aIBU to suggest that using the term ‘postnatal’ in relation to depression that a man might feel after the birth of a child is ridiculous and belittles the experience of women

We discussed this before quite recently - there is a whole long thread on it.

Unfortunately when terms for new mental health conditions are given out they are blunt. It takes a few years before the terminology is redefined with a proper definition of the signs and symptoms.

Btw The dictionary definition of "postnatal" means "after birth" with no denotation of what sex it belongs to.

I didn’t see the other thread as I’m not on here all the time. I cannot see how it is helpful to use the same terminology. Women experience different physiological changes after birth which are a factor. Men do not.

I don't mind. If the primary factor in the depression is the arrival of a baby (birth, broadly speaking) then it seems alright to me.
