Have I been an eBay CF?

I ordered an item 3 weeks ago, and accidentally set my address as my previous home. I messaged the seller asking them to send the item to my current address and they said it was no problem and they’d do just that. The item did not arrive, so I followed the conflict resolution process and the seller did not reply to any of my messages. The week given to the seller to resolve the issue and deliver the item passed, and eBay gave me a refund.
I assume they accidentally sent the item to the original address, and didn’t reply to my messages in the hope I would let I drop. Was I cheeky getting my refund?

it's possible they used Ebay to print the postage & forgot that YOU had put the wrong address in. Once the item was sent they were stuffed, couldn't do anything to get it back.

Kpo58 · 09/08/2018 17:43

I don't think that you were cheeky in getting the refund. The seller didn't respond to you, showing proof of postage to either your old or new address, so you don't know if they posted the item in the first place.

Victoria889 · 09/08/2018 17:46

Not cheeky they said no problem when you sent your new address, it's their fault

Sammyham88 · 09/08/2018 17:47

Easy mistake to make, you informed the seller about the change of address and they replied stating it was no problem so even if they have sent it to your old address that's on them, plus they've had plenty of time to reply to the conflict resolution process and haven't so what else can you do? Definitely not being cheeky to get your refund.

Would the seller have seller protection if they send to any address that is not the paypal address?

InspectorIkmen · 09/08/2018 17:55

Bit of a sick move actually OP. The seller is obliged to send to the address you have registered with PayPal - they did that. Totally your fault that you didn’t get it.
Maybe one day you’ll sell on eBay and get a dizzy buyer like yourself

AlmostAJillSandwich · 09/08/2018 18:02

Seller would forefit their protection to send to any address other than the one you used when ordering/paying. What they should have done is cancel sale with the option of problem with buyers address, and then you re buy using the correct address.
Hopefully they just didn't post it, but they will now have a defect which is kind of unfair as it was your mistake.
If they've posted it to wrong address because they posted before you let them know, yes, cheeky and unfair.
If the item does turn up then i hope you do the honest thing and re pay.

The address I’m at now is my billing and PayPal address? The original eBay one was my old student address and I did change it and contact the seller immediately after the auction ended

It’s not OP’s fault if the seller knew the address was wrong and posted to it anyway.

OP you weren’t wrong to get the refund - the seller should have engaged with you to resolve the issue and they didn’t. Not your fault!

lljkk · 09/08/2018 19:05

I wouldn't be chuffed if OP was my buyer, but this is not worth feeling guilty about. Life is too short. Lack of comms from seller could mean they went on holiday, or just generally incompetent or other weird reason. Some people genuinely never read emails (I don't know how, either). You'll never know. Move on.

Maelstrop · 09/08/2018 19:10

Given the OP immediately contacted the seller with the correct address, she is right to have sought and been given a refund.

TheDogAteMyPants · 09/08/2018 19:19

The seller should have refused to send to the alternative address as neither of you are covered if the parcel goes missing as here. You shouldn’t have asked her to do that. That would make me think you were a scammer, I’m afraid and if I was the seller I’d report you to eBay for that (bearing in mind eBay is faceless).

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 09/08/2018 19:36

Sellers should not send to any other address than the registered eBay or Paypal address.
Although when printing labels it prints as the registered eBay address so this is probably what's happened. You can change addresses easily.
I sometimes get messages to post to a different address and I do if the item value is low and it wouldn't be posted tracked anyway.
This isn't his fault really.

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 09/08/2018 19:39

Buyer probably doesn't think you're a CF but a scammer - it's a classic scam move getting a seller to send to a different address and then claiming it didn't arrive.

If you wanted it sent to a different address seller should have cancelled original transaction and set up a new listing so you could re-buy it with the correct address in your account.

The way you've engineered it the seller won't be protected. It's their fault they agreed and I'm sure they won't be doing that again in a hurry.
