AIBU to be lazy-ish redecorating my hallway?

We are moving in about 2 years so don't want to spend a ton of money on the house - but we do want to make it nice and appealing to buyers.

Our plan was to get the hallway replastered and painted, however this is a big, messy, expensive job requiring scaffolding due to the height, all old paper removed, old plaster repaied, etc.

Last night I was watching George Clarke old house new home and he put up textured paper in a hallway, then painted the bottom half of the hallway navy blue including the skirting boards.

Should I do that with mine instead? The problem is I have areas of textured paper that don't match. Should I try to replace these first and then paint the top half and ceiling white, the bottom half and skirting boards navy?

Any other ideas please? Thank you, I am hopeless with decoration and decisions so really appreciate any advice!!!

Seriously don't be doing all that work if you're moving in two years. Just a lick of paint, and make the ceiling white and you'll be fine.

I wouldn’t bother getting the hall replastered if you’re thinking of moving; in all likelihood the price you’ll get for the house wouldn’t reflect the money you’d spent on it. I’d paint light colours, as pp have suggested. That’s not offensive to buyers, whereas navy blue woodwork isn’t a) to my taste nor b) easily over-painted.

I’d go neutral and I wouldn’t bother replastering if you have other priorities. White wood work, pale neutral on the walls but not pure white as it can be a bit stark. A new runner that has the same colour as the stair carpet in it, maybe a thin subtle stripe.

For the light, I’d go for a simple shape in opaque glass and maybe a large mirror between your doors.

Sorry, not between the doors but to the left of the furthest door as it looks a bit dark down there.

Bluntness100 · 10/08/2018 16:04

Yes a mirror is a good idea to add light. I've two in my hall way downstairs. They aren't supposed to face the door though, bad luck or something.

The poster who said not white is right, it can be stark. A cream is warmer or a very grey.

I really think once you get thr ceiling white and the wallls all one colour it will make a huge difference.

I've just recently painted mine in farrow and balls blue green which I love love love, but it's an old house and it suits the hallway. It's this colour in the attached image (clearly not my hall)

Please don’t paint the woodwork (skirtings/doorframes etc) anything other than white! Blue would be a huge mistake and would put people off buying, I promise you.

PhilODox · 10/08/2018 16:15

Ooh- seriously, don't replaster- huge amounts of mess for you!

Ok, there's a light on Dunelm called Agistini which is the type I was thinking of. Google "pendant cluster glass shades" and loads come up (all prices!! Dunelm was £99)

Mrsramsayscat · 10/08/2018 16:18

I would paint the ceiling white and possibly freshen the gloss work. I actually quite like the green.
The change the pendant.
You could make a big difference by paining the doors a greenish white to match.

Finally I'd add a nice runner which I could take away on moving, and also some pictures to hide any mismatch.

flumposie · 10/08/2018 16:19

I watched the show also. it worked for them as their hallway was huge. I would go lighter for yours.

Whatsnewwithyou · 10/08/2018 16:48

PhilODox I love that light fixture but 2 of the 3 reviews complain about how low it ha t's. I do get the general idea, thank you!

So how about ammonite (colour matched version) on the walls and ceiling, pure brilliant white on the walls. And also a light fixture similar to this photo of a living room with ammonite walls ...inspiration.farrow-ball.com/itemdetails.aspx?id=23812

Bigger art and a mirror at the end of the hall.

Ideally ceiling would be white but realistically the ceiling and walls the same colour would be much easier and I could do it myself with a paint brush and roller on an extendable pole.
