I am currently recruiting for two high profile posts in our company. I've had some great CVs and applications through, but if candidates think we won't google people and check social media they are a bit naive, and unfortunately it can really change the impression a potential employer is left with. So if you are looking for jobs, take a moment to go through what your FB page looks like from an outsider, your twitter, etc and do google your name!! Just come across one which, well, just wow!!

@fruitbatdancer why would the lap dancer need to declare that job to you? I think you’ve been quite unfair and discrimatory to her

LemonysSnicket · 09/08/2018 19:14

A YouTuber and an illustrator beat me out of my 1st google page which is really sad because my job requires a public profile ... suck a common name.

Fruitbatdancer · 09/08/2018 19:20

@glintandglide it’s a financial services organisation and requires full disclosure of previous employment (and credit checks but that aside...) So the job itself wasn’t an issue, the non disclosure was. The HR checks are outaragously costly and so you really don’t want to pay for them and have people fail.

Oddcat · 09/08/2018 19:24

Omg ! I've just googled my name and I appear in a casting website , with my picture on it !! I didn't add myself to this website , I've never had any intention to be an actress . Wtf ?

Hamandcheesebaguette · 09/08/2018 19:29

I think some of these views are a bit harsh. I work in HR and my Facebook profile picture is me drinking a cocktail out of a bucket... does that mean I am rubbish at my job, unprofessional etc.? No it does not. Just had a glowing recommendation from the executive of the board in fact. And that you could get a bucket of sex on the beach for £7 in Edinburgh and I had a fabulous evening out. And I look great with a filter on

Would I change it if I was job hunting? Probably. But I would begrudge doing so. Yes. Are people not allowed personal lives? The racist, violent imagery then yes fair enough but enjoying a night out?

I recruit as part of my role as well and wouldn't exclude somebody who was shock drinking alcohol in their profile picture on their personal social media channels

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 09/08/2018 19:29

I've interviewed a lot of people in my job and I have never ever Googled them or checked their social media. Are you saying that you wouldn't interview someone based on their FB page posts if they were, on paper, the best candidate for the job?

Deadringer · 09/08/2018 19:33

Pheonix Mercury, Janni did we ever play together?

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 09/08/2018 19:33

Wow! Just typed in my name and found a picture of my 10 year old daughter from a few years ago!

glintandglide · 09/08/2018 19:39

Fair enough fruitbatdancer, didn’t realise your position required full history. Feel a bit sorry for her though, she probably thought she was in with a chance of a brilliant job and thought you’d judge her for the stripping

Bluesheep8 · 09/08/2018 19:53

I've never been on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. This was commented on by an employer once, a long time ago. My employer wanted me to be on all 3. I refused. Interesting thread as no employer would ever be able to research me at all....

Mehaveit · 09/08/2018 19:53

My charity work (I don't like to talk about it Grin Wink) I object to a lot of local planning decisions (not nimby NDN stuff, strategic planning stuff) and my LinkedIn profile. I can live with that.

MarshaBradyo · 09/08/2018 19:57

No FB, Twitter or LinkedIn here

So, so glad I can still get work if I want without these - especially LinkedIn

Although it seems to be out of favour these days anyway, people don’t carry about it as much tg

CatchingBabies · 09/08/2018 20:05

Just googled my name and there is someone with the exact same name as me that lives around 15 mins away from where I do, although she is a model and I am certainly not, how could any employer be sure they had the right person?

Auntpetunia2015 · 09/08/2018 20:12

My full name brings up an actress and a dead author! The expected short version of my name brings up 100s of people none of whom are me. The name I use brings up my locked fb, and Instagram but nothing to see on either of them. I sort of feel like I don’t exist ..

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 09/08/2018 20:20

I'm the only person with my name and I'm all over google as I enter competitions, so my name comes up in winners lists, plus I'm a bit of a fangirl so my name often appears in comments etc and a video I posted recently on twitter was retweeted or liked nearly 100k times so that's appearing in lots of results and articles relating to it. And I have a craft hobby which I post pictures of and am pinned and credited on pinterest a lot. There's nothing I would be embarrassed about a potential employer seeing though, it just shows I have lots of different interests and actively engage online in a creative way.

CrohnicallyEarly · 09/08/2018 20:20

I hired a hitman to kill my husband because I was in love with another man.

Hopefully potential recruiters will be scared enough to just give me the job, in case they're next! 😂

VeniVidiWeeWee · 09/08/2018 20:27

You might want to reconsider Googling applicants:

TatianaLarina · 09/08/2018 20:31

From the FT article:

The opinion of the working party is non-binding.

Tangarine · 09/08/2018 20:34

I was once in an interview panel. The candidate walked in, shook hands with each of us and said “so you’re Mr B who used to work at B place, you’re Mrs C who used to live in D country and you’re Ms E who has been fundraising for F charity”.

HaveSomeGrace · 09/08/2018 20:37

@Tangarine

What did you all make of that situation?

TatianaLarina · 09/08/2018 20:37

Did he get the job?

VeniVidiWeeWee · 09/08/2018 20:39

"Tatiana"

"But very persuasive due to who they are".

TatianaLarina · 09/08/2018 20:41

Persuasive and legally binding is not the same thing.

AnotherOriginalUsername · 09/08/2018 20:41

Apparently I'm Miss New York Hmm

VeniVidiWeeWee · 09/08/2018 20:47

Tatiana

I fully agree. We'll only know when a case goes through the courts. Up to the individual if they want to take the risk.
