Traffic noise - what is reasonable?!

On holiday in the countryside in an air b&b place. It’s on the road through the village. Not an A road. Just a tiny road. It’s an extension to old house but no double glazing.
Cars go past every few seconds (I know as I kept counting when I couldn’t sleep last night). I can hear the cars really LOUDLY as no double glazing. Possible it’s worse as it’s on a corner and cars are accelerating / deaccelerating.

I didn’t realise so much traffic in the country. 😭 so noisy.

It has 19 five star reviews. No on mentions this. Is it normal? It is driving me crazy.

Can’t wait to get back to my quiet London house!

Normal of the house is on a road!

You notice cars more in the country as it’s not a constant noise like it is in more urban areas.

TopShagger · 12/08/2018 14:50

Er, yeah. The house is close to a road, vehicles use roads. This is not unusual. The fact it's only single glazed will exacerbate the problem for sure, though. Until you said single glazing I genuinely wondered if you were next door to me!

I understand you haven't said you're going to do this, but in case you're thinking about it - it would be a bit unfair to leave a shitty review based on this alone.

Are you a super light sleeper or something?

TheStoic · 12/08/2018 14:52

I understand you haven't said you're going to do this, but in case you're thinking about it - it would be a bit unfair to leave a shitty review based on this alone.

Still mention it, though, so future guests aren’t blindsided like you were.

Early this summer I spent a night in a B&B on the main road through the village, which happened to be cobbled, and had sheep carriers going through at about 4am. And since this was in the heatwave, we had the windows open.

If traffic noise at night is going to trouble you, you need to do more research before booking, at least fin the property on Google maps and see whether it's on the through route or on a side road.

Dontfartbackinanger · 12/08/2018 18:24

I’m surprised none of the other reviews mentioned it. So I think I will. I don’t want to leave a shitty review but I wouldn’t have chosen it to go on holiday with a toddler who needs a nap etc if I’d realised. I’m quite a light sleeper - every since I had kids I think. But it was more stopping me get to sleep. That and the church bells every hour through the night! But I will try not to be too much of a grinch!

The postcode on the air b&b site was the wrong one (in a different but nearby village Confused) so google maps didn’t help. The location discription was also of this other village too which is a bit unhelpful.

If there was traffic every few seconds all through the night I wouldn’t describe it as countryside...
The location stuff is odd though.

Seeline · 12/08/2018 18:33

Sure you stayed in the right place?😁

TopShagger · 12/08/2018 18:34

Eh? So they've described a property in a different area, a different village and different postcode? If that's the case then of course point it out in your review - it would probably constitute false advertising (whether intentional or a genuine cock up) but that's not what your OP said.

Also, 19 5 reviews so that's a minimum of 19 people who haven't found this to be a problem. That doesn't mean you're wrong, but maybe not be too harsh eh. Are there any less than 5 reviews?

Dontfartbackinanger · 12/08/2018 20:29

Yeah in the location on the listing it says one village and postcode, it’s actually in the next one along with a different post code. The owner sent the correct info the day before we travelled (which I didn’t fully comprehend was different at the time and which made getting here frustrating!) It is odd.

This is definitely countryside to me! There’s a church, a pub and a shop! That’s it.

I live on a quiet road with double glazing so I guess I’m just not used to it. But I was surprised no one mentioned it in reviews. So I guess my AIBU was would I be U to raise this in a review if no one else has. Or I am just used to quiet.

There are no reviews less than 5 stars!

I won’t be a dick about it - I’ll leave 4 stars and raise the traffic noise as something to be aware of if you’re a light sleeper. And the fact that it is in a different village! Grin

SarahMused · 12/08/2018 20:34

Are you sure that you are actually staying in the same place as the other reviewers? It seems suspicious to me that you are staying in a different location than described on the listing.

Dontfartbackinanger · 12/08/2018 20:48

It’s definkteky definitely the same place! The owners names are on the reviews and the photos are the same.
It’s probably about 1-2 miles from the other village.
It is odd. DH and I were spectulating that it was for security?! But it’s probably just a mistake they haven’t noticed / bothered to change.

Dontfartbackinanger · 12/08/2018 20:51

And there are descriptions about it being opposite a church. Which it is. The church bells rang (for over 40
Minutes this afternoon - we left at that point as DD had been woken fom her nap and I couldn’t take it anymore!).

I’m pregnant, grumpy and trying not to be!

OP posts:
Dontfartbackinanger · 12/08/2018 20:52

Ah here we go again - dong dong dong - and it’s not even the fucking right time!

Chalady · 12/08/2018 20:55

How many more sleepless nights have you got?

Is it S.West?

ivykaty44 · 12/08/2018 20:55

How many cars go through the village?

Dontfartbackinanger · 12/08/2018 21:00

Lots and lots and lots. Like one every few minutes. But it is on a B road I now realise. The original village (where it is not!) is just on those lovely tiny white roads. Sobs.

A couple more nights. Unless we just think sod it and go tomorrow. I’m going to use the white noise app on my iPad that I have from when DD was a baby tonight. That actually drowned out the peeling church bells when on full volume earlier!

OP posts:
Dontfartbackinanger · 12/08/2018 21:01

Every few seconds, not minutes. Well maybe one every 30 seconds!

OP posts:
Dontfartbackinanger · 12/08/2018 21:01

Tonight does seem quieter though.
