Pseudomonas infection. Freaking out!

Had a really nasty ear infection that required a trip to walk in centre and a&e last week. My Dr just called me personally to check on me and say the results of my swab had come back and it was pseudomonas and I hadn't been treated for it (3 lots of antibiotics later I might add!)
She said as long as i was feeling better we could wait and see how I go but to come in for treatment if any pain at all reoccurs.
Just googled pseudomonas (I know!) And have completely freaked myself out. Aibu to want to just be treated Blush I know we shouldn't over use anti b's but apparently Ireland screen for colonisations in healthy people and treat without symptoms so it must be pretty serious.

OP, try not to panic (I know, I know...) My friend has had pseudomonas in her lungs for over 16 years - we call it her pet Smile
Every time she sees a new doctor and has tests, she gets a panicked phonecall - and every time she refers them to her records from the hospital where she's been treated for almost 20 years, and they go, 'Ah, right..'
She obviously has long-term health conditions, but the pseudamonas hasn't made any difference to these - so it's not necessary to panic completely. Hope that you feel much better soon Flowers

Thank you seamstress I have googled the hevk out of it and it seems quite common amongst those with respiratory conditions or those with compromised immune systems. I hope your friend is well.
I have OCD and health anxiety and this has well and truly freaked me out. I have been relatively sane lately too Grin

I’ve had this. You need Ciprofloxacin. Having had 3 lots of antibiotics already, you have spent a fair amount of time ill and in pain. Go and get it cleared up; it’s a damaging microbe.

LifesTooShortForMatchingSocks · 03/08/2018 20:40

The infection itself seems to have cleared up. I'd have been none the wiser if gp hadn't called today. I go away on holiday in the morning and it was the last thing I needed to hear going away! She said it's possible that the pseudomonas is just a colonisation?

My dgd has these on a regular basis but she has cystic fibrosis so she usually ends up hospitalised and on iv antibiotics to get rid as a pp said they are more serious in already respiratory compromised patients. So presuming you haven't got any such conditions try not to worry too much, my dgd has always bounced back from them with good treatment and management without losing any of her baseline lung capacity which is around 88 to early 90s %
I think they hold back on the antibiotics as the bugs do get resistant to them and l know with my dgd they alternate between a few different ones.

LifesTooShortForMatchingSocks · 03/08/2018 20:44

Thanks bahhhhumbug I've never even heard of it until today, seem relatively common then. Hope your dgd is well.

My dd1 had it in her eyes from birth and for months. Nothing would shift it until she ended up on different antibiotics for something else and that cleared it. The doctors never gave the impression they were particularly worried about it.

LifesTooShortForMatchingSocks · 03/08/2018 20:51

Ah your poor dd rallytog. Comforting to hear it wasn't of too much concern thank you. My gp called me out of hours in her own time so I think that's what freaked me out most!

It’s fairly common amongst patients with airway or lung conditions.

Are you a swimmer? Or a hot tub aficionado?

sproutsandparsnips · 03/08/2018 21:02

I have had it in my ear a couple of times. Gentamicin/ciprofloxacin ear drops sorted it. It's a common pathogen in ear infections and I'm a swimmer and wear earplugs to sleep. Don't worry you will be fine.

LifesTooShortForMatchingSocks · 03/08/2018 21:35

Not a swimmer or a hot tub user. Not actually sure how I caught it to be honest. Maybe I should ask go to treat it then or should I just watch and wait and see how it goes?

She is very well considering thank you lifestoosbort is doing very well and recently turned 18.
She has also been warned about swimming pools etc as this set of bugs loves these environments apparently. Ironically swimming is brilliant for strengthening lung capacity so it's bit of a catch 22 so the cf kids are better doing trampolining, dancing even singing for lung exercises.
