to want ds to continue to use booster seat even if he's over 12 years old, but under 135cm, even if he consideres it uncool...

@bostonkremekrazy in your chat you linked to the average 9/10 year old is 135cm so would no longer need a booster seat. So expecting a 12 year old, who is possibly in 2nd year of secondary school is harsh and unessecary!

lasfraak · 07/08/2018 21:37

according to that link a 9 year old is already over 138, so already more than tall enough

bostonkremekrazy · 07/08/2018 21:39

@Lazypuppy - my child will use a booster seat until age 12 or 135cm....no ifs or buts - our older child did and the younger ones will too. I dont' care what decision other parents come to, makes no difference to me. My child spent year 7 sat on a booster sat - he didn't care what anyone else thought either......he also wears a hat when he rides a bike or scoots, because we care more about their safety than about them looking cool.
Nothing harsh or unnecessary about that.....in our parenting opinion the booster seat is necessary, that's why we insist on it.

goforthandmultiply · 07/08/2018 21:45

My DC is 11 and still well under the height. They sit happily on the seat even if their friends are in the car. No bullying issues because their friends aren't assholes. Who would even be randomly looking in a car for signs of a blaster seat anyway? That's just weird. It's not a high backed one just a slap black regular seat that blends into the car seats.

When they don't use it the seat belt cuts into their neck. It's comfort as well as safety.

Lazypuppy · 07/08/2018 21:45

@bostonkremekrazy yes until 12 years old! I completely agree. Or 135cm. I'm not disagreeing with either of those.

OP's child is 12 and she still wants him to use a booster seat that's my issue

Jupiter9 · 07/08/2018 21:46

My friends son loves his booster seat. It helps him look out of the windows on the way to college. When he arrives he can see his friends waiting for him.

Lazypuppy · 07/08/2018 21:47

@goforthandmultiply they are happy in the booster seats that great! I just don't think OP's 12yo should be made to sit in a booster seat when he has said it is embarrasing.

tor8181 · 07/08/2018 21:49

my 8 y old(last week) has never been in a seat

my oh has only been driving since may 2017 and when we went to halfords to get a seat(he was 6 at the time) we were told hes to big

when i was confused about the law (i thought it was up till 12 no matter what size)i was told its 135cm and 85 pounds which he was way over at the time
hes now 5ft already and 111 pounds

mikado1 · 07/08/2018 21:49

I thought booster seats were illegal now in the UK and children were to stay in hbb until 135 (I thought it was 150 before this thread though).

My 6yo ds gets laughed at for sitting in a 'baby seat' ie his hbb! This from other 6&7yos!! Tiny ds3 will be the 12yo still in one..

bostonkremekrazy · 07/08/2018 21:52

mikado1 - if you have previously bought the booster seat you may continue using it.

150cm is safer yes, but the law is 135cm or 12 years whichever is first.

many parents don't bother with booster seats sadly.....

Jupiter9 · 07/08/2018 21:56

I would sit in gel seat booster for long journeys. More for comfort. Would any of you?

centerparcs · 07/08/2018 21:59

bostonkremekrazy yes he is tallest in his small class but not hugely so, there are a few that look tiny compared to him but also a few not far off his height. He has always been tall but doesn’t stand out as being crazily so, amongst his peers. I’m shocked at the height of some kids going to secondary here. Seems very small. But then I am from a tall family

AliMonkey · 07/08/2018 22:06

DS is 11 (about to start secondary) and still in booster seat - was in HBB until about 9 when I agreed he could move over as he was 135cm and embarrassed. (Though he does still sometimes say on long journeys he wishes he still had HBB so could go to sleep more comfortably.) But he is staying in booster until 150cm, same as DD did, as that's safest. Only thing I don't insist on now is him carrying it with him if going in friends' cars. (Not that it's any more safe, but I do get that it's embarrassing and he's not normally going anywhere at high speeds.)

DD hit 150cm and I said she could come off the booster and she actually decided she was more comfy still on it so stayed on it for a few more months.

Oldraver · 07/08/2018 22:13

DS has always been small and light for his age so was in his booster until recently and he's 12.5..we even bought a new one a year or so ago when we got a car with IsoFix..

No one at school knew he was in a booster so no teasing, and it also had the added benefit of a strap to pull the seat belt to the right height

lasfraak · 07/08/2018 22:30

@centerparcs - I agree with you, my dd is not tall compared to classmates, there are some taller than her. I didn't know there were such small kids in secondary, but then again there must be short and tall in this world

Vinorosso74 · 07/08/2018 22:43

I think once he's over 12 no need for it.
My DD is 8 and 141cm. We kept her in HBB for a while after she passed 135cm but she did suddenly get too big for it.

MissWimpyDimple · 07/08/2018 22:45

DD is 11.5 and 152cm.

If you are looking for approximate average heights, look in European clothes. H&M for example.

140cm is equivalent to age 10
146cm to age 11
152 to age 12

MissWimpyDimple · 07/08/2018 22:47

Sorry too soon. She just finally ditched the booster seat. Her shoulders were digging into the HBB and even in the backless one she was too tall. Specially in the front.

I think you have to be sensible about it.

boefmom · 08/08/2018 08:19

A lof of different opinions here. But the difference in height is huge...

Ds was 4'5 on his 12th birthday, so the two came together !

Dd on the other hand was 4'5 already on her 9th birthday, so she got rid of it much sooner.
