To not accept that there is 'period poverty' in the UK.....?

rosetree7 · 05/08/2018 20:27

Fully expecting to be told I am BU, but I genuinely do not get this 'period poverty' malarkey.

Some reports say periods cost £42-45 a month (£500 a year.) Never in my life have I - or anyone else I know - spent £42-45 a MONTH on their period. Not even a tenth of that actually.

Some of the things they (supposedly) spend money on are tampons and STs (obviously...) You can get a pack of sanitary towels for less than a pound. Less than 50p in some shops!

And also mooncups.

Although mooncups cost £16 to £22, most mooncups will last 10 years, so you'd only buy 3 or 4 in your lifetime!!! And they also spend on pain relief - but paracetamol and ibuprofen are 16 to 26p a packet from Wilkos. And plenty of other shops sell them for a similar price!

Oh and apparently, they have to keep spending money on new underwear every month. What a load of shit.. I have bought 18 pairs of underpants in 5 years, (at a cost of around £25 for the entire 5 years!) 5 pairs of them are dark coloured - and I wear them for my periods. Never in my life have I bought new underpants for every new period.

So what is this all about? And how on earth are they coming up with such a ludicrous figure as £42-45 a month?! Confused I mean, some girls are apparently using toilet roll as they 'can't afford' sanitary towels? In most cases, toilet roll is more expensive than sanitary towels FGS!

I'll never be surprised here Portia, not since the day that eugenics was suggested as a solution to the 'problem' of me and my children.

Pissedoffdotcom · 06/08/2018 21:47

Where exactly are folk meant to stick their DC whilst they take on these extra jobs that are floating around for the taking??? Actually, where are the extra jobs?

Skyejuly · 06/08/2018 21:50

If anyone in Suffolk coastal wants to donate let me know as I co ordinate red box.

MrSpock · 06/08/2018 21:50

Choutted

I’m autistic too. I have aspergers, mildly, and have recently been diagnosed with ADHD. The world is too harsh for me. Too...sharp. It drains my energy and I crash.

I appealed it and was told on my report I’m an “educated articulate young woman who is well dressed” obviously people with autism and MH issues look like tramps? Hmm disabled people aren’t allowed to look nice and have qualifications.

I did have a deficiency before pregnancy but I’ve been on supplements.

MrSpock · 06/08/2018 21:51

not since the day that eugenics was suggested as a solution to the 'problem' of me and my children.

This makes me so angry.

BishopBrennansArse · 06/08/2018 21:51

Back up their chuff, @Pissedoffdotcom

PortiaCastis · 06/08/2018 21:51

Thing is Bishop people would never say that to you in RL as they know what they'd get and rightly so. Keyboard warriors are really insecure pathetic idiots how disgusting saying that to you grrrr I hope you told them where they could go

Pissedoffdotcom · 06/08/2018 21:52

Bishop i'd defo be in period poverty after shoving her back...no sani pads in the world would control that aftermath

Dottierichardson · 06/08/2018 21:53

What a load of nonsense, we've seen with tax credits etc the effects of giving free things to people. It's created a whole host of work shy people.

Education is the key to girls having successful futures. If their parents are not providing the basics, it's gong to take more than a few freebies to ensure they are successful in adult life.

You still haven't provided any facts/figures to back up your biased claims. In addition to which I wonder how you justify your assertion that 'free bleeding' can be anything other than humiliating and unpleasant for the one experiencing it, or distracting for other pupils. Also if sanpro is as cheap, as so many arguing against period poverty claim, isn't it worth risking that small amount of money to bet on people's future?

Neshoma · 06/08/2018 21:53

@Boxsets most certainly is not an old namechanger. Why would you say that other than to disparage her comments and opinions?

PortiaCastis · 06/08/2018 21:53

Grrrrr I'm angry now
What a fucking cheek grrrrr

RebelRogue · 06/08/2018 21:54

Why the fuck does it matter?!? Seriously why?!?
Is being right and bashing people on benefits really more important than kids living in poverty in general?
Are you that petty and cruel that you'd rather deny this shit happens and begrudge girls as young as 10 something as basic as san pro?

I honestly don't give a shit if kids are in poverty due to lack of money, budgeting,or feckless parents. It's irrelevant to them. It's irrelevant to their well being. It's not their fault. It doesn't justify turning a blind eye. They don't get a choice or a say, they don't have any control. They just get to live it and hopefully survive it.

The callousness and pettiness on this thread is mind boggling .

