I might be alone on this one, but I seem to find it frustrating when people write shorthand/text style everywhere (I’m not even sure if it’s called shorthand). It might be emails, texts/WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media platforms. Sometimes (maybe I’m old) it takes me a while to decipher the message Blush. Words are shortened and changed so much so, for example like is lyk, was is wz, whenever is wneva and so on...am I alone? Maybe I ought to try harder and accept the new written mode of language...

Nope, not alone. I hadn't heard of lyk, wz and wneva. I really dislike text speak. Like you I can never understand what it says half the time!

tor8181 · 05/08/2018 01:59

same here,i use proper written words everywhere

i also like to talk so my messengers/texts are as long as a conversation some times

im newish on here and the abbreviations people used confused me so much it took me a fe weeks to get what they meant

LinoleumBlownapart · 05/08/2018 02:03

I hate text speak. My teenagers do it, we live abroad too so the little pains do it in two languages, which is even worse because not only do I have decipher the words but half the time I've no idea which language the jumble of letters belong to.

delphguelph · 05/08/2018 02:15

It's a load of rubbish. Speak properly!

I am old school and write in full sentences with punctuation and all that.

I am down with the youth :o and get textspeak, but don't use it.

vampirethriller · 05/08/2018 07:22

I write texts in full sentences and so does everyone I know!

Oysterbabe · 05/08/2018 07:25

I don't see a lot of this. Most people I know write in full sentences. I don't mind the odd BTW or TBH though.

LoniceraJaponica · 05/08/2018 07:29

I hate it. It is lazy. I get why people used to use it before smartphones. But there is no excuse nowadays.

ThisIsntMeHonestGuv · 05/08/2018 07:33

The odd thing about text speak is that while obviously it's more a young people thing, empirical evidence would suggest that the next highest uptake is by their grandparents. Its us lot in the middle that don't have time to figure out all out.

My mother uses text speak, as do many of her friends.

I don't think it will last. It made sense when texts cost 10p a time, but now people mostly use WhatsApp or messenger.

Emotionaleater · 05/08/2018 16:06

I totally agree, when it cost 10/12p to send a text, it made sense to shorten words. Latest few I’ve seen, ‘hu iz dis?’ -at a quick glance you wonder whether it’s english!

My 78 year old mother uses text speak, whilst I still write all words out in full and use proper punctuation. I do use proper shorthand at work, though (Pitman New Era).

Teaformeplz · 05/08/2018 16:50

I also hate this! The odd 'U' instead of 'you' really doesn't upset me, but when they've had to train their autocorrect to allow them to spell words stupidly, I just don't understand it
