Happy to let her buy a ticket though after she made it clear that she uses a scooter.

Absolutely disgusting. My brother (large power chair user) has given up on public transport now, it's basically inaccessible.

HelenaDove · 01/09/2018 03:02

Its 2018 FGS The transport companies have had plenty of time to sort this. The will just isnt there.

You're being dim, tillytrotter1. Nasty too, but dim.

Where do you think to people with mobility problems are, if they don't have aids like scooters? Oh that's right, not out and about where you deign to notice them because... mobility problems.

Sirzy · 01/09/2018 14:00

Ds is just in a SN buggy, nothing massive but certainly no bigger than your average wheelchair. I had to use park and ride recently and that reminded me why we avoid using public transport. The best was the train we got to London which didn’t actually have a space for wheelchairs and staff didn’t know when the next train with a space would arrive so we had to stand by the toilets the whole time.

We also get lots of people checking for the blue badge when they see just me and DS getting out the car.

Tilly, I'm fat so obviously I'm just lazy... I'll ignore my rheumatoid arthritis, secondary Fibromyalgia, the heart condition that my RA has caused (and will potentially kill me before my children are independent) and stop being lazy will I?

That attitude sums up what I have said before about the general perception about mobility scooter users not being properly disabled and is a typical example of casual disablism here on mn.

TheBigFatMermaid · 01/09/2018 14:30

I would like to see a law that says only those with genuine need should be allowed to clutter the pavements on mobility scooters, and being too fat to walk is not a good reason generally. I refuse to believe that since the introduction of cheap scooters there are so many with mobility problems in the population.

Oh dear tilly, you would judge me as being just too fat to walk but I have been this fat for a long time and until three years ago, worked in care, a massively physical job. The job I started in the 80's, when there were not hoists available easily and the work of moving people from bed, to chair, to bath etc just had to be done. I blame that for ruining my back and making me unable to walk very far now.

I don't have a mobility scooter, as in spite of them being 'cheap' to you, they are out of reach for me, on PIP. OK, my DP works, but that is what pays the rent etc, there is little spare money.

Go and ooze back under your rock Tilly. You are filth.

Redpriestandmozart · 02/09/2018 19:09

I honestly blame Madge from Benidorm. I got my mobility scooter just after the first few series were aired and I got so many stupid comments like 'stand back let Madge through' that I didn't use it again for over a year favouring my wheelchair, people weren't so pass remarkable with it.

Propelling a wheelchair takes a lot of energy, I prefer to have somebody with me for the hills, rough ground and thick carpet. The scooter gives me so much more independence but it is at a cost of mockery from the public who think mobility scooters are for the lazy :(

She hadn't just booked assistance, she'd been personally visited and told by the in-charges that this wouldn't happen to her again.

HelenaDove · 03/09/2018 16:36

They obviously lied to her.

I wonder how many of these abusive fuckers also vote for people to lose their disability benefits.

I bet some of them are very keen on people being found FIT for work yet not so keen on actually enabling them to GET to work.

IF they are well enough to obvs Im just making a point.

I use a Powerchair on trains, often the space provided is barely big enough for an ordinary sized chair. Often I find the space filled with cases or cycles.

I've travelled nationally and can only think of two companies with consistently big enough space to accommodate both a wheelchair user and a mobility scooter simultaneously and in the case of one of those, the mobility scooter can only fit in the (admittedly large ) gap between carriages.

The same is more than true of buses which are an incredibly tight fit and involve being a good driver and being able to do a blind reverse around a pole with a tight gap - and the problem with the buses is that too many drivers will still refuse you access if a pushchair was on first, flouting the law.

The fact is, that as things stand, public transport is barely accessible to wheelchair users and pretty much totally inaccessible to scooter users. To change this you would pretty much have to change bus and train layouts and replace every bus and train in the country which is NEVER going to happen, as shitty as it is.
