Should I go back to doctor? Or ride it out

Evening all

I have a lovely 3 year old little boy. Since Saturday he’s been suffering with loose poo and diaorrhea.

It started out of the blue Saturday morning, he suddenly has a cramp and has to run to his potty whereby he’ll do a loose stool and then feel better. However he’s doing about 5 a day and it shows no sign of improving.

I took him to the doctors on Monday who said it’ll clear up and usually takes around 5 days to go. Heading into our 6th day and bless him the same thing is still happening. He keeps having to run to the potty.

He’s not otherwise ill, eating well and happy in himself and no temperature at all.

Do I wait and see? Go back to the doctors? Has anyone had any experience of this?

Thank you!

Can you phone your doctor for advice, rather than taking your DS into the surgery?

Imknackeredzzz · 09/08/2018 00:16

I did mean to say actually that I did phone in advance before I took him last time and they said best to bring him in!

Poor little boy. Does he have the diarrhoea after eating anything in particular?

Imknackeredzzz · 09/08/2018 00:34

Hi lynne
No he doesn’t, his diet hasn’t changed at all,
Seems to be constant regardless of what he eats. Poor little thing, it’s like everything is just running through him

Been through this with my own son, it'll pass eventually, it always takes longer than the doctor suggests. If it's a virus there's nothing you can do really, and it's so hard and cruel to withhold food when they're little I wouldn't suggest a fasting period. He'll eat and then he'll poop and it'll go that way until it's over I'm afraid. Get some dioralyte for him to drink so he doesn't dehydrate, and try a probiotic for his tummy, try yakult it won't hurt, it'll help balance gut bacteria.
Hope you're little boy feels better soon, best of luck xx

And if those cramps feel worse, or he becomes lethargic, pale, bloated belly, get back to the doctor.

Thank you, I’ll see how is he today - he’s just had another cramp and run to the loo

Of course you should go back.

Take a poo sample with you so they can test it for various bugs, some of which will need medication to treat.

Good luck

Sorry if I’m being stupid but how do you take a poo sample?

It’s not fun!
First find a very clean pot with a well sealed lid. Jam jar, mini food pot etc. Clean well and use boiling water to clean if possible. Or if you live close to the GP surgery just pop in and ask the receptionist for a poo sample pot.

Wait til there’s a poo in the potty (don’t worry if there’s a bit of wee too). Scoop up poo into pot (disposable plastic spoon useful). Try to get 2-4 teaspoons full.

Good luck!!

Or use this nhs advice!

We all went through the norovirus in 24 hours but it took my DD 11 days to get over it. She’d have 48 hours of vomit/diarrhea, then recover for 24 hours and start again. The doctor was just about to carry out tests when she got over it by herself.

Sometimes these things take a bit longer.
