To have left this for my neighbours?

This will out me if they see it so I have name changed.

We have new neighbours in our flats who share a communal area.
Other neighbours have complained about them including two local businesses for various reasons but I've not really had much to do with them. They won't answer the door when you knock (another neighbour who doesn't even live in our block hammered on the door when they had a complaint about them).

Anyway I came downstairs a few weeks ago and the new neighbours bike was there. He asked me if it was okay there. He was nipping in and out at the time so I presumed he meant while he nipped in and out to do what he was doing. I said I had no issue as I could clearly get passed it but I needed to be able to get passed.

This worked fine and the bike went for weeks. It occasionally reappeared for short periods but would go again so no issue

However the last few weeks he has been completely blocking me in with his bike, his friends bike and other equipment and items. The hall is narrow and in order to get in our property we have to physically climb over his and his mates bikes and equipment. My child is disabled and has hurt herself and we have had to turn visitors away who haven't been able to climb over to get in to see us.
They have scratched all the walls of the hall and created a big hole in the wall.

Tonight I've come back with food shopping and had to climb over two bikes to even get in. My child has fell over and hurt herself and I've broke my phone as it fell out while climbing over.

Seeing they won't talk to me I have left a note stuck to their door saying how unhappy I am,that they are preventing access to our own property, blocking a fire escape and injuring my child. I'm really quite pissed off tbh.

Interestingly on the days his child and partner are over he doesn't do it so that she doesn't get hurt.

Aibu to think he must realise how difficult it is for any child to have to climb over two bikes daily never mind one with disabilities?
If they ignore this what would you do next?

Alternatively, pile them up in front of their door so they can't exit their doorway without moving them.. SEe how they like it.

A lot of the fire services do free fire safety checks. If it dangerous they would get in touch with the landlord at least that how it works were I live

Must be a common problem. In my previous flat, we had a couple that had two kids and therefore two prams. They'd put both downstairs by the stairs and completely blocking the path. The crazy thing was, one of the kids grew out of needing the pram many months ago, and they didn't bother packing it up. Just left the pram unused for months, gathering dust and spiderwebs.
The management company were informed and put up notices telling them to move it. They ripped the notices down and just carried on. The cheek of some people! Hope karma bites them on the backside.

The local fire service will do a free safety check. Ask them to text you, not ring the bell, so there's no time for the fuckers to pull their bikes indoors.

I think the fire brigade might have authority to remove them immediately. Sadly I mean the bikes rather than the neighbours.

I'd have those bikes outside on the street quicker than you could say bike. Why on earth are you facilitating this behaviour?

NaomiNagata · 12/08/2018 22:39

I had th8s in a flat I used to live in. No one ever did anything to stop it until we had an actual fire alarm in the middle of the night. The whole building trying to get out over 3 bikes piled blocking the main entrance hall. It was late, people had just got out if bed and ran down so not really awake and sensible do trying to move them to all duke out was not working. The fire engine turned up while people where still manouvering and the bike owners finally got the bollocking they deserved. They never did it again. I'm sure they'd have carried on if we hadn't had a fire since complaining about them didn't ever result in any action.

LilQueenie · 12/08/2018 22:41

report it and take photos to back it up. Go to local council or whoever. Put a note through saying the bikes are being moved outside. then actually move them. Its a fire hazard and they could well be evicted.

bertielab · 12/08/2018 22:42

I'd go and knock and ask them to move it and ensure the hallway is not blocked again.

Daisymay2 · 12/08/2018 22:50

Unless it is a Council or Housing Association run development , it isn't the Landlord or the Letting Agentswho can deal with this. The Managing Agents are responsible for Communal Areas. If they don't have any notices up, which they should do, the Landlord ( or Letting Agents) should be able to tell you whothey are as they pay the Service Charges to them. Managing Agents are responsible for Fire Safety and should deal with it- but the Fire Prevention people can also act.

Put them outside on the street.

Laureline · 12/08/2018 23:36

I also like the idea of systematically destroying the tires, alternatively.

timeisnotaline · 12/08/2018 23:44

a note saying all blockages in the Hall will be in the street Thursday. Ask a friend to come around thursdqy and move everything so it isn’t tracked back to you. Deny all knowledge but say about time someone did something.

Pringlecat · 12/08/2018 23:47

Do you own or rent?

Chances are, he's breaking the lease. Whoever owns your flat (whether that's you or a landlord) needs to check whether that's the case and take appropriate action. It may be you have a housing association, management company or factor - whatever the set up, take it further the legal way.
