To serve these foods to muslim friends

Hi - posting here for traffic but also because I don't want to BU. I invited some new school friends and their parents for a bbq in a couple of weeks and two of the families are muslim and mentioned they only eat halal.
I want to make an effort to make them feel comfortable, and it has also been very interesting learning all about what is halal or haram. Obviously no pork will be served. However, some of the guidance on the internet is not clear, so I wondered if anyone with this diet could help me with these items and whether it would BU to serve them up:

Vinegar - if I served this in eg. a coleslaw, are all types of vinegar fine? (Eg is the vinegar not seen as alcohol anymore?)
Butter - Am I overthinking this? Would you eat butter?
Alcohol - I know you wouldn't drink this, but is it acceptable for others in the group to be drinking a glass of wine?
Halloumi - I can't figure out if this is okay or not.

Also - any tips you might have would be great, especially if there are brands of crisps, bread, butter etc....you might use.

Thank you!

Sikhism's code of conduct says Sikhs are strictly prohibited from eating meat killed in a ritualistic manner.

Yes I know, and I’ve repeatedly defended the right of Sikhs to practice their faith.

The poster I was responding to doesn’t follow any faith.

YeTalkShiteHen

Don’t worry, it’s not you. I suspect the Tommy is strong with certain posters.

abilockhart · 05/08/2018 14:14

The sheer stupidity of some posters on this thread is absolutely mind-boggling Shock

badteacher · 05/08/2018 14:15

Stunning is cruel.
There is no guarantee that the animal won't regain consciousness . Many do . Many are not stunned correctly . There is evidence that stunning is painful and sometimes ineffective.

rainbowsandsmiles · 05/08/2018 14:15

Their right to practice their faith has absolutely no tangible impact on me. If I were to force them not to because of my own beliefs (or lack thereof) it would have a tangible effect on them. One is oppressive, the other is not.

Exactly this. As someone who's not particularly religious, it makes absolutely no difference to me whatsoever whereas it would the other way round.

Yes I have.

JacquesHammer oh fuck aye!

mintui · 05/08/2018 14:16

I meant my point regarding the fact a significant number of animals are not stunned. Very easy to label everyone a bigot/racist.

hearmyvoice · 05/08/2018 14:16

I know a lot of Muslims, am also married to a Muslim man.
None of them would be bothered about anyone else drinking around them, if they would than they wouldnt have accepted your invite. All cheese is fine as is butter, some Muslims won't have parmesan as it contains an enzyme from the animals stomach.
Fish is fine but not shellfish, and everyone I knownhas been fine with veggie food instead of meat.

JacquesHammer · 05/08/2018 14:16

All religions are literally nothing more than collections of arbitrary dogma, with no more independent value than anyone else's opinion. Why on earth are you an atheist if that's not the case?

Because being an atheist doesn’t turn me into an intolerant asshole and I believe in people being able to practice their religions.

I am yet to hear a coherent argument as to how a few words said over a carcass would affect me, whilst for other people it does matter.

badteacher · 05/08/2018 14:18

I am sick of people like you who pander to the minorities views

There's always a racist or two on these threads . I suppose they don't realise how embarrassing they are to themselves .

YeTalkShiteHen · 05/08/2018 14:19

mintui having been moved to do some research into slaughter methods in the UK I’ve actually become vegetarian because there is no kind and properly humane way to kill an animal. But that’s my choice.

I don’t like that animals could be aware of what is happening to them, no. But to pretend that it’s only halal meat which results in this is just not true, stunning is not always effective and some slaughterhouses are dodgy.

Does anyone remember the recent news story about pigs being kicked and punched around a slaughterhouse before being killed? There’s not a hope in hell they were halal!

YeTalkShiteHen · 05/08/2018 14:20

Very easy to label everyone a bigot/racist.

You do realise the posters you’re defending are bigots though?

DiegoMadonna · 05/08/2018 14:21

But in non-halal "farms" and abattoirs, more than 10% of animals die of overcrowding and related diseases within the first few months of their life. Which is probably a slower death than non-stunned slaughter. So if people are that concerned, they should be vegetarians really.

commonarewe · 05/08/2018 14:21

Because being an atheist doesn’t turn me into an intolerant asshole and I believe in people being able to practice their religions.

And what about the right of atheists and secularists not to have religion forced upon our dinner plates? Why do we not have equal rights to make choices that avoid religious practices?

YeTalkShiteHen · 05/08/2018 14:22

One more time and then I absolutely give up.

Could you identify a halal piece of meat from a non halal piece of meat? (Pork aside obviously!)

Does it personally affect you beyond the fact you don’t like their faith?

DiegoMadonna · 05/08/2018 14:23

Oh look derxa, funnily enough animal cruelty isn't limited to muslims! www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/harrowing-undercover-footage-butchers-abattoir-5124981

JacquesHammer · 05/08/2018 14:23

With respect I can’t explain that in any smaller words than I already have done.

YeTalkShiteHen · 05/08/2018 14:24

DiegoMadonna the article I shared was to show that too.

JacquesHammer · 05/08/2018 14:24

Could you identify a halal piece of meat from a non halal piece of meat?

Come on, it will clearly be trying to convert you from your casserole.

DiegoMadonna · 05/08/2018 14:24

And what about the right of atheists and secularists not to have religion forced upon our dinner plates? Why do we not have equal rights to make choices that avoid religious practices?

You do! Nobody has ever said you must eat it! Just that your reasons for not doing so are stupid.

YeTalkShiteHen · 05/08/2018 14:25

mintui · 05/08/2018 14:25

YeTalkShiteHen your entire argument depends on the two wrongs make a right fallacy.
