To ask people not to feed my horses?

That's it really. I have signs up explaining that one has a medical condition and that treats such and carrots, polos and apples could kill. But it's the holidays and families are walking past more often and just can't ignore it. Even grabbing a bit of greenery and offering it over the fence... it could be a poisonous plant. The thing is, my horses love a bit of a fuss, there is no need to wave the remains of your sarnies about to get to meet them. It's no different to offering food over a garden fence to a dog, but people just don't see it in the same way. If I didn't have the signs I could kind of understand it.
I'm not running a fucking petting zoo.

There are some dickheads about aren't there?
Yes, horses love carrots, apples, polos... but my little mare has a disease called Cushings that a) costs me a fortune in drugs and b) makes her very suceptible to the above mentioned laminitis, often triggered by sugar. Should she come down with laminits she would be in crippling pan and something called the pedal bone could actually come through the sole of her hoof. A terrible condition to manage and potentially resulting in her being put to sleep.

This explains the signs.

People are arseholes unfortunately.

I’d go for a warning sign claiming they have a terror contagious disease.

Of course you aren’t. But if your fields back onto any kind of public right of way, good luck with that.....

I used to turn mine out into a field backing onto a country park. One of my ponies had the people in the adjacent cafe trained as to what was her favourite ice cream - people would go in there to buy something To feed the horses and the cafe owner would check if it was my horse and then sell them to appropriate ice cream. How she had arranged this I’ll never know, it had been going on for months before I found out about it! Luckily she suffered no ill effects from it.

The only answer is to graze them well away from well meaning but Ill informed public.
