Shitty email from rental agent

AIBU to be annoyed by this? Have rented our current house for a couple of months now and today I got an email from the agent saying they’d had a complaint from some neighbours about our car being parked on the ‘green’ (crappy grassy area in front of a few of the houses). Firstly, it wasn’t our car! And secondly, how dare they start accusing us of something on the word of an unnamed neighbour? Our landlord hasn’t been in touch, so it’s clearly not an issue they’re aware of (or at all Hmm) but how dare a neighbour go tittle tattling to the people we rent our house through, whether we’d done anything or not?

WWYD? So far I wrote back a one line email saying it wasn’t our car (which is always in the drive) but I’m appalled they’ve taken the word of a local busybody and essentially told me off for something I haven’t done. Even if I had done it, it’s not illegal! For context, it’s a very naice area, lots of retired people round a close and just a couple of families. It’s expensive (£2K/month) and I get the feeling the neighbours look down on us for renting (one came and asked if I was the new tenant when we moved in, very snooty). We’re just a boring family, 2.4 DC, both at work during the day and DC at school/holiday club. It’s really upset me!

@Powerless Have you read the letter?

Powerless · 06/08/2018 17:59

@OftenHangry No I read the OP!!!! Properly Hmm

biscuitmillionaire · 06/08/2018 17:59

OP: you need to post some of the wording of the email, as some posters are assuming they just 'sought to clarify' if it was you, while others agree that it was an unjustified telling off. What did they say?

Whyohsky · 06/08/2018 18:02

This is the email (minus house number):

We have had reports from a neighbour that your car had been parked on the green outside number X They have kindly asked that you not park on the green in the future.

A - not my car
B - report from which neighbour/busybody?
C - it’s actually not illegal or against any rules to park on the ‘green’ so not for the neighbour (or anyone) to say others can’t park there!!!

I’m surprised - though maybe I shouldn’t be - that the agent felt it was her place to be judge and jury.

The wording of that email is perfectly fine. Not cheeky at all.

IceCreamFace · 06/08/2018 18:04

YABU based on that email. They've literally just passed on what the neighbour said. They haven't actually said that you HAVE been parking there just that a neighbour has reported you for parking there. You just write back as you have that this isn't your car, your car is always parked in your drive. Please inform said neighbour of this fact. No drama at all.
What did you expect the rental company to do?

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/08/2018 18:05

The landlord hasn’t been in touch because the agent is managing the property. They won’t tell the ll unless there is an actual issue. This isn’t one. By asking what else will the agent believe, you are catastrophising. Some people have way too much time on their hands and/or are really spiteful. Agents know this.

IceCreamFace · 06/08/2018 18:06

I’m surprised - though maybe I shouldn’t be - that the agent felt it was her place to be judge and jury.

They haven't been judge and jury they've literally just told you what a neighbour said, the tone doesn't read as rude at all and it looks like it's specifically worded to avoid implying that you have definitely been parking there.

OftenHangry · 06/08/2018 18:06

@Powerless yeah. Because that told you exactly HOW it was written....

The email is absolutely fine. I seriously can't see a problem. Polite and that's it.

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/08/2018 18:07

Cross post.
The agent hasn’t accused you of anything. They’ve been judge and jury to nothing. They’ve relayed what was said to them by your neighbour. The email in no way states they believe said neighbour.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/08/2018 18:07

Oh FFS!

That's a perfectly reasonable letter. You're being extremely silly!

The agent hasn't judged you, hasn't decided you ahve done santing wrong. They've simply passed on a complaint and a request from a neighbour.

You ABVVVU to focus your ire on the agent!

RainySeptember · 06/08/2018 18:09

As suspected, reasonable letter.

RainySeptember · 06/08/2018 18:11

A - and you've told them that.

B - who cares.

C - not illegal but potentially damaging the grass and a bit inconsiderate. I can think of a dozen things that aren't illegal but might annoy a neighbour.

Can't you just forget it now?

LeroyJenkins · 06/08/2018 18:11

That's not snippy

Zebra31 · 06/08/2018 18:12

YABU. This is bonkers.

  1. that email isn’t telling you off. The agent is passing information on. You have responded and the agent will probably pass that on if the complaint was received via email.

  2. you are seriously over reacting. Do you usually take offence so easily over nothing?

Hopeandeggs · 06/08/2018 18:12

I haven't read the thread fully but you are massively over reacting!
If there's an agent involved they are paid to sort this shit so the landlord doesn't have to.

Seriously grow a thicker skin and just email back politely that it's not your car sorry so nothing to do with you.

Cavycavaprosecco · 06/08/2018 18:13

You have a chip on your shoulder.

Hopeandeggs · 06/08/2018 18:15

And they won't tell you which neighbour it is!
I know this as I share a hallway with another flat and they think I'm the one who has been complaining about them as they are new but really it was the shop underneath who has now fucked off and left me with the consequences.

HowsAnnie25 · 06/08/2018 18:16

The email was fine in my opinion.

Whyohsky · 06/08/2018 18:17

So I have to put up with malicious accusations because
I’m a tenant?

OP posts:
frijolesandstuff · 06/08/2018 18:17

You sound really offended so I'm assuming the letter was pretty ugly.

It doesn't help you to feel welcome, I know, but try to move on.

RainySeptember · 06/08/2018 18:18

You have to be making this up. Nobody could be this upset by that letter.

It's not malicious. It's a fucking misunderstanding. Now sorted.

Nicknacky · 06/08/2018 18:18

FFS it’s not a malicious accusation. Get a grip.

RainySeptember · 06/08/2018 18:18

frijoles, op posted the letter for us.

kes53 · 06/08/2018 18:19

I'd say there is a real assumption by agent that OP was in the wrong. Agent should have used phrases such as "...if this is your car it would be good if you could refrain..." if not your car then please let me know and i will inform complainant...sorry but had to follow up..."
