Apologies for posting here for traffic but I really want to become less chubby (need to lose about 1.5 stones). I’m trying to reduce the amount of carbs I’m eating but I’m totally confused about what exercise and how much I should be doing to lose weight. I’ve noticed that, particularly on LCHF threads, people often say exercise is counterproductive to losing weight Confused. I’ve also read that weight lifting is the best exercise for toning up but does this include kettlebells as I’ve done this before and put my back out! Blush Ive also recently tried running (hurt my knees) and step aerobics (ditto). Would Body Pump help do you think because I’ve got a bar bell!! Sorry for all the questions but I’ve just turned 40 (became anaemic and hypothyroid) and need to tackle my weight gain before it’s too late! Thanks for reading this far! Blush

Thank you will see what classes there are near me first I think
Just need to target the problem areas

Muscle weighs more than fat

Jesus actual Christ. NO IT DOESN'T. 1lb of muscle weighs exactly the same as 1lb of fat.

Muscle tissue is, however, denser than fat, so a lean, toned person may weigh just the same as a person who carries more body fat while appearing to have less 'mass'.

LittleMissPlump · 03/08/2018 19:07

Balls! Just typed a long message thanking everyone individually but lost it!! But thanks to you all on this thread I have taken some big steps today... I have followed a short hiit exercise routine on YouTube. I felt great afterwards! Grin I’ve emailed a nutritionist to see if she can help me overhaul my eating. I’ve got a history of disordered eating so I think I need some help to steer me in the healthy rather than restrictive direction. I’ve also signed up to a 7 day free pass of Les Mills online! Bluebug45 you asked what I enjoy doing and that really got me thinking! I’ve realised I’ve been annoyed at myself for being good at running. A lot of my friends run and are competitive - doing 10k and half marathons etc. I think I’ve been putting pressure on myself to ‘fit in’ despite my increasingly sore knees! Thanks again all Flowers

Sorry I meant ‘I’m annoyed because I’m not good at running!’ Preview fail!

Goodness thistle are you always so pedantic? It's not hard to see that the person you quoted meant exactly what you're saying.

Running & Pilates is the logical way forward for those who are not fitness savvy but want to loose weight and look better, IMO. Try to find a class - I pay £100/mo for unlimited Pilates and do exactly the same exercises with my instructor's supervision that I see all the personal trainers doing with their clients at the dog park every morning.

AlexanderHamilton · 03/08/2018 20:22

Of course 1lb of muscle weighs the same as 1lb offset 1lb is 1lb is 1lb

Surely any sane person could see I meant the same amount as is mass/size of muscle weighs more than fat.

So if you have 1cm square of fat it weighs less than 1cm square of muscle.

ThistleAmore · 03/08/2018 20:32

@AlexanderHamilton, you clearly understand the difference, so why did you say muscle weighs more than fat, as per your original comment?

If you say 'x = x' then any sane person will assume you mean x, rather than y.

HeresMe · 03/08/2018 20:33

It's hardly pedantic there is actually people who believe that, and why not say it's smaller mass instead?

If you wanna lose weight you need to do a bit of cardio, and HIIT is good as a lot of time it mixes it up.

ThistleAmore · 03/08/2018 20:38

@RoadtoRivendell

Goodness thistle are you always so pedantic?

So pointing out that a thing is an actual thing is pedantry now? Jeebus, no wonder we're facing an epidemic of 'fake news'.

SPOILER ALERT: the earth is kind of oval-shaped, the moon is real, vaccinations don't cause autism.

AlexanderHamilton · 03/08/2018 21:59

I really cannot be bothered. Some posters on here are so up themselves.

ThistleAmore · 03/08/2018 22:09

@AlexanderHamilton

Yes, it's a terrible bother when people call you out on your nonsense, isn't it? So 'up themselves'.

Have the good grace to admit when you're in the wrong.

AlexanderHamilton · 03/08/2018 22:12

I’m not wrong.

