To not to have expected these furry visitors (light hearted)

So we recently had bi-fold doors fitted and as you might expect with the heat they have been open almost constantly when we are at home and awake.

So last week I found a random cat staring intently at our hamster one evening, poor Hammie was frozen to the spot in her cage in the dining room (not room with patio doors so cat had been through the house while Dd and I were in it - CF)

Then this morning I was in the house on my own, having a wee in the downstairs toilet (sorry tmi) with the door open when a mouse starts to stroll out of the spare bedroom (downstairs and next to loo) a cute little thing which scarpered sharpish back in to the bedroom. I have barricaded it in and bought a humane trap with chocolate brownie.

Why did I not realise these doors would bring me closer to nature and have you any stories that will make me feel better about these critters Smile

I was once watching TV in my living room (with the back door open) when a ferret strolled in, looked round, peed on some lego that DS had left our on the floor and strolled out again. None of my neighbours kept ferrets.Never saw it again either!

Dadsbigsausages · 08/08/2018 11:50

I was sat in living room once, intently reading magazines. Sort of saw one of my two cats walking past to go upstairs. Then went into kitchen and saw both cats under kitchen table.

Some random cat had gone upstairs and had kittens on my bed 😂

She only lived a few doors away so everyone was gently returned home and we haven't seen her since. Declined offer of a kitten-very difficult!

Ratonastick · 08/08/2018 11:52

Yep, I have a visitor cat. Stops by around 10pm, strolls in for a nose around and a chat, sometimes an occasional cuddle then sods off. I accidentally shut him in a few weeks ago as I went to bed without knowing he was here. He came up to bed with me, had a cuddle and a few hours snooze with me then exited via the window. Cool as a cucumber.

RatherBeRiding · 08/08/2018 11:52

Re: mouse - if it has a white underbelly it will be a field mouse that has accidentally strayed inside so you can happily release it into your garden and it shouldn't bother you again. If it is a uniform brown, it is a house mouse.

Powerless · 08/08/2018 12:52

Op that was a funny story!

Nothisispatrick · 08/08/2018 13:13

Ha I love cats! They really are the cheekiest of fuckers.

Puddelchen · 08/08/2018 13:29

Years ago my mum was sitting all alone in her flat with all doors closed when a hamster strolled across her carpet. It had come from the flat above but how it got down to the flat below was anyone’s guess!

Mumsnut · 08/08/2018 13:53

DH was nuzzling my ear and indulging in some heavy breathing in the early hours of this morning. I wasn't impressed at 5am.

It was however next door's cat.

LemonysSnicket · 08/08/2018 14:19

My sister and I were about to get in a taxi for a night out when a cat walked down our stairs... we have never owned a cat.

HMBB · 08/08/2018 17:01

I am loving these CF cat stories. I want to get a cat even more now (once hamster has popped her cloggs - she's 2 on Friday).

Ferrets and hamsters too - brilliant! I think I could handle the hamster but would probably have freaked at a ferret!

Yambabe are you from the Black Country?

I didn't see any white so probably a house mouse - eek!

I feel much better now though thank you and hope to find a cute little rodent all safe and full of brownie when I get home, all happy in the trap and ready to be re-homed. Wish me luck!

I've got a cat, and a while back, another cat used to come into my house whenever the door was open, then play with my cat's toys and steal one before running off with it! It happened a few times. My cat sat there and took no notice at all.

MsHomeSlice · 08/08/2018 17:06

if it is a house mouse it's really not kind to relocate them, they have an internal map and once they are relocated they have no idea where to hide, or where to find food and will stress themselves to death. That is if the stress from being trapped/handled and relocated doesn't see them off first.

plus they really are vermin, full of germs and not to be encouraged with trips and days out , so snap traps are the best solution.

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 08/08/2018 17:06

We used to have a big ginger tomcat when I was a kid, I say he was ours because we did technically own him... however, he gave himself access to 3 or 4 houses in the street, and would sleep on their beds and be fed there 🙈

The neighbour would often shout me to come and retrieve small dead offerings he’d leave on her floor 😂

HMBB · 08/08/2018 18:34

Oh no MsHomeSlice I thought I was being kind! Sh1t.

I have more empathy for mice since we live our hamster so much.

It wasn't in the trap when I got home so I have made a mouse run with boxes straight out to the doors in an effort to encourage it out that way rather than into any other rooms. I have been sitting here on the stairs staring at the open bedroom door since 6pm. Bored now and wondering about going to jump in the bed to make it run if it is in there?!

Something pale walked across my living room floor, and looking at it out of the corner of my eye I thought it was our cat; it was a cream ferret! My dogs were fascinated, so I scooped It up in a zip-top shopping bag, and my husband dumped it in the field at the end of our road. No idea where it came from.

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 08/08/2018 23:09

Nice. Where it probably died 😕 Could you not have tried to find the owner or dropped it off to a rescue place?

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 08/08/2018 23:30

Yep snap traps for house mice (you rarely have one) before they multiply or memorise your house in time for winter for the rest of its friends. They chew through wires and cause destruction. I speak from bitter experience

Nousernameforme · 08/08/2018 23:45

We have a time share in a bunny. He told into our garden every hour or so and nibbles a few dandelion leaves then buggers off again. It's someone's pet but he goes round all.the gardens. People have put signs up but still the bunny comes visiting

MissContrary · 08/08/2018 23:48

The neighbours cat often eyes up the front door and has tried to come in a few times. I gave my 10yo ds the key one day to go in ahead of me. I walked in to my son looking between the bottom of the stairs and me, shrugging his shoulders. I go to see what he's looking at and cf cat has clearly taken advantage of ds unlocking the door and is sat on the bottom stair. It soon scarpered once it saw me. It also runs up to my car miowing lovingly when I pull up and waits next to my door purring away. Then blatantly ignores me and goes to hide in the shade under my car as soon as I attempt to fuss him. He only loves me for my car Grin

Tara336 · 08/08/2018 23:53

@Nousernameforme maybe the bunny can’t read 😂

DropZoneOne · 08/08/2018 23:58

Our old neighbours cat was pure CF. I was off work with DD when she was younger, and the cat would frequently come in the back door and sleep under the dining table or at the top of the stairs. Once I found him on the sofa bed in the spare room and one day he gave me such a fright when I sat down at the desk, stretched my bare legs out and my feet touched something warm and furry!

It was a sad day when he died, he really was quite a character.

SlightAggrandising · 09/08/2018 00:00

A month or so after my Dbro left home to join the army, my parents found a cat in his room. We've not had a cat since about 1986 and they're about a mile from the next nearest house ¯\(ツ)/¯

Springersrock · 09/08/2018 00:05

I dozed off on the sofa a few weeks ago and woke up to something warm snuggled into the back of my legs. It was a cat - just not mine.

I also come downstairs in the middle of the night once and found 2 cats eating the dog’s food - neither were my cats

Karmaisabish · 09/08/2018 00:11

I was upstairs on the loo when DP shouted "there's a dog in the house!'

We had left the front door open (And the front gate apparently) and this big bouncy white mastiff ran in. He ran upstairs, I baracaded myself in the bathroom until DP confirmed he was not a face eating savage and we took him to find his owner who didnt give a shit and has form for letting bouncy dog run wild
