Up until three years ago holidays were what other people did. We had taken dd2 on 3 holidays in her ten years. One was a sun holiday the other paid gor with tesco clubcard vouchers in budget caravans. Then she went to school and holidays were even more out of the question due to holiday companies cashing in on draconian rules regarding absence from school.

Fast forward to now and ok our financial situation has improved and we go on holiday at least twice a year. Next year we are planning a trip abroad.

Why? Because one Sunday we were bored and decided to just look around the local camping shop. We bought a tent! £250 and we have a holiday home dont mention the hundreds since spent on stuff we probably don't need and we set off on our first adventure. 3 nights an hours drive away. DD was either 9 or 10 and she cried all the way there because she was scared of sleeping in a tent. Within ten minutes of setting up she was off exploring and made friends and that was it!

We are very British and often return to the same place but tomorrow we are being adventurous and going to north devon instead of south Grin We are taking our bastard dogs who i wont leave with anyone because one is a little gobshite and i dont trust him not to bite someone else if they piss him off and we will set up our little holiday home. Its a last minute booking and im a tad dubious but come evening I'll have had enough gin not to care if we are huddled in our tent in the pouring rain, playing cards or god help us, board games.

The next day we'll put on our waterproofs and head off to explore. We'll clock up a few miles i daresay and visit alot of pubs. My diet and liver wont thank me Blush if the weather improves dd will go swimming itherwise we'll find some dramatic coastline and look for interesting stones. If the rain clears well sit around the campfire and roast marsh mallows and ill read my kindle because my phone battery will have died. Dd may be a bit sulky about hers but i wont care because work wont be able to call me because someone has screwed up in the lab Hmm

Dd will be hoping to spend time in the play area and meet other kids her age (doesnt always happen) there a river/stream to paddle in.

The dogs will be alternately ecstatic and muserable.

I will be happy as larry because my holiday during peak summer time will have cost £223 for a whole week. My anxiety after about day two will cut me some slack and I'll be able to face whatever shit life throws st me on our return.

Whats not to love?

However we have a mini oven with two rings so cook easily when camping

TellMeDinosaurFacts · 10/08/2018 08:05

North Devon is the best. Head to the cliff railway at Lynton/Lynmouth if it’s overcast and you want a bit of rockpooling/pretty town scenery: www.cliffrailwaylynton.co.uk/
Nearby Watersmeet is a beautiful riverside walk with rocks etc to scramble on:

Metoodear · 10/08/2018 08:06

Shednik

The issue is it’s likey you wrre staying at a shit camp site

If you try a five star one where a private toilet and shower is included with your pitch I think you will find Italia more agreeable

ToffeePennie · 10/08/2018 08:06

I adore camping now!
Every year my husband and inlaws go to a festival near us that we camp at for 5 days. Our oldest holds the record of being the youngest (3 weeks) baby ever to have camped there overnight. It’s where I learn to breastfeed and so much fun. There’s always something to do.
I can’t wait for us to go now, even though we aren’t going for another two weeks!

TellMeDinosaurFacts · 10/08/2018 08:07

Sorry- posted too soon!
www.nationaltrust.org.uk/watersmeet
Watersmeet is Nationals Trust but no entry fee. You can walk there from Lynmouth too. Heddon’s Mouth is another gorgeousness coastal walk. And the valley of the rocks in Lynton is paradise for kids who like to clamber over rocks (slightly terrifying coastal path though!)

Shednik · 10/08/2018 08:09

I think a comfortable bed would massively improve the experience for me. Any ideas?

TitsalinaBumSquash · 10/08/2018 08:10

Could anyone recommend a tent for a family
of 6 (ideally with separate rooms for sleeping) that won't get damp and wet inside that I won't have a nervous breakdown trying to put up.

Also (stupid question alert) so you then have to book another pitch (is that the word?!) for another tent type thing for your stuff or does that live in the main tent? I mean cooking stuff and chairs etc.

LEMtheoriginal · 10/08/2018 08:10

Lynton is definitely on our list. Dp took me on a surprise horse riding holiday tgere about 15 years ago so we will most definitely go there. Maybe sunday. Any recommendations for a good pub roast?

I’m off next week for a couple of nights, it really can be done cheaply. Last tent was freecycle, new trailer tent was £50 from Facebook, just needed cleaning! Site in cornwall we’ve found for next week is £11 a night!

TheFallenMadonna · 10/08/2018 08:14

We are just coming to the 3nd of a fortnight camping in Brittany, and we are going away again over the bank holiday. We camped late May too. We have a trailer tent so I have a bed with a mattress (not the foam thing that comes with the tent), king sized duvet, electric hook up, fridge, my coffee machine...
DH and I have built up from a two person hiking tent (I carried the poles, he carried the canvas) where the rucksack had to stay outside because it was then or us in the tent.

Loved it then, love it now!

Metoodear · 10/08/2018 08:15

Shed their are also loads of places that do this style of camping

I used to love it, but it's the utter hassle of dealing with needing a wee in the night, especially when it's raining, that finished me off!

@tislina we have a vango avington 600. It is supposed to be six man but id say just four adult size people comfortably. It has two "bedrooms" although we just leave the partition out and have obe bedroom as i get claustrophobic otherwise.

It has a generous living area - room for table and chairs if its rainy and a couple of inflatable chairs. It doesnt get too damp if you remember to open the vents and it has huge "windows" again good for claustrophobia! It has a porch area where we keep all the cooking stuff and do the cooking.

Some sites allow a gazebo or pop up shelter although there is usually extra charge. We dont use one though.

Cotton tents are better at not getting damp but they are much more expensive.

Unless your wild camping but we have one of these and we just empty it in the morning who can be ducked with wondering round in the dark

Chuggachuggatoottoot · 10/08/2018 08:21

missmouse I used my dc's potty Wink

Metoodear · 10/08/2018 08:22

I think often people not liking camping is down to them buying some cheap small tent off agrogs

Them not having the correct set up

And the combination of a shit camp site and trying to camp in like November in a filed in a forest

The camp sites I go to you can even pay somone to put up your tent while you go for a beer

User5trillion · 10/08/2018 08:22

We have a camping toilet, basically a bin with a loo seat. I put a bin bag in and 2 nappies. Its for wees only but is great for the kids when they need a late night or early morning wee. Bought from go.outdoors. doubles as a bin during the day. Revolutionized camping lol.

HoosierDaddy · 10/08/2018 08:24

I love camping, but like others we have built up a stock of gear over a decade. Our first trip was a tiny 2-person tent. Now we have a walk in 4-person job, with loads of room. My main "needs" are my own single airbed, DH has his beside me, a shared double used to wake both of us if the other moved. Duvet and pillow. My own toilet - this was my deal breaker. After one particularly grim trip there was crying with awful toilets, DH bought me my own as a present.

The tent is so big these days, I have an ensuite 😂
