Did a few things with different groups of friends.

  1. Party at mine for extended family
  2. Party at mine with neighbours
  3. Dinner out with Uni girls
  4. Posh afternoon tea with best mates
Autumnchill · 04/08/2018 06:01

In Vegas with friends. Flew into the Grand Canyon, had champagne breakfast, bit of shopping, meal at Ramsey's and then comedy show. Was fantastic.

For my husbands, he wanted to see a cricket match, luckily England had a match at Trent Bridge so tickets to that, nice restaurant and cocktails in the evening.

BunnyCarr · 04/08/2018 06:07

Went to Moscow. T'was great.

LaPufalina · 04/08/2018 06:33

I did a lovely Airbnb city break with my three friends who are also turning 40 soon, I'm not until next year but I will still probably be breastfeeding a 7 month old by then so going to be a low-key one for me!
My DH is 30 next year and have planned a year of fun things for him...
so far I've booked
-Hamilton tickets for him and his best friend (also 30 the month before so two birds one stone!),
-bill bailey tickets
-les Mis tickets for him and his mum
And now I need to think of some cheaper ones (maybe a cookery or carpentry course, beer festival tickets, a 10k entry etc) as I'm on mat leave and already regretting starting this project, financially Grin

Like someone upthread, crying on the sofa with 10wk old reflux suffering twins covered in milk.

Stopfeckinexaggerating · 04/08/2018 06:50

Husband got me a 2001 Range Rover and then a puppy from Battersea. Best presents ever x

We went to Spain for a fortnight for mine, to a friend's villa. DP organised it all. My mum and step dad came too and my dad and step mum came for 6 days in the middle and stayed in a nearby hotel. My parents had been pretty much estranged for about 30 years apart from having to see each other at my sister's wedding so it was amazing for everyone to put the past aside and come together for my 40th. It was truly unforgettable and a very special time for me to look back on. For me, some healing took place which is the best present I could ever ask for. It was a massive risk and I will never forget DP doing that for me.

Kids still quite young, had a daytime BBQ and party with local friends, and an extended-family lunch out another day (everyone paid their own). Had 2 lovely days.

For my 50th I rented a big house in Tuscany with a pool and had mother/sister/brother and their kids to stay (they paid their own airfare and we shared the cooking and food costs). BUT I organised it myself - wouldn't have expected DP to organise it for me. Had a lovely fortnight.

Surprise champagne breakfast at a country inn and champagne afternoon tea at a stately home followed by a wonderful garden party with family and friends the next day. We worked around my LO’s naps. I had a great time celebrating :-)

chocolatespiders · 04/08/2018 07:14

Went to Paris for four amazing days. Can't wait to go back there one day.

Groovee · 04/08/2018 07:16

My birthday is the week before Christmas. Dd got me elf tickets and a night next to the Lowry in Manchester. We then moved to the Trafford centre and had a few days there. It was great. Well apart from a family member telling everyone I was wrong and it wasn't my 40th!

Minniemountain · 04/08/2018 07:22

I'm 40 in November. DH and I are going to Rome for 4 days. I've booked the actual day off work and plan on either having a long walk or going to a spa, depending on weather.
DH is 40 next summer. He wants to go glacier skiing in Saas Fee.

ChipsAndKetchup · 04/08/2018 07:30

I took my DH to Rome for his 40th and arranged for his mate and his GF to fly out for 2 nights. My DH hates surprises so on reflection wasn't the best plan.

For mine he took me to the Marcus Wareing restaurant and a stay in a nearby hotel. It was brilliant, thoroughly recommend it.

kettleonplease · 04/08/2018 07:33

I just took my DH away for his 40th...we had 3 days in a European city with friends turning up, and then 4 days in the mountains. Absolutely everything was a surprise, including the friends arriving! It was hard work organising it all in secret but I think he was happy :)

CountFosco · 04/08/2018 07:41

We had a 3 year old and an 18 month old and struggled to get a babysitter (no family nearby) and only got one a few days before so we just had a meal out (admittedly at a very nice restaurant). Next night out was probably DH's 40th 6 months later. For my 30th we were childfree and had a weekend away in a nice hotel. At 50 we'll still have childcare to worry about (we'll have an 8 year old as well as the older 2) so all big birthday plans are focussed on 60!

My friend's DH organised a surprise party for her and we were all asked to take some food. They had a band playing and it was a fab night and really child friendly since we all had small children.

Treacletoots · 04/08/2018 07:43

DH whisked me off to Paris. We had an amazing long weekend and loved every minute of it!

Camsie30 · 04/08/2018 07:50

I went to NYC with three friends for a long weekend and amongst other things we saw Bette Midler in Hello Dolly on Broadway. My parents very kindly looked after my daughter. It was the best weekend and exactly how I wanted to spend my big birthday!

FishingIsNotASport · 04/08/2018 07:54

Party at a pub in our village for friends and family, a weekend in a grand hotel on the coast for us 4 and a hot air balloon trip over Herefordshire and the Malverns.

vivasunshine · 04/08/2018 08:03

Went for a family meal, I was 8 months pregnant Grin

Meltingwax · 04/08/2018 08:14

I went to Iceland for a long weekend with DP and the DCs. Went to the Blue Lagoon and had dinner at the restaurant there which was fab. The next day we did the Golden Circle tour. We stayed here: rrhotel.is/

CatsRule · 04/08/2018 08:20

Dh and I both turned 40 in the same year, a few months apart. Actual days weren't exciting but spent together and we gave small normal presents but we did book a nice holiday to celebrate jointly even though it wasn't on either of our actual birthday dates. He had to go to work on his and I had a dentist appointment 🙄🙄 holiday was good though.

beela · 04/08/2018 08:32

Mine is coming up later this year. It falls in October half term, so planning a few days away with DH and DC.

I need an afternoon tea somewhere along the way... either going out for one, or hosting one at home. Or both.

A colleague turns 40 a few weeks later so will do a joint night out with work people.

And maybe just invite all my mates to the pub one evening for a few drinks.

37KAT · 04/08/2018 08:39

Spa day and afternoon tea with fiends whist DC at school. Meal out with DC, DH & parents in the evening. Flew to Barcelona the next day for a 3 night city break with no DC! Felt a bit guilty not taking them but rationalised that we do loads of stuff with them & we'd had a family holiday so made the most of it!

flumpybear · 04/08/2018 08:42

I was heavily pregnant! So went out for a fancy lunch at the best restaurant in town and had a glass of 5% bubbly wine - which I couldn't finish lol! Early night .... sleeping!

Hoping 50th will be a bit more exciting Wink few years to wait though!

Shednik · 04/08/2018 09:05

DH - surprise night away child free on the hotel where we had our wedding reception.
Then his sister and partner turned up for the weekend as a surprise. We did walks and pubs.

Followed by a week away with ds.

My fortieth next year and plan to take dc for their first holiday abroad.

For my thirtieth dh arranged a week away with my best friend and her dh. Friend has since died so I'm so glad we did it. Even though we both had sleepless babies and her dh got on everyone's nerves.
