To expect better from a trainee beautician?

I get semi perm eyelashes done a few times a year at a local reputable salon. It normally costs around £60.

They had an offer for a new lady to do them for £20. I assumed (but was never told) she was training/newly qualified and I wasn't expecting the same standard.

The problem is that the next day the fake lashes started dropping off a lot. I also lost some of my real lashes but given how many lashes I was loosing overall I don't know if it's the normal amount.

Less than a week later and it looks like I've had my semi perms on for a few weeks. I emailed the salon and they've replied effectively saying I paid £20 and she was inexperienced so what did I expect.

My question is, should I just suck it up? I paid £20 for lashes that didn't even last a few days. The pic is of the "better" eye.

I don't think you can accept a cheaper service from a trainee without understanding that they are training and might make errors. If they were able to guarantee a standard, they would be charging full price.

£40 difference is a lot so I think yes you need to just suck it up & not accept a trainee offer again.

Hmm, 1/3 of the usual price.....
You know what they say about paying peanuts.....
Personally I wouldn’t let someone with minimal experience use glue of any sort around my eyelids....that’s what their little skint 18 year old friends are for.
If I went for to get my hair done and my hairdresser asked if I’d mind someone else doing it for 1/3 of the normal price I’d be like ‘absolutely no chance’......

You have to suck it up I’m afraid. It’s the same as buying £60 trainers for £20 because they are used and worn fairly well. What did you expect really?

PumpkinPie2016 · 08/08/2018 21:36

I'm a bit on the fence here. If you knew that were a trainee then yes, you would expect the standard to be lower and therefore would probably have to suck it up. That being said, their work should be being checked by an experienced beautician so it would concern me that it clearly wasn't.

However, your post suggests it wasn't made clear that she was a trainee - the price was lower but some salons do that if a new person starts, even if they are experienced, to allow them to build up a client base. You really should have been told that she was a trainee and I would certainly raise that with them.

Can the lashes be removed so that you can have them re-done?

I regularly use a training academy for hair and beauty. I accept it may take a little longer but there is always a manager there to check things along the way. Who checked the girl's work? Did anyone check you were satisfied as you left?

keepingbees · 08/08/2018 21:48

No one who isn't qualified should be doing treatments in a salon. Even if she was newly qualified her treatments should be up to a reasonable standard.
I would go and have a chat with the salon. It's still £20 if your money, and also they should be made aware of the standard of her work.

Oblomov18 · 09/08/2018 08:32

Why wasn't anyone checking her work before you left the salon?

hannah1992 · 09/08/2018 08:36

I was about to say did nobody check it?

I’m a qualified hairdresser but when I had passed level 2 the salon I worked in still double checked clients until I was level 3 qualified. This was for things like cutting and colouring and perming.

If she is newly qualified or training and they’re not confident in clients paying full price then her work should have been checked
