loves to feel needed.

If he was asleep and you were only out for five minutes, then yes. I have done this. My child is still alive.

victoriaspongecake · 12/08/2018 22:13

Glad its sorted for you.
On Mumsnet it is likely that you will be run over/taken by aliens/kidnapped/etc etc if leaving a child safe in a house for 5 seconds......

CantankerousCamel · 12/08/2018 22:13

Absolutely go.

Excellent result!

We were referred to social services for popping across the road (shop is literally directly across the road about 20 seconds away) for milk when our son wasn’t feeling great.

He was 6, so no, I’d say not.

hiddeneverything · 13/08/2018 11:15

Definitely leave him

TheEmmaDilemma · 13/08/2018 11:16

Excellent!

I can be away on the toilet for longer than 3-5minutes so I would have said that if the shop had it all ready for you, then that is fine...

kaytee87 · 13/08/2018 16:41

@SchrodingersMeowth what did social services say? I'd be surprised if they were interested in one incident.

SchrodingersMeowth · 13/08/2018 16:49

They weren’t, the only reason anyone even knew is that my DS attends Speech and Language therapy and he told them (thinking he was a big kid now and that I trusted him!). I was open about having done it, SALT woman was appalled and told us she would be referring, next time we saw her she said that SS said they wouldn’t be following it up.

I felt awful though and it terrified the life out of me and I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through that worry.

We do have SS input because of some other reasons (I missed 2 of my Son’s appts because I was recovering from surgery Hmm ) but they’ve never mentioned it.

SchrodingersMeowth · 13/08/2018 16:50

And actually it was the same SALT woman who referred us for the appointments. So maybe other people actually wouldn’t be so shocked

Thislife2018 · 13/08/2018 21:19

I was referred to SS for a bruise on my active crawling into everything 8 month old (now she’s 5 and we also know she bruises easily). They kept telling me I must not leave my children unsupervised. I was in the next room about 2 meters away when it happened!

I would leave my 7 yo but not my 5yo. But sounds like your sorted now!

Rosie2356 · 13/08/2018 23:34

Definitely dont leave him it only takes secomds for something to go wrong, unlikely but possible... Id call the shop and explain, see if they can run it over for you / pay over the phone.... Reward them with your custom therafter, failing that ask if someone can pop by and drop it off or sit with him, all else fails bundle him up and go together x

kaytee87 · 14/08/2018 07:00

@Rosie2356 this was posted on Sunday....

Nanny0gg · 14/08/2018 07:21

@SchrodingersMeowth

She referred you for missing appointments??

I hope they gave her What For for wasting their time!

LifeHackQueens · 14/08/2018 07:27

That's great they were able to pop across. Calamine lotion or sudocreme would help with the itching. Poor little lad will be sick for a few days.

Surely she’d be at the neighbour’s doorstep longer than she’d be at the shop? (I know this is sorted now though)
