To find dogs licking people’s faces a bit grim?

Ok, firstly, I’m not a dog person, and I’m an emetophobe. Both of which might explain a lot!

We have a dog to stay with us this week (me and 2 DC, age 10 and 8). Dog is super cute, and the kids love her, which is great as they are not used to dogs at all and we were all a bit worried as to how the kids would get on with the dog.

However, they all like each other a lot, and there appears to be a mutual enjoyment of face licking. Including licking on their lips.

I feel rather 😱 about it all. My main concern is that it’ll make the kids ill. AIBU, or is that a genuine concern? I’m aware that with my emetophobia I’m prone to overestimating risk, hence posting here to get opinions on whether I’m BU or justified in my worrying.

What are people’s feelings on dogs licking kids’ faces?!

So skanky. I'd never have a dog in my house and I never go to anyone's house if they have a pet either. Dirty. No way would I let one touch me let alone kick me.

aurynne · 06/08/2018 09:35

LEMtheoriginal how many cases of toxicara-induced blindness are there on average every year in the UK?

SarcasticFringehead · 06/08/2018 09:37

Revolting. All dogs are revolting, I do not understand humans wanting to share their homes with these animals.

Here's a link to the story a pp mentioned about the man who got licked by a dog and lost all his limbs. HOW is it worth it? A dog vs being left like that? I think it's lunacy, and revolting to let your children grow up subjected to such filth.

fussychica · 06/08/2018 09:39

Absolutely vile.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 06/08/2018 09:41

Don't be so dramatic Sarcastic. How many people do you know that this has happened to?
I've not watched the video btw.

SarcasticFringehead · 06/08/2018 09:42

I'd argue with your comments, ucant but like you said, can't argue with stupid.

@keyboardkate, totally agree with you. So much sense!

brizzledrizzle · 06/08/2018 09:44

It's disgusting.

SarcasticFringehead · 06/08/2018 09:44

I don't think that man thinks it's dramatic! It happens. Why take the risk?
Not to mention all the dog bites and killings.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 06/08/2018 09:50

I've had a dog all through my life. I've never been bitten by any of them.

I don't know anyone that has lost limbs due to being licked either.

Cyw2018 · 06/08/2018 10:00

My dog licks my face I don't mind as I know he is regularly wormed.

brizzledrizzle · 06/08/2018 10:02

OK, he's wormed but he's presumably like most dogs and licks other dogs bottoms.

Joyousjobhunt · 06/08/2018 10:09

My dh and d's are fine with it, I think it's manky. I know our dog is trying to show affection but it just feels grim to me so I'll let him lick my cheek or chin every now and then instead.

I'm more worried about him getting excited and nippy at dad's face than worried about germs from licking. Dogs can be lovely but they can still be unpredictable animals at the end of the day.

Joyousjobhunt · 06/08/2018 10:10

Hate new phones, autocorrect gone mad. I meant dd's face not dad's or d's.

betterthanbutter · 06/08/2018 10:19

Mine don't lick my face but I do share ice creams and my fork with them

I find the thought of that even worse than the thought of licking faces!!

I think your attitude to dogs sounds healthy OP. Encourage the children to enjoy them but draw the line at face licking

Thanks Ghoul. I’m somewhat reassured that it’s not just me who finds it a bit grim!

And I know about other germ risks around, I just try REALLY hard not to think about it!!

LEM thanks for that about the working. She is wormed regularly so hopefully I don’t need to add that to my list of worries.

Re dogs biting, I got bitten by a dog when I was about 6, so I’m pretty wary of dogs for that reason too. This one is very placid and calm, but I get that any animal can be unpredictable so you really never know.

Its foul.

Dogs lick their knackers all the time, why anyone would let a dog lick their face is beyond me.

MisAGenGastic · 06/08/2018 10:26

Cyw2018 Do you lick your dogs anus? Because worms or not that is essentially what you're doing.

Daxleo · 06/08/2018 10:35

Yanbu

Absolutely vile.
I have never personally owned a dog myself but alot of my family members have and I was always quite fond of them when I visited .
That was until I met my DP and in doing so spent alot of time with his dog.

i HATE dogs now
I didn't realise how dirty and disgusting they are !
My DPs dog would have a shit, eat it's shit, sick up the shit and then eat it again . In its own bed .
Horrible creature .

GiddyGardner · 06/08/2018 10:39

Off topic a little, but as mentioned my lovely girl eats cat shit, and anything else she can (including drunk's vomit, Bleugh) ...but she will not eat a McDonald's hash brown, not sure what that says about McDonald's hash browns, but it can't be good.

ferrier · 06/08/2018 11:05

I have never known as dog that licks it's own bottom. Not even sure that most of them can reach.

ferrier · 06/08/2018 11:06

Apologies for typos.

Ucantarguewistupid · 06/08/2018 11:16

Humans do do all the things I have mentioned. Not sure what could be argued about there. Whether the relative digustingness is comparable? As this thread shows some think dog licking ok others not so all is subjective. But humans do do the things I mentioned. They even film themselves doing it and share with others and watch others doing it.

Humans also sneeze and cough into their hands and go about toucing things and people without washing. Same with going to loo and not washing hands afterwards. We are fairly disgusting ourselves.

In terms of who is more dangerous humans or dogs - really can't see how that can be argued with either. The evidence is easily found for yourself if you don't want to trust Dr Ian Dunbar. It's easy to find corroborating evidence.

In short. Each to their own. If dogs disgust you stay clear. No need to impose on others. If you can't stay clear try to put it all in perspective. Maybe that will help the judgyness. Or not.

Will leave you all to it now as stoopid people are now here unable to argue or debate so resort to insults. Yaaaaawwwwwnnnnn

Joyousjobhunt · 06/08/2018 11:18

ferrier when we first got our pup I was quite upset to realise if he had a dirty bottom I'd have to clean it for him, unlike my lovely cats who clean their own! I genuinely didn't realise they couldn't reach Grin.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 06/08/2018 11:19

We love our dogs but no, they do not lick faces. There is a current story (see most online newspapers from a few days ago) regarding a guy in Wisconsin. Dog lover, always around animals, happy to let them lick his face. He developed sepsis after contracting Capnocytophaga canimorsus from a dog (apparently almost 60 per cent of dogs carry Capnocytophaga canimorsus) he has had to have his legs and hands amputated. This bacteria is usually transferred by a dog bite but can be transferred by a lick. There was a case a couple of years ago in Britain, elderly woman developed sepsis after her dog repeatedly licked her face. Yes it’s rare, but it’s still a risk.

MisAGenGastic · 06/08/2018 11:42

And you would let it now lick your face? Disgusting.
