...to find it appalling that 50% of people need antidepressants to do their jobs?

Bouquetsofdynomite · 01/06/2007 20:40

Heard a very rough statistic from a GP today that said about 50% of his patients have been on anti-depressants at some time.
What is it with this country? Why do we feel the need to work ourselves into ill health? The whole work-life balance thing seems to be a complete myth, people are still doing way too much unpaid overtime.
I'm not being unsympathetic here, my OH is mid-meltdown right now, and it seems to be part of the fabric of our culture. When I think of Britain I think of anonymous people at desks like tiny robots in a big machine that doesn't care, or even sickly Victorians working themselves to an early grave in mills and factories.

Agree with the sentiment but what makes you think it is all work-related? Some of his patients may be on anti-ds for other reasons.

Heathcliffscathy · 01/06/2007 20:48

what edam said. in spades.

GibbonInARibbon · 01/06/2007 20:50

I was on them for a year, not work related at all.

Depression usually has deep roots.

Bouquetsofdynomite · 01/06/2007 20:51

You're right the ADs don't have to be work-related, I haven't stated my debate very clearly . It was just something to start a debate on British over-work culture.

How odd.

I had always assumed from this site alone, that more people who didn;t work outside the home were on ADs than those who did. By a very large margin.

I have often felt that those people in work were much less likely to be depressed.

colditz · 01/06/2007 20:54

I found that my depression lifts considerably when I have a job.

NikkiBFG · 01/06/2007 20:55

Come and work for my evil boss and if you aren't quaffing prozac by end of it, I'll faint with shock!!

Enid · 01/06/2007 20:55

If I didnt work I would be gobbling down the ADs I suspect

Work can add to it. I did walk out of work and was signed off for months, bt it wasn't the reason for it.

Like colditz said, it can help take your mind off it too.

pointydog · 01/06/2007 20:56

I was looking for a job and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable noooww

GibbonInARibbon · 01/06/2007 20:57

x posts with fio. I agree. I had therapy for a year and thankfully have not suffered a bout of depression since - 3 years [proud]

NuttyMuffins · 01/06/2007 20:58

Thats odd because I am pretty sure I would feel one hundred times better than I do if I had a job.

bettybobo · 01/06/2007 21:02

just increased hours from 3 to 4 days a week and feel better! eeek, but did have pnd so it can be a way to get out of it. didnt use ads though.

It's amazing just how many people are/have been on them. At least the stigma isn't what it used to be.

ELF1981 · 01/06/2007 21:21

If you are only referring to work related stress, I got this in my inbox today from a motivational speaker.

"What tricks do you play on yourself to keep going in an unbalanced state?

The ?Keep me hanging on? trick:
?It?s only for a little while then I?ll rest/slow down/get organised?

The ?Minimising? trick:

?It?s not so bad really? (only causing me irritable bowel, palpitations, lost sleep, headaches, migraines, missed appointments, short temper?)

The ?At least it?s only me that?s suffering? trick
When you?re out of balance, others are affected. When you are in balance, it gives others an opportunity to get balanced too.

But here?s an idea?

Take 1 deep breath right now?ask yourself; ?what does my body need right now??

Notice what answer you get, and then your response to that.

Is it balanced, healthy, caring, is it something you would say to someone you cared about?

Have fun with this concept and try a new trick if you haven?t already done it:

The ?I?ll be sneakily nice to myself when I?m not expecting it? trick

I send this month?s message with a wry smile on my face, having learnt all of the above only this week and not for the first time. There?s an Indigo Girls song that goes; ?The hardest to learn is the least complicated? and ain?t that the truth? Sometimes we even have to experience things more than once before we really change how we do things for good. There is hope for us all, for in every moment of every day there is an opportunity for choice and in that is an opportunity for change. One day at a time. There really are ways in which you manage balance - lots of ways; learn from your own achievements!

Enjoy the sunshine, breathe it in to all those places that have been winter-worn."

ZacheryQuack · 01/06/2007 21:22

My use of ADs wasn't work related. Just life related.

rollonsummerholidays · 01/06/2007 21:57

wow i like it elf1981 so true a partners depression has such side effects

sauce · 01/06/2007 21:59

It's not just the UK. It's everywhere. I don't think it's work so much as lack of friends/family support. Life is frantic & people tend to be selfish.

morningpaper · 01/06/2007 22:01

If I didnt work I would be gobbling down the ADs I suspect

lol Enid

I think that 1 in 4 people suffer from depression or mental distress at some point in their lives - not all of these will use antidepressants. So a 50% figure is unlikely to be true, unless your GP is just contagiously depressing.

GibbonInARibbon · 01/06/2007 22:02

pmsl MP

PissyGalore · 01/06/2007 22:03

im pretty sure id be a lot happier with a good job.
not that i could get ad's out of my doc for love nor money (i went to him with pnd about 4 times and was brushed off)

sauce · 01/06/2007 22:04

Anyway, if the drugs are there & you need them, take the damn things!

sauce · 01/06/2007 22:04

oops - too many martoonis - hick! - & carrot sticks. I'm off to me cot.