BishopBrennansArse · 06/08/2018 21:55

I actually went into what I now know is autistic shutdown, cried for days. But hey, words on a screen, right? HQ pretty much said they weren't going to stifle debate and if I was feeling particularly sensitive maybe leaving would be a good idea. So I knew where disabled posters stood with HQ from that day. I had too many friends here to leave but I now know that very few around here actively challenge these views and HQ see it as debate. So now I realise it's a troll or right wing fanatics playground I post with that in mind.

bananafish81 · 06/08/2018 21:56

2up2manydown Are you taking the piss here? Even an teenager would know what flooding means.

Until I read MN threads I had no idea the extent of the suffering that so many women go through every month. I have never had anything remotely like a heavy period, so although I could obviously hazard a guess as to what flooding meant, I certainly didn't appreciate the extent of bleeding that meant. I had no idea that it was medically possible to bleed to the extent that's been described on this thread - and certainly wasn't aware that it was sadly the norm for so many women. People don't tend to talk about the nature of their periods in day to day conversation, so I certainly didn't imagine the extent of what 'flooding' actually meant.

MN threads have been a complete eye opener and I'm just so sorry that so many women have to suffer so much - and that this should be made so very much worse by period poverty is utterly tragic. I'm grateful to those posters who've shared the link to the Red Box project - fantastic cause to which I shall be donating, it's just so sad that it has to exist in the first place

Dottierichardson · 06/08/2018 21:56

Dottie, your Telegraph link had nothing to so with periods or blood,
it was about unwashed bedding.

Please stop dramatising everything and trying to find tenuous links

Bloodstains on dirty bedding contain proteins that attract bugs such as bedbugs, this fact was raised in reply to someone who believed blood-stained bedding was of no consequence. I suppose working out that link requires lateral thinking skills, I should have anticipated that when posting. BTW when are you going to provide any evidence for your position?

MrSpock · 06/08/2018 21:57

Bishops

I was called negligent and abusive for refusing to hold my autistic son down and force feed him non necessary medicine when it sent him into severe meltdown.

I think you and I spoke on an old username of mine actually. About similar shite like this.

BishopBrennansArse · 06/08/2018 21:58

@Dottierichardson trolls are genuinely too thick to do that kind of thinking, smashing their fists into a keyboard uses their entire brain function.

Atthebottomofthesea · 06/08/2018 21:58

It doesn't really matter the reasons why some, young girls especially, don't have access to San pro. If it isn't in the house and there is no way of providing it then it isn't there to use. Lets just have some for women and girls to use.

Dottierichardson · 06/08/2018 21:59

becomes a compound verb so should be hyphenated. oops that should obviously be compound adjective, never let it be said I'm not willing to own up to my mistakes.

BishopBrennansArse · 06/08/2018 21:59

@MrSpock probably. I've been here a long time, namechanged once because a right wing troll ended up stalking me and posting stuff about my benefits claiming status on completely irrelevant threads (like baby names for instance)

PortiaCastis · 06/08/2018 22:00

I'm sorry you had to go through that Bishop and I know words on a screen can hurt, I didn't see you being horribly abused like that or I would have fought your corner with you and reported the scummy person(s) that posted that vile shite.

MrSpock · 06/08/2018 22:00

Bishops

I’ve name changed a few times and do for threads I think might be easy to identify me by.

What a complete wanker!

BishopBrennansArse · 06/08/2018 22:01

Thanks Portia. Was a long time ago now, different username. Poster very similar to boxsets, actually.

Willow2017 · 06/08/2018 22:03

Benefits allow for a good standard of living

ODFOD try telling that to someone who has a disablity who has been refused disability award and told to go find a job! £70 a week is a fucking fortune, what on earth are they moaning about?

Walk the 20 miles to the hospital and save money, you lazy sod.
Walk to the jobcentre to sign on too and have the clerk laugh along with you as if any employer will touch you.
Walk to the nearest supermarket 7 miles away...
Only heat one room of your house in winter for 2 hours before you go to bed cos it costs too much, pah! being frozen aint so bad.
Dont buy the food you should be eating due to your condition cos it costs too much, get that budget sorted out you will feel better on a daily diet of value pasta, tomato sauce, baked beans and freaking lentils and who freaking cares anyway?
Batch cook for the freezer you cant afford to fill never mind buy.

Yep its as easy to improve your life as it is turning a blind eye to people in dire straights in this country.

PortiaCastis · 06/08/2018 22:07

Some folk shouldn't be let loose near a keyboard and as I previously stated they wouldn't say boo to a goose in RL. My Mum calls the internet a vehicle for arseholes anonymous and she's usually right about things
