Syrian conflict - so what's it REALLY all about?

Came across an article today about the 'brutal dictator' Assad's wife having breast cancer and expected the comments section to reflect my initial opinion of not really giving a shit after what he's done to his own people over there while she's been at his side.

That was in my limited knowledge of the conflict gained from MSM.

I was very surprised that the majority of comments were to the opposite and also of the view of Assad by many.

I was then led to an article stating that no evidence of nerve agents being used was found after the attack on civilians earlier this year that has been attributed to Assad.

Apparently the conflict all started after Assad refused to let the US run a gas pipeline through Syria from Saudi Arabia, this precipitated the 'Arab Spring' in an attempt to destabilise the region. The revolutionaries were trained and are funded by the US and Saudi with the promise of an Islamic state when they have overthrown Assad, which would result in a return to a mediaeval age with more slaughter if ISIS is any example. On that basis I suppose Assad cannot just give in.

I don't doubt that Assad is a dictator but there was relative peace and good living standards for his citizens under his regime?

Assad apparently has a lot of support from ordinary citizens who benefited from a secular society with a good standards in the economic, educational and healthcare sectors and equality to women?

He trained as an eye surgeon and never expected to become President. How odd he turned into such a monster?

The US had admitted to killing more civilians themselves in bomb strikes than the amount of people killed in the supposed 'chemical weapons' attack.

Interested in views of which side of the propaganda is true?

Fucking horrifying to think this been orchestrated and the acceptance of MSM reports being 'facts'.

Why is it gullible to believe MSM but not gullible to reject all MSM after reading just one contradictory article?

If you haven't read about Syria much in the past then you will find it difficult to choose between such starkly opposing viewpoints: you can't place either in context. Keep reading widely and see what you think.

Was the article in question from RT? I imagine Russian state-operated outlets would very much want people to believe their allies didn't commit war crimes
