I have rang triage before anyone asks. Can't get in touch with my midwife and left a message with triage but to call back but.....

36 weeks tomorrow and I've pulled a muscle/trapped a nerve in my side/back. I'm in agony.

Does anyone know what I can take pain killer wise paracetamol is not cutting it at all.

I've had it for a week now and midwife said there's nothing I can do when I saw her on Monday.

It was getting slightly better but this afternoon I've had a coughing fit and felt something sort of crack. Been in agony ever since.

Is it worth getting checked over? I'm sure it's just a pulled muscle but it's not getting any better.

Hot water bottle helps but not massively. Baths are good but it really hurts when I need to climb out

Update - second gp said pretty much the same as the first. Only take codiene if I really need too. He said 1 tablet before bed to help me get comfortable and sleep should be fine. He said if anything, it could make baby sleepy. However I should avoid it unless I really need too etc.

Took some more paracetamol last night and dh went and got me some deep heat which did nothing. Hot water bottle helped me drift off to sleep.

Woke up at 3am and literally couldn't move due to pain. That's when I knew I needed to take the codiene. I was in so much pain. I then managed a bath and drifted off back to sleep after that with an ice pack this time.

This morning....I'm in agony and having a good cry but that's obviously hurting me. I'm starting to wonder if I've actually broken a rib. I did feel something crack when I coughed yesterday.

Anyone feel I should try a trip to A&E? I can't get there at the min. Dh is working miles away and my mum is also not in my home town until this afternoon and there's no way I could drive.

I'm not ringing my gp again, I could try 111 and see what they say. I just know there's nothing they can do for a broken rib anyway apart from rest which is what I'm doing.

Sorry just so tired and emotional this morning. X

I don’t think this is something for A&E as they will say the same as the GP. People don’t like giving medication to pregnant women.
It might be worth speaking to your midwife to see if they can get you an appointment with a consultant who speacalises in pregnancy and pain (it’s who I had to see to get the go ahead for painkillers) as they might be able to help more.

You really do have my sympathies. Pregnant and being in pain is no fun

@Hidillyho thank you, this is what I thought too. I rang my maternity unit yesterday who said I'd be best speaking to a gp, I'm just getting passed around basically.

I'm going to try have another sleep and see how I feel when I wake up, thank you

The only pain relief not safe in pregnancy are NSAID medications. Opiates paracetamol and tens are all fine.

You wouldn't be remiss to go to a&e if in severe pain. They have access to pain doctors and can tell you if you can have pethedine or diazepam to help out. (I was jabbed with pethedine the other night due to severe pain and I'm about ready to pop. It's clinically safe in pregnancy)

Poor you! I broke my ankle badly in 3 places, and dislocated it, needing two operations while I was pregnant. All I was allowed was co-codamol and paracetamol. Didn't touch the sides 😭
