My DS (23) has pretty much stopped playing xbox live. his "avatar" on xbox is a black guy. while he was using this avatar he said he heard a lot of "fuck that, dump the N\***" and had a hard time being accepted into groups. He then changed his avatar to a white character and was accepted into groups based only on his competence.

There is no AIBU here tbh it's more the desire for white folks to examine their privelege.

I don't think there is as much casual racism now as there was in the 70s - it was just so prevalent and in your face then (on the streets, on TV). But there's still plenty about, probably more subtly because it's no longer acceptable to be racist in public. Certainly the stats on career progress, jail terms, education etc don't seem to have changed much in decades.

Absolutely. Have been with my 'foreign' husband for 20 years and the actual racism he receives is from doctors/solicitors/staff at places like the post office and register office. People who would make out that they know better. Really shocking and it makes me sad for our children.

No. I disagree.

As a child in the 70/80s I would hear adults and children being called Paki in the street and in the playground. The local shop was referred to as the Paki shop. 😡

I have been a primary school teacher for 20 years and I have never known this to happen in school in the 00/10s. I don't live where I grew up but I have never heard it where I live either.
