Choosing carpet based on spider visibility

mumtomaxwell · 04/08/2018 17:33

I have always chosen pale carpets because it’s easier to see spiders (I’m very scared of spiders!) Blush

We have cream carpet in our lounge and with 3 DCs and 2 cats it now looks minging. I’d like a new carpet, DH thinks we need a darker more forgiving colour but I’m scared that I won’t see the spiders easily and I’ll comstantly be checking for the sneaky little bastards to jump out and get me.

What colours are forgiving but still have good visibility?

Agh. Ive had a million of those spiders with the really thin, almost see through legs. Tiny body massive legs.
Fucking everywhere since we started getting these heatwaves.
When is spider shag season btw? Has it not happened? Ive got rid of what seems like 101 spideys recently

Timeisslippingaway · 05/08/2018 00:02

I had cream carpets for 6/7 years they actually depressed me by the end they looked so bloody grubby, 2 kids, black dog (that took a long time to toilet train). Now I have grey/beige carpets, best thing ever! Took a while to get used to them and now I love them.
Spiders won't jump out at you they will run away.

SilageMarner · 05/08/2018 00:06

Buns - we seem to breed those too :( stupid pin bodies (like the head of a big pin) and massive ridiculously horrible long legs for running at me/jumping at me/wrestling me to the ground and biting me all over to a foamy mouthed agonising death.

SilageMarner · 05/08/2018 00:07

Oh and they get horny in September in the UK, I think. Start hanging out on pale surfaces like white walls so that potential disgusting mates can see them 🤢

Movablefeast · 05/08/2018 00:12

I have cream carpets that are a year old and made to be incredibly stain and pet resistant so you could change to a brand like that. I have been thrilled, very, very happy. Easy to get out most stains just with blotting and water.

Also I would second getting your current carpets professionally cleaned, you could be amazed at the results and put off replacing them for longer.

BunsOfAnarchy · 05/08/2018 00:13

Omg @SilageMarner how much hornier will they get?! Theyve had sex fest since April!
Damn you hot weather! I needs me a special horny spider eating cat PRONTO!

SilageMarner · 05/08/2018 00:17

It’s not just the size of the horn - it’s the radius of the blast. Thousands of vile little spider babies just waiting to grow into long legged beasties. Urrrrrrgh!!!

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 05/08/2018 00:21

I am now bitterly regretting my choice of black carpet on the stairs and upstairs hallway. Its been down 4 months. I dont think any amount of pleading or begging for a pale replacement is going to work on dp. Why did i not think of spiders??????

Time40 · 05/08/2018 00:27

Get them professionally cleaned, OP (the carpets, not the spiders ... ) you'll be amazed at the difference. That dry-cleaning system that uses micro sponges is brilliant.

And I'd get some treatment for the spider-phobia.

PeckhamPauline · 05/08/2018 01:12

*If you're that scared of spiders … get yourself some spider poison."

Yes, do that. As long as you agree that anyone who thinks you're ugly can kill you with equal impunity.

Leave the f*ing spiders alone, FFS.

PeckhamPauline · 05/08/2018 01:13

The number of complete fuckwits on this thread is downright depressing.

Gretagumbo · 05/08/2018 03:33

Chill Pauline

mumtomaxwell · 05/08/2018 07:57

I definitely don’t have a phobia... I am only scared of the really big house spiders. Those really spindly ones don’t bother me at all - we’ve got masses of those!

My cats were great at spider control at first but now one is too fat and lazy and the other one goes outside to catch mice!

I’m going to find a decent professional carpet cleaner and see if my lovely cream carpets can be saved.

Actually if I'd started getting spiders (as in more than just the odd one), damn right I'd spray the house to get rid of them, in fact this applies to any creepy crawly that decides to come into my house- flies, fleas and butterflies included.

ImAIdoot · 05/08/2018 10:03

Ive always been a good judge of character and I'm pretty sure from interactions with them, that spiders intend to kill us all and we're living on borrowed time until they have the numbers.

Everyone needs to do their bit before it's too late.

PeckhamPauline · 05/08/2018 10:05

Gretagumbo Smile

Cheshire You are aware that spiders exist by eating "creepy crawlys" as you describe them?
i.e., If there aren't any insects in your house the spiders will not survive there.

PeckhamPauline · 05/08/2018 10:07

ImAldoot Nonsense.
Would you rather have the odd spider that runs away when you switch the light on, or a house/world teeming with flies and maggots?

GladAllOver · 05/08/2018 10:12

Why not deal with the basic problem, instead of constantly dealing with the symptoms?
There are a number of ways of getting rid of a spider phobia, and you have said yours isn't serious, so not difficult to get rid of.

As others have already said, it's better to have spiders doing their job of getting rid of the real harmful pests.

Dodie66 · 05/08/2018 10:18

I’ve got a rust coloured carpet and you can definitely see spiders on it. We had a huge one the other day

ImAIdoot · 05/08/2018 10:22

@PeckamPauline fake news.

Ethylred · 05/08/2018 10:28

You can always tel the housekeeper to hoover the spiders.
Hoover them up that is, not hoover them like you would hoover a pug.

wheezing · 05/08/2018 10:31

Getting your carpet professionally cleaned is BRILLIANT. They come up looking brand new. Had a rug done recently. I’d try that before buying a whole new one OP.

greathat · 05/08/2018 10:43

Does it have to be carpet? Engineered oak is lovely and you could have s nice rug

DarthLipgloss · 05/08/2018 11:07

I rented a house that had cream carpets throughout. I used to have every other Friday off and always ended up either spot cleaning or wet vaccing the bloody things every day off. They stayed looking nice though. Id hire a rug doctor and clean them see what happens.

Bottleup · 05/08/2018 11:30

Another one here saying deal with the phobia. It's life changing. I got help 2 years ago for severe arachnaphobia and haven't looked back. I went berry picking with my son for the first time ever last week - I couldn't do it previously in case a spider ran on me.
