English bulldog for active ish family?

Sorry, I'm not sure where to post about dogs! Just wondered if it is unreasonable to consider an English bulldog as a dog for a family that is fairly active? Not hiking active but country park walks etc? Online varies between saying they are fine to walk in cool weather to some saying they just sleep all day? Help! Obviously doing huge amount of research before considering any dog breed. So far have ruled out high energy breeds as we live in a city and can t commit to 3 hrs exercise a day. Thanks in advance!

Dustand Rubble nice to see another TT fan!

The thing that I like about them is that they seem so adaptable. They can be really playful, love agility, leap into your arms when you come home but then be happy to just snooze at your feet all evening.

A friend is on her 4th TT. This one adores children and she takes hers to sessions at a residential school for children with severe learning disabilities. She's brilliant, really steady, will jump up to sit on the lap of a child in a wheelchair so he can have a cuddle and is an all round good egg.

They seem very biddable and easy to train. They're not the brightest light on the tree, but having had 2 lakelands (who are very bright indeed) I'm not convinced that intelligence in a dog is altogether a good thing. Learning how to open doors for example - not a good trait in a dog. Wink

OP, have you ever thought of visiting Discover Dogs?

All the breed clubs have stands where you can meet dogs, owners and breeders, ask all the questions you can think of and so on. It's at Crufts in Birmingham in March and in London in November.

Have had a long think and taking into account this thread have ruled out the bulldog and Frenchie and are focussing on whippets. Going to contact the breed club and see if I can find some local breeders to chat to! Thanks everyone!

I think getting bulldogs, pugs and similar is bordering on immoral. They have been so badly bred, in order to get the "look", that they can barely breath. Creating a demand simply perpetuates the cruelty inherent in their breeding. There are loads of breeds that will suit your needs without encouraging cruelty.

Windsweptly, please post puppy pics when you eventually find your puppy. Especially if it's a whippet. All puppies are lovely, but whippet puppies are exceedingly cute.
