I'm new to MN And darent post anything until now. I was just wondering, when people post, would it be more easy to gauge people's opinions if they stated where they were from? I've read lots of "where I'm from" "where I live" when opinions are being added. I suppose what I really mean is, different countries and areas have different opinions on right and wrong. Oh and tbh when I see the "c" swear word, I cringe, is this word really allowed?

Yes you can say "cunt". I just did.

I disagree with you about geographical locations determining whether a poster would think something was right or wrong, pretty bizarre reasoning you've got there.

jonnyloveslisa · 08/08/2018 15:13

Why wouldn't it be allowed? I cringe at all sorts of mumsnet phrases, but it doesn't mean they should be banned. Unless they are explicitly discriminating or spouting hate speech, you can't go around policing people's language.

Anyway, I don't really think it would help if everyone said where they were from. Seeing as it's an anonymous internet forum, you can't say that the advice is right or wrong. It's just advice and opinions that you can either accept or reject.

whathappenedtherethen · 08/08/2018 15:13

Sorry I think I worded it wrong but couldn't think of the right way to put it. I was reading one about a bbq and food etc and there were different right and wrongs ie do we take food, I would never take food, of course you take food. I was just wondering if different countries have different ways so to get a balance on the opinions (not on all posts of course) that it could be quite helpful. I didn't mean to offend.

I used to find the word cunt offensive because people told me that I should find it offensive. After a bit of exposure therapy (hanging out with a friend who used it in every other sentence) I find I quite like it. I know it's supposed to be misogynistic but I don't see it in the same way as words like "whore" and "bitch", which are directly misogynistic and offensive, whereas "cunt" is more on a par with "cock". Obviously there is no right and wrong here and people are allowed to dislike the word, but I'm just curious about why "cunt" in particular is so reviled.

Trinity66 · 08/08/2018 15:20

I do usually say what country I'm from if I say some thing like where I'm from this is normal etc. I don't love the word cunt but this is an adult site and sometimes it fits

Trinity66 · 08/08/2018 15:21

"Naice" wtaf? that should be banned :p

nonevernotever · 08/08/2018 15:23

I know what you mean OP but I don't think it would help, partly because many of the variations aren't actually particularly regional. I also won't use the C word (and find it ridiculous that I can't even bring myself to type it) but if others want to that's up to them.

LeighaJ · 08/08/2018 15:24

I often state I'm from the US so people are aware my opinions and interpretations of some things might differ because of that. It's not relevant in all situations ofc.

And "where I'm from" (the southern US specifically) throwing the "C" word around is treated like a criminal offence. 😂

whathappenedtherethen · 08/08/2018 15:24

Rudewordsaretheshit I suppose I don't like it because of the reason you stated. It's not a nice word to hear. Don't get me wrong I do swear but just don't use that word. I suppose it depends where you're from?!? 😊

OP posts:
ScreamingValenta · 08/08/2018 15:25

It depends on the context of the thread. If it's a legal matter, for instance, location is v. important. I agree if it's a point of etiquette location is usually relevant as customs may vary, though some instances of rudeness transcend all boundaries!

longwayoff · 08/08/2018 15:27

People post extremely personal information sometimes at a time in their life when they're very stressed. Knowing someone's location would make it much easier to maybe identify a contributor. So, not a good idea.

whathappenedtherethen · 08/08/2018 15:29

Longwayoff. Yes I appreciate that. I did say not on all posts, just some.

OP posts:
BackforGood · 08/08/2018 16:13

Yes, but - depending on what the thread is about - most things depend on circumstance.

Your age / if you drive / your sex / your wealth or poverty / not just your Country, but the region of the Country, and, tbh, which particular part of a particular town sometimes / your 'class' (dirty word on MN, I know) Wink / if you are in a long term relationship / if you have dc / and so on.

Unless you fill out a complete CV before each post, all of these things affect who you are / what you think.
You can only expect people to mention something if it is particularly relevant to the thing being discussed.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 08/08/2018 16:19

Why is it, that whenever someone on here says, "the c word makes me feel uncomfortable" I want to sing, "cunt cunt cunt cunt cunt cunt cunt cunt cunt cunt cunt cunt cunty cunty cunt cunt"? I never say it in real life.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/08/2018 16:21

You confuse me OP Grin

harriethoyle · 08/08/2018 16:23

@PerfectlySymmetrical I was literally just reading this thread thinking "cunt cunt cunt cunt cunt" 🤣🤣🤣

SalemBlackCat · 08/08/2018 16:24

It is tricky. Sometimes even if you state what country you are from, and state a truth from that country ie health care in country A vs health care in country Z, you get abused and accused of lying, and mocked. It hurts sometimes when people can't understand where you're coming from and no quarter is given from that. I too feel the same about the c word. I find the moderating tbh very restrictive, but have always been shocked that the c word is allowed in full, the 'f.gg.t' word/f.g word is allowed, along with other swear words. So it kind of is the opposite to most boards in that words that are filtered out/not allowed to be typed in full are. It's a bit of a culture shock, but there are some good people on here and many topics can make you really think. I have learned quite a bit from this site, mostly good.

longwayoff · 08/08/2018 16:34

Cunt is a good English word that became unacceptable in victorian era. Grope Cunt alley in the city of London is still there albeit renamed to save our modern blushes. Let's reclaim it.

longwayoff · 08/08/2018 16:36

Ha! Reclaim the word not the street. might be a bit much.

Willow2017 · 08/08/2018 16:46

I never used the word cunt until I came on here many moons ago. Its taken a while but I do find it creeping into my vocab when I am particularly stressed or angry (in private) COD Death Match bots I am looking at you right now
And I have learned some amazing new swear words too Grin

I dont care what words people use as long as they are not goady/trolls or just being vile for the 'fun' of it.

I hate other forums where we are treated like kids and no swearing is allowed. I mean people swear in RL why not on a forum for adults? I am sure we can all cope with a bit of swearing. And sometimes its just needed, some things people post are just so beyond other words you have to reply with swearing!

longwayoff · 08/08/2018 18:02

Willow, is my curse of choice, in private, too. I wouldnt use it when with other people as so many people find it breathtakingly offensive and I dont like to make people uncomfortable. But is my go to word for relieving irritation at home.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 08/08/2018 20:56

I'm glad it's not just me harriet! 😂
