DS and his clothes...

DS (15) has decided he isn't wearing 'kids' clothes anymore. What that means is nothing size 15-16 as opposed to adults size small. All of his most recent clothes are men's small size but about half his clothes are boys 15-16 and perfectly good and he is saying he will not wear them and has removed them all from his wardrobe! I've told him - to look at them you can't tell the difference between the two unless you look at the tag and who's going to do that ?! But he is adamant he can not wear anything 'for kids' any longer! This includes all of his underwear - I buy all underwear for DS 12 and 15 in the M&S or Next boys section. So he needs loads of new stuff basically. I get it that he feels like he wants to be a man but this seems all quite unnecessary and I'm trying not to get annoyed. Do I give him money to get a load of new stuff ? AIBU? (OR IS MY DS?)

YANBU but I'd buy new stuff anyway lol!

(Has he been teased?)

RosieRainDrop · 05/08/2018 14:33

Aw bless. It's easy to forget how self conscious you feel at that age.

If you can afford it, I'd get him the basics (underwear, pjs, couple of pairs of jeans, few tees and a hoodie) and tell him he has to save up for anything else

NewYearNewMe18 · 05/08/2018 14:35

Cut the labels out of the 'kids' stuff ?

Racecardriver · 05/08/2018 14:37

Tell him to sell his stuff and buy what he wants to replace it.

AlonsoTigerHeart · 05/08/2018 14:38

Aww hes a proper grown man now.... so he can pay for his New gear, like proper grown men do

Userplusnumbers · 05/08/2018 14:38

YANBU, however, neither is your DS, and you have the opportu ity to fix it and he doesn't. Step up and make him feel better.

I'd also echo the previous posters sentiments about teasing - 15 year old boys would be vicious if they realised.

IrishMumInLondon · 05/08/2018 15:22

Thank you. I hadn't considered any teasing. But I do think we have to remember that at that age certain things feel very important that when you are older don't seem do important. So I guess I'll buy more and make a big donation of stuff to the charity shop! Thanks for the advice! (The things we have to do for our DC lol) x

I would just cut the labels out for items that are indistinguishable from those in men's sizes. But wouldn't make him wear anything that is babyish in style.

Slightly a tangent, but where are you getting all this 15-16year old stuff anyway? I've had to start buying my 14 year old men's clothes because I can't find children's stuff bigger than a 13-14 (which is too small for him) and even that is pretty limited.

mysteryfairy · 05/08/2018 16:53

Don’t replace the next boys boxers with men’s ones as part of the problem there is probably having Next emblazoned around his waistband! Tail end of sales is at least the ideal time to stock up at least! Just bought my own DS packs of 5 pairs of socks in topman for £3 for example!

Northernparent68 · 05/08/2018 17:04

Alsonso, how many 15 year olds buy their own clothes

AlonsoTigerHeart · 05/08/2018 17:15

Well mine would if he chucked out perfectly good clothes he liked because of an age label on the inside

GreenTulips · 05/08/2018 17:18

Well I'd leave to them throw them out but I wouldn't be replacing them.

Tell him to get a job and pay for his win clothes.

IrishMumInLondon · 05/08/2018 17:34

I think I understand what's going on a bit more here now actually - someone asked if there had been teasing, it hadn't occurred to me but yes - just spoke to my DS and he has "had the p**s ripped out of him" as he put it. Now I feel bad! This isn't so much the clothes as like I said most of his newest ones are men's anyway and the boys section ones you can't tell - this is about the underwear but he obviously didn't want to just come out and say it - to be honest while he obviously has been picking out his own clothes for a while I have never even asked about underwear. I just buy it and we'd never discussed it. I have always just bought underpants / briefs whatever you call them since DS both little and still do I have never bought boxers. My DH doesn't wear boxers so it never occurred to me. Apparently all but one of his friends wear boxers and he's been getting stick for it. I want up on this now consider myself education lol

I think all the boys wear boxers unless they're 3!

Buy him new undies

Grumpbum123 · 05/08/2018 17:40

I can imagine he will have been teased if he’s wearing briefs at 15. Poor boyb

MVLipwig · 05/08/2018 17:41

I didn’t think kids over 5 wore briefs, no wonder he’s getting stick! Get the lad some new pants

Dermymc · 05/08/2018 17:41

Poor kid briefs at 15!!!!

adaline · 05/08/2018 17:45

Sorry OP but no wonder he was getting picked on! Did you never think to ask him what clothes he preferred?

ManyCrisps · 05/08/2018 17:45

He must be really small then my 16 year old wears men’s large clothes and hasn’t worn kids clothes since he was 12

IrishMumInLondon · 05/08/2018 17:51

Feeling very guilty now! Needless to say will be rectifing the situation pronto!

OP posts:
PUGaLUGS · 05/08/2018 17:51

Poor lad Shock

Get him some proper underwear. Mine have worn “trunks” (slimmer fit than boxers) since they were about 6 years old.

Go to Topman.

FASH84 · 05/08/2018 17:56

Oh bless him at least he was honest with you when you asked, get him some new boxers, cut the labels out of any t shirts that look like adult ones but are from a kid's range and bin anything childish looking, as you've said you buy him small adult now anyway so it won't be long before all his stuff is adult labelled
