Outfit to wear on plane

Ginger1982 · 06/08/2018 14:15

So DH, DS and I are off on our first family holiday abroad next month. Shopping yesterday I bought a pair of wide legged, floaty trousers and a couple of t shirts to wear on the plane as opposed to jeans. Tried trousers on when I got home and they are so comfy. When paired with t shirt, DH commented it looked a bit as if I was wearing pyjamas. He has a slight point.

WIBU to wear the outfit anyway? It's a 4 hour flight where I'll probably be more concerned about occupying DS than whether or not I am a flying fashionista 😀

I was once on a flight with Victoria Beckham, long time ago now, she just had 2 lads?
Once we'd taken off, etc, she went to the lo and changed from her snaps-for-the-paps gear she wore, into a comfy jogging suit, to change back into her "uniform" as she called it, just before the descent.
Good enough for her? Good enough for me!
And she was lovely, as were the boysSmile

Don't want to lower the mood, but I do aim to wear proper shoes on the plane eg. converse or similar.

If you ever had to exit the plane er, quickly, you wouldn't want to be doing it in flip-flops.

BarbaraofSevillle · 06/08/2018 15:02

I fly in my heaviest clothes and shoes to save luggage allowance and so I have something warm to come back to the UK in. Style icon I am not.

The one time I flew from Liverpool was a revelation. Some of the ladies there really put thought into their flying outfits, but have their hair in rollers, presumably so they are all glam on their first night out when they get there.

Everyoneiswingingit · 06/08/2018 15:03

How is there room to change and wash in plane loos? Are you a first class traveller shots?

SimonBridges · 06/08/2018 15:04

When you are tiny like VB there is room.

BarbaraofSevillle · 06/08/2018 15:05

I know swinging. The first time I ever went to the toilet on the plane, I squeezed myself in there (and I'm not particularly large) and sat there thinking 'fuck knows how people have sex in here'.

Everyoneiswingingit · 06/08/2018 15:05

I guess but the queue for the loo would put me off just in case the door flew open. I don't even go for a wee!

Ginger1982 · 06/08/2018 15:05

Lol for those asking I bought the trousers from New Look Apricot collection!

We do a lot of long haul and depending on my mood I either wear a loose dress with soft cotton leggings, sandals and a long line dressy cardigan with large scarf. I bring socks in my bag and can wrap the scarf like a blanket. I have some very soft lightweight wool ones.

OR yoga style bottoms, soft t-shirt and cashmere hoody.

It is all about comfort and I cannot do restrictive waist bands as I bloat something terrible on flights, especially long haul.

We are flying short haul next week and I am planning soft harem style pants with a top, scarf, sandals and jewellery. Maybe a light weight cardigan.

I don't like flying in jeans

MinaPaws · 06/08/2018 15:10

Add chunky necklace or scarf and a bracelet, nicely painted toenails etc and it won't look like you rolled out of bed. Got to be comfortable on a flight.

Have a great holiday

CMOTDibbler · 06/08/2018 15:10

I fly long haul a lot (for work, in the back of the plane). I wear either yoga pants with a long line vest and drapey cardi plus flip flops or trainers depending on temperature and scarf, or a jersey maxi skirt and t shirt, cardi etc. Sometimes a lightweight hoody and I always have thick socks and a pashmina.
I don't care how I look tbh, I just want to be comfortable!

AviatorShades · 06/08/2018 15:12

My Top Tip for when you're flying AA is to look ultra-smart at check in...if there's room, there's a likelihood they'll upgrade you! Emirates are the same. Well, it works for meGrin

ShotsFired · 06/08/2018 15:15

@Everyoneiswingingit

Business, not First (one day...!). You just get very good at utilizing every hook and flat surface and changing clothes 'vertically'! And by washing I really mean little more than washing face with flannel and some more deodorant and brushing hair (and aforementioned clothes/underwear change). But it really helps to make you feel more with it after a long flight.

If I am really minging/spilt something etc, I can nip into the lounge on arrival and have a shower/proper cleanup there too.

Sparklesocks · 06/08/2018 15:19

I consider planes a fashion ‘neutral zone’…it’s all about comfort over style..especially for long haul!
My go to is my pair of floaty cotton trousers with an elasticated waist band, a tshirt, trainers and a hoody if it gets cold on the plane. It’s very casual! I also sometimes wear leggings with big tees.

Nobody really notices/cares what their fellow passengers are wearing, we all just want to get there as comfy as possible 😊

serbska · 06/08/2018 15:26

Seriously?

After a successful take off the chances of you needing shoes are like, so minimal its not even worth considering. Once you've taken off and the seat belt sign is off, change into your comfy slipper socks.

Then, when they say they are starting the descent put on your shoes again.

serbska · 06/08/2018 15:29

Huh? Why would this be difficult unless you are really mobility impaired? It is easy to change in economy toilets even! Seat down, clothes on seat, change item by item. Sometimes there are hooks on the back of doors even.

Fatbelliedgirl · 06/08/2018 15:30

Linen trousers. Cotton t-shirt or vest top. Trainers or flat sandals (not flip flops). Perhaps a light cardigan in case chilly on the plane.

whattimeislove · 06/08/2018 15:36

Trouble with shoes is you need to be able to slip them on and off to go to the loo (I went in just my socks once and never again).
Also my feet really swell up so I have to have stretchy shoes or I'll never get them back on again

CherryPavlova · 06/08/2018 15:42

My husband changes into PJs to fly and asks cabin crew to hang his suit up. I usoplump for lightweight leggings and a jersey tunic dress so very comfortable and little risk of exposure when lying down.
If it’s cold I’d put warmer layers in my hand luggage.

Stephwiththecurls · 06/08/2018 15:52

It’s funny, I was at the airport yesterday looking around at what everyone was wearing, and thinking you literally couldn’t look out of place in anything. Except possibly a ball gown.

There were people in full make up, huge heels and tight dresses looking as though they were about to go clubbing, others in actual pyjamas and then everything in between.

Wear whatever you like!

ShumpaLumpa · 06/08/2018 15:58

When paired with t shirt, DH commented it looked a bit as if I was wearing pyjamas.

I doubt it. Does he want you to be uncomfortable but smart in restrictive clothing?

Wide legged culottes are all the rage at the moment.

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 06/08/2018 17:00

Manchester airport was hilarious for people watching recently (though a horrific experience overall and I'd never voluntarily use it again)

But there were loads of women in FULL make-up, massive long nails and curlers in their hair. They were not all travelling together either.

Saw plenty of PJ's and onsies with what looked like slippers too. I was literally agog!
