To consider the Sleepyhead?

Pregnant with first baby and have a lot of time on my hands in the evenings to constantly research all the shit on the market.

I’ve decided on the Chico Next 2 Me. I keep reading the Sleepyhead reviews and their magical properties.

Do people use them during the night? If so, from what age and are they worth the hype?

Obviously my primary concern is product safety.

The SleepyHead is the only ‘nest’ suitable for overnight sleeping. It has been rigorously tested.
I did a HUGE amount of research. I felt 100% safe using it for overnight sleeping (supervised is when you are in the same room - which baby should be even for naps in the first 6mths.).
Lullaby Trust categorically would not endorse anything that isn’t a flat bare mattress (there’s too many people would then use cheaper versions and alternatives) but have said Sleepyhead has a 100% safety record.
We used the Sleepyhead Deluxe until DS was 7mths as a co-sleeper and we now use the Grande is his own cot. We’ll be taking it on holiday and it will be used to transition into a bed eventually. The sides are totally breathable and the base exactly the same as a cot mattress.
As you can tell I’m a huge fan :)

Loved our (borrowed) one. Only used it for day time from birth but it was excellent and handy to have downstairs

SteviaStephanie · 11/08/2018 17:02

I loved my sleepyhead with our first. It did help with the sleeping.

But now they aren’t deemed safe because of overheating, I read. So we didn’t buy one for the second :(

BellaMoo · 11/08/2018 17:16

DS be one of the few babies it didn’t help at all - we persevered for a good few weeks but it didn’t make any difference to how well he slept.
We did sell it on for nearly as much as we bought it for though.

LlamaPyjamas · 11/08/2018 17:20

It doesn’t meet safe sleep guidelines so I didn’t use one. Lots of people use them without incident. It’s up to you if you want to take the risk.

Eggoispreggo · 11/08/2018 17:43

@OriginalGeordie is that the baby event starting this Thursday at Aldi? If so, I'm there!! I really wanted to try a sleepyhead but the price is ridiculous and I know you can get them second hand but it would be great to try out a cheap Aldi version to help see if they would for our baby 😊

Amanduh · 11/08/2018 17:44

No product is SIDS proof or ‘safe’ for overnight sleeping. It’s as safe and breathable as it can be pretty much. I still wouldn’t use one but some people swear by them. The ‘my baby didnt sleep but my second one had a sleepyhead and did’ is purely co-incidental imo. However I do know of babies that like to feel snug and secure and the sleepyhead helps or babies that didn’t sleep without it and do now! You obviously do take a risk though. My baby was fine in his moses basket and slept well so even if I wanted to take the minimal risk I wouldn’t waste that kind of money on one unless I was desperate.

Amanduh · 11/08/2018 17:45

Oh and a quick tip - the Aldi ones are available to pre order online tomorrow before they go on sale Thursday!

MamaHechtick · 11/08/2018 17:53

Both DC had a sleepyhead. DS was in his in the hospital, in the bed with me.
My own brother died due to SIDS and I checked everything I could find on the sleepyhead including pushing my own face into the side and back of it. I wouldn't have used it if I wasn't confident that they were safe.

Goldenphoenix · 11/08/2018 18:25

Had a sleepyhead with DS2 and loved it, used it from birth in a next to me cot, highly recommend it!

Tweakanddashi · 11/08/2018 18:30

I had the sleepy head and I wouldn't say that it was amazing, but it was ok. I was bed sharing anyway but it helped me to feel safer in the first few weeks.i stopped using it because DS2 liked to breastfeed lying next to me and it meant that I could BF while being slightly more asleep (DH is an adult sleep specialist and always goes on about sleep not being a binary state). Anyway I couldn't BF while lying down with DS in the sleepyhead so I gave up with it.

SteviaStephanie · 11/08/2018 18:48

One thing I did notice is that our first didn’t roll until about 6-7 months, whereas the second rolled at 3 months. Could well be just coincidence, and it certainly didn’t hold our older one back, but there is some speculation that sleepyheads delay rolling because the baby is held in place all night.

Loved the sleepyhead. My baby hated her crib until we got it. We ended up buying the bigger version as well. My child is one of th best sleepers I know. I can’t credit the sleepyhead with that but I think it did help a lot at first.

TightropeWalk · 11/08/2018 19:23

They are suitable for sleeping in if supervised and apparently in the same room, asleep can be technically classed as supervised?! I really wanted one, as my last 2 baby’s were terrible sleepers but this baby settles really well. I’m glad I didn’t waste £200 on a potentially unnecessary, unrecommended nest.

LaPufalina · 11/08/2018 19:35

OP I had one with my first, used it for daytime naps and to co-sleep until about 6/7 months (husband banished to spare room, single duvet on my side) and I found it fantastic. Got a chicco next to me to use with it for impending DC2 (as 20 month DC1 sometimes comes in my bed if she's poorly or has a nightmare).

Elbbob · 11/08/2018 19:48

I considered getting one before my pfb was born at the start of this year. Glad I didn't waste the money. My midwife recommended creating a makeshift one with a thin rolled up towel with a muslin over the top which we did. Used this in DD's cot at night and moses basket in day for about 6-7 weeks. She slept like a statue but if she had turned her head/rolled I'd have removed it. After removing it she continues to sleep mostly through the night, as before.
