Dog locked in car

I'll start this by saying that I am fairly certain I was not being unreasonable but am interested to know what others would have done in my situation.

Parked up at a supermarket today around midday. Temperature was roughly 26°C. My DD noticed there was a dog in a car a few cars over from us. I looked and there was a little dog (not sure of breed but it was very small but not a pup) locked in a car which was parked in direct sunlight with the windows all cracked maybe an inch max. The dog didn't seem to be in distress but was bouncing around on the back seats. I was only popping in for a few bits for a picnic so made a note to check if car was still there when I returned.

I did my shopping which probably took around 20 minutes. I exited the supermarket and the car and dog were still there. My DH sorted putting the kids and shopping in our car and I wandered over to the car with the dog. Dog seemed in the same state as before. I turned around to go and get my phone out of the car to take a pic of the registration plate so I could alert security within the supermarket when a man pushing a trolley wandered over.

I asked if it was his car and he confirmed it was. I said it was too hot for a dog to be locked in for so long. He raised his voice and semi shouted that he hadn't been long. I replied I knew he had been at least 20 minutes as the car was there when I arrived (I also know no one had gone back to the car as I had noticed him walking around the supermarket quite a few times as he had his I assume grandson in the trolley and his I assume wife was walking very slowly with a cane). He again raised his voice and said he hadn't been long. I wasn't going to argue in front of his grandchild so said his behaviour was disgusting and I returned to my car.

Was I right or was I being a nosy cow? I don't own a dog but I'd have hated to sit in direct sunlight in a locked car for at least 20 minutes. WIBU?

No ywnbu, it's 'nosy cows' like you who prevent dogs from dying every single day by looking out for animals whose owners are clearly idiots. So well done to you, perhaps the man will think twice next time Smile

Furrydogmum · 05/08/2018 18:42

No, you should have taken the photo anyway - may have made him think in future.. Hate people like that kids or pets there's no excuse!

Chalady · 05/08/2018 18:43

Im suprised it lived.

I would have rung the police and told them I needed to break the window, (as the public are advised to do this) then I would have broken it.

swapsicles · 05/08/2018 18:46

I'd have done the same.
The other week when it was again really hot a dog escaped from a car and I held onto him for 15 minutes, until we got hold of the owner by ringing a number on his tag, no idea how long he'd been in the car before he escaped and how long the owner would have been had we not called.
The owner was more fussed I had got him out the car but I told him even if he hadn't escaped I'd have took him out and its not on to leave a dog in a car on a hot day, he said he knew about dogs and it was fine, idiot!

I'm so pleased you've all agreed with me (so far!) I was doubting myself as like I said, the dog didn't seem distressed. I don't even think it was panting. Just jumping all over the back seats.

No, you’re not a nosy cow.

He’s an arse, leaving a door g in a hot car like this.

Lynne1Cat · 05/08/2018 18:54

No, you weren't being nosey. The bloke was an arsehole. Why the hell do some people STILL do that? After warnings and notifications, why take a dog out in hot weather and leave it in a boiling hot vehicle? Morons.

MrsSFirth · 05/08/2018 18:59

You did the right thing, OP.

I would've done the same.

He was aggressive because he did the wrong thing and you called him out on it.

HazzaB89 · 05/08/2018 19:01

I have no idea why people do it. I went to a huge outdoor event on Thursday where the temperature reached 30° and people were dragging their dogs around. There were water bowls and it was mainly grass but I was sweltering so they must have been too.

awful how people like that are allowed to own pets.

VeryHangryCaterpillar · 05/08/2018 19:05

What a fucking moron, it was far too hot for a dog to be left in a car today. I don’t know how anyone could be so irresponsible and stupid. He should be reported in my opinion.

CSIblonde · 05/08/2018 19:07

You weren't nosey. You were a concerned, responsible animal lover. He's an idiot. He's also bloody lucky it didn't get heatstroke and/or die.

mydogisthebest · 06/08/2018 10:55

You definitely did the right thing. It makes me so angry. People should not need to be told that dogs die in a hot car and yet still some leave them.

I have 2 dogs. They have very thick long fur. Since the heat started I have been walking them very early morning and very late evening. Some days they haven't had a walk at all because even 6am and 11pm it has been hot and humid. I feel guilty if they don't get a walk but no dog is going to die because it missed a couple of walks.

Every time I go out I see people dragging dogs along the street and yes they are usually dragging them. The dogs look miserable and are usually panting like crazy.

We went to a fete the other day. It was the hottest day of the year so far and I lost count of the number of dogs there.