AlexanderHamilton · 03/08/2018 22:14

I do however have a full time job(was trying to post friendly advice in my lunch break, a husband with a potential brain tumour & two teens who need me more than anyone on this site so when I try to ge nice to someone & it gets thrown back in my face (who the hell talks about mass anyway I did explain body fat percentage )

SlightAggrandising · 03/08/2018 22:15

thistle don't be a dick. Your post was unnecessarily terse. Clarify by all means, no need to be rude.

Arkengarthdale · 03/08/2018 22:19

HIIT is an excellent start. Short and sweet. When I did my Army basic training a hundred years ago that's basically how they got us slobby civvies fit in a few weeks. Short intense bursts of effort.

Dancing is fabulous too! Try Ceroc or Lindy hop or Swing Train- you don't realise you're exercising cos you're having so much fun

MrsJBaptiste · 03/08/2018 22:42

However if you low carb you can't eat even a bit of processed sugar or it throws you out of the weight loss stage. So if you're one of these people who sees sugary stuff like biscuits and cake as a 'treat' it won't work well for you

This wasn't the case for me. When I first started low carbing, I was very strict but not strict enough to not have 1 biscuit in the evenings as a treat. I'd also have the odd treat at the weekends (plus wine) and the weight literally fell off. I didn't have a lot of weight to lose though, maybe that makes a difference?

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 03/08/2018 22:49

Ye gawds. So boring. This always happens. Someone comes on to helpfully explain about the density difference between muscle and fat, and someone else complains that they left some words out.

When anyone says muscle weighs more than fat, surely it's obvious that what they mean is a big glob of muscle would weigh more than a glob of fat the same size.

In other news, a basket of soaking wet clothes weighs more than a basket of dry clothes. Again, implicit that I mean the same clothes or a basket of equivalent clothes, and that I'm not claiming that a small wet hanky will automatically weigh more than a basket of dry motorcycle leathers.

Seriousquestion09 · 03/08/2018 22:50

It’s taken me 5 years to get that “super toned” Misty Copeland type look from weight training and I believe it’s due to an intense combination of HITT with a very good trainer ( not all personal trainers are that good), cardio and most importantly a very good amount of protein.

I’d also like to sadly say that a of it is genetics too. I’ve looked at people who I train with and not many have achieved that “look” and they hardcore and done teain more than me. I really is a combination of food, exercise and genetics!

I would say start slow and have realistic expectations. When I say 5 years I mean though I toned up much sooner it’s the maintenance that counts plus age is a factor (I’m 34).

phlebasconsidered · 03/08/2018 23:06

If you are hypothyroid then nothing on earth will make a plan work until your thyroid is sorted. I know, because i'm the same.

Get your tsh below 0.5, and accept that you'll need to eat less and exercise more than non thyroid people.

I have to eat less than 1500 calories and run 30km a week to keep slightly overweight but fit with this condition. It sucks.

Neverender · 03/08/2018 23:13

Am doing a combo of weights, cardio and yoga and have done for about 6wks. I feel soooo much better. Weights and cardio in the gym (work gym and someone talked me through what to do once and now I do it over and over), and one yoga class a week (am increasing to 2 as work are offering it). I feel much stronger and leaner.

Neverender · 03/08/2018 23:14

To add, also eating what I want, but when you e for up at 6am to work out, you don't really want crisps!

ImAIdoot · 03/08/2018 23:18

NO IT DOESN'T. 1lb of muscle weighs exactly the same as 1lb of fat.

Lol what the hell are you trying to express here, 1lb of lead weighs the same as 1lb of feathers, it has no bearing on which is heavier.

Normally when people say one material is heavier than another they mean by volume, and human muscle mass is heavier by volume than body fat.

RoadToRivendell · 04/08/2018 10:48

n other news, a basket of soaking wet clothes weighs more than a basket of dry clothes.

Snort.

I love (and hate) HIIT - I do a combo Pilates class and it's brutally effective. You'll get your heart rate up (there is a lot of jumping involved which is so much harder than regular cardio) - without resting it's straight into weights, making it much more effective.
