to ask a boring house keeping question?

I'm shamelessly posting for traffic!

We're renovating a shithole and although it is now infinitely better than it was when we exchanged I'm still haunted my the scent of excrement and urine. It doesn't smell anymore but I want to give the house a scent of its own.

Are there any natural/non-chemical air fresheners that won't leave us all with migraines available to buy?

Look on amphora aromatics online they have a really big list of oils and pick your fav smells. You can go for whatever you like best!!!

Bergamot is very good for coverage and is earl grey tea smell.

If you like flowers neroli and rose.

I use this company in my business.

I used to have some lovely Crabtree and Evelyn sprays that were foody - they were bloody gorgeous! One was vanilla biscuits, one was cucumber, one was bread. They were amazing. I don't know whether they still do them, but they made my house smell wonderful.

Cant do air fresheners in my house, too many asthmatics. I have a muslin cloth that i put in each wash then dry on a little hot water pipe that you can't see, my house always smells of clean washing, lots of people comment on it and ask what candle etc it is!

I get where the op is coming from though. When we bought this house we didn't realise it smelled bad on viewing. It's a really old listed building and when the previous owners moved out, we realised due to them not having done anything for years, and it being now empty of their belongings, it smelled. It smelled old and musty and hit you as soon as you came in.

I was paranoid about it for a good while, ultimately everything was sanded back or sandblasted, painted and the thirty odd year old dirty wooden kitchen replaced, which even the kitchen fitters commented " it will smell better now" which added to my paranoia.

The smell has now gone, but we also used diffusers, candles, rooms sprays, to try to associate a nice smell when we came in as I was getting to the stage of was it in my nose or does it actually still smell. Even now before I have guests over I spray the downstairs and light candles, as the paranoia remains a little.

I loathe artificial smells... sprays, plug-ins etc.

However... I use an electric aroma diffuser with essential oils and it is fantastic. Amazon do them for about £20. I love the moist subtle fragrance it kicks out. You fill it with water, add a few drops of oil and it runs for about 4 - 6 hours. Or until you turn it off.

The pic is similar to mine. I turn off the colours though.

I was given an expensive scented candle. Reeked like a bastard even wrapped up and once lit - horrendous choking fumes. Had to chuck it.

Don't replace one stink with another.

Aldi have some exceptionally good candles and diffusers, so popular that theyre sold out in couple of days

Crazy3 · 08/08/2018 12:14

You can get electric steam diffusers for essential oils. Also put a cotton pad in your hoover with essential oil on it

Making marmalade or candied orange peel is the single best thing I'v ever found for making the house smell fabulous for days, but if you don't have a kitchen that's not going to help. I think I'd go with bicarb to remove anything left and essential oils dropped into hot water. I like lemongrass, or neroli
