To think 7lb 12 is not “a big baby”?

I’ve just found out I’ve been booked for a GTT test. This was out of the blue and no one had told me about this. Rang the hospital and was told it was because of “previous big baby”. My son was 7lb 12...

I have no history of GD (I had the test last time because of extra water), I have a BMI of 20.7, I’ve gained no weight so far and have no reason to think I’d have it.

I also hate blood tests and have HG so I’ll probably end up being sick.

Is it just me or is this a really strange reason to refer someone?

I’d question that I think. Or just cancel it.

steff13 · 08/08/2018 13:32

My smallest baby was 7 lb 15. The others were 9 lb 8 and 8 lb 6.

So I wouldn't consider it big, no.

I have no history of GD (I had the test last time because of extra water)

What does this mean? Is a glucose test not standard there? Here you have one with every pregnancy.

thirstyformore · 08/08/2018 13:33

It sounds like you’re quite slim. Is it because 7.12 is a big baby for you? I’m much bigger than you and was overweight when I had my second child. Had the diabetes test (which was rank) but came back fine. He was born over 10lbs.

So no, 7.12 is not a big baby in my book!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/08/2018 13:34

Sounds odd. Could it be just because you had one last time?

MrSpock · 08/08/2018 13:36

No it’s not standard here, they do it for risk factors which are ethnicity, BMI, sugar in urine, and extra waters on scan. I had one scan which showed slightly excess waters and that’s why I had it before.

They said my growth chart said 7lb 12 was large for my build but I was 8lb 2oz at birth and I’m 5”7, albeit quite skinny, so surely I wouldn’t have tiny babies either way.

I just googled and the average is 7lb 8 so my DS was almost exactly average sized! I’m confused why I need this.

sailorcherries · 08/08/2018 13:36

DS1 was 10lbs 8oz and, as a result I was a higher risk pregnancy and had various growth scans and blood tests.
DS2 was 8lbs 4oz and I thought he was tiny! (In comparison, he was still the chunkiest on my ward).

7lbs 12oz would be miniscule to me.

MrSpock · 08/08/2018 13:36

One scan last time with excess waters, not this time.

I had to have the test due to my age. They make everyone over 35 have it in my area. Could that be why? I wouldn’t say 7 lb 12 is large (3.5kg is average I think which is about 7lb 4).

FatCow2018 · 08/08/2018 13:39

9lb 11, 10lb and 10lb 3 here, so to me that is tiny!!!

MrSpock · 08/08/2018 13:39

I’m 24 so I doubt it. White, no diabetic parents, no history of diabetes.

I don’t mind as such but I really hate bloods and I’m worried not eating and then drinking lucozade will set off my sickness again!

OP posts:
Suresurelah · 08/08/2018 13:39

I would just do the test.....

I did it and had GD. However, when DD was born she only weighed 6lb 2oz, so she was actually a tiny thing.

MrSpock · 08/08/2018 13:40

Did you have any symptoms of diabetes?

OP posts:
Mousefunky · 08/08/2018 13:42

No, a medically large baby is anything over ten pounds, I have had two that size. 7 lbs 12 would be like a having a large shit to me in comparison Grin.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 08/08/2018 13:43

Both mine were over that so I wouldn't class it as big no. I'm tall but average weight.

jayho · 08/08/2018 13:46

Ask your me for urine test strips to check for raised glucose. I wouldn't do the test if you don't need it. My three were all over 10 lbs and only had test with first

Ozgirl75 · 08/08/2018 13:46

I can’t believe you don’t get the test as standard where you are! I am small, slim, white with no family history of diabetes and yet I was on insulin three times a day as my GD was so bad I couldn’t eat anything with out my sugars rocketing.

I know personally of two other people with no risk factors who have had GD, picked up in the standard test.

upsideup · 08/08/2018 13:46

All my kids have been 5lb something so a nearly 8lb would be massive for me. 7lb 12 is probably just considered a big baby for your size.

Saffy60 · 08/08/2018 13:46

Hmmm, they may have made a mix up. Has happened. I went in for a minor op last year and have a fairly unusual first name, they had someone elses notes... same name, it was bit nerve racking for a while, I had trouble to keep calm...different blood group!

Check - check check!!!!

Ozgirl75 · 08/08/2018 13:47

Also, I didn’t have a single symptom, even when my sugars were hitting 15.

MrSpock · 08/08/2018 13:49

Did it show up in your urine?
I have loads of urine sticks and can test my urine sugars whenever

KnickersOnTheLine · 08/08/2018 13:50

This won’t be much help but the drink they give won’t be lucozade now they’ve removed all the sugar. I never had the test with any of my pregnancies because I didn’t fall into any off the risk categories. Then again these things change from year to year and within different regions so could all be different now. But to answer your original question, a baby under 8lb is definitely not large

MrSpock · 08/08/2018 13:53

I found the drink horrendous last time. I was nearly sick so many times.

Obviously I don’t want to put my babies at risk and will do this if I have to, but it seems a really odd reason to test!

OP posts:
Bowlofbabelfish · 08/08/2018 13:56

I’d have the test. They look at your size as well as the baby’s size to determine what big is so big for someone very petite means something different to big for someone taller and built like an amazon.

That plus extra waters has probably triggered it. It’s not much fun taking it but the consequences of untreated GD are severe. You don’t always get spillover into urine either. Neither do you have to be larger to get GD - the mechanisms are not the same as type II diabetes.

FWIW the only person in our family with diabetes has a BMI of around 19-20 and had no symptoms - a similar test done randomly picked it up.

balalalala · 08/08/2018 13:56

I'm almost exactly the same as you although luckily not suffering from HG. I've been told I have to have it this time round due to maternal grandmother diabetes, however that didn't require me to have it two years ago!

WhatWouldCoachBombayDo · 08/08/2018 13:57

I'm 5ft2 and am a medium build and DS was 7lb10! No issues were raised at all, I was never tested for GD.

I've just discovered I'm pregnant again and have this sinking feeling baby will be bigger 🙈
