To leave baby sleeping in pram in the garden?

Had an argument with hubby today about whether or not it’s safe to leave baby sleeping in her pram in the back garden while I popped in and out the house doing laundry and housework. I was checking on her every few minutes but his opinion is she shouldn’t be out of sight even for a minute. I tried to ask him how he thinks he would get any housework done without leaving baby occasionally but that didn’t go down well 🤔 What do others think??

Of course there's no problem. My baby sleeps upstairs in her cot so is out of sight.

As long as you're checking on her/within listening distance.

Fresh air is good for them too!

I do this. Managed to get a load of laundry done, tea drank, lunch made and so on today. I can't see the problem. If your garden is secure and you are checking regularly then where's the actual issue?

TheConstantMoaner · 02/08/2018 22:56

How safe is your garden ? I don’t think you can monitor babies every minute it’s just not realistic. So as long as you’re checking on them frequently and they’re in a safe place. It’s fine.

Josieannathe2nd · 02/08/2018 22:56

I’d suggest you bring them in when it goes dark... I have an old house with thick walls so I would sometimes plug a baby monitor in a nearby window to ensure I would hear them when they woke. But popping to see them regularly would be fine. Other countries do it in winter too..

I wouldn't without a net over. There's a lot of wasps/bees/midgies around at the moment

I used to leave DS in my mums garden sleeping all the time! She insisted on it. He generally slept better and longer too. The same for my 3 nieces. They were all left in the garden.

They’re now 10, 8 and 4 and DS is 6

Didn’t harm any of them!

fieldofdaisies · 02/08/2018 23:09

Garden is quite small and completely enclosed so very safe

Yes of course that's fine, as long as your garden is safe.

Fresh air is good for babies.

We leave our baby in the pram in the garden, with a monitor by the pushchair or regularly checking. I think I read somewhere that in some Arctic countries they wrap baby up and leave them out in the freezing cold to sleep!

thejeangenie36 · 02/08/2018 23:20

Heres the link to the story referred to in my previous post - www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-21537988. Putting baby out in the garden here in blighty somewhat pales in comparison.

ParkheadParadise · 02/08/2018 23:20

My dd's slept in the garden summer and winter. They would sleep for hours outside. Never did them any harm

Singlenotsingle · 02/08/2018 23:22

You wouldn't want the baby to get darked on, would you Josie?

GoldenHoops · 02/08/2018 23:26

Thinking back to an earlier thread...

Have you checked for bears, foxes, Eagles, bobcats, zombies, masked intruders, non-masked intruders, fog, owls, runaway Segways and coyotes?

glintandglide · 02/08/2018 23:30

No problem Safety wise and I’m usually a big fan of garden napping but it was a bit hot today to leave them out wasn’t it?

Stupomax · 02/08/2018 23:30

Also giant mosquitos, ticks, airborne plague and sudden locust swarms?

Absofrigginlootly · 02/08/2018 23:39

Depends on the age of the baby.

If under 6 months the research shows that the risk of sids is halved if baby sleeps in same room as parents for day and nighttime sleeps

MrSpock · 02/08/2018 23:39

It’s fine.

defineme · 02/08/2018 23:43

I always did it with my 3, I did use a net in summer because of wasps etc.

user1468263541 · 02/08/2018 23:46

It's fine. Did it with both of mine, even in autumn/winter with them all wrapped up warm. They slept really well outside. Always had a net over the pram though. They're 10 and 8 now and I wish I could stick them outside and make them nap for hours on end.

NastyCats · 02/08/2018 23:48

I wouldn't think there was a problem usually but I wouldn't here because we have several local foxes who are messing around the garden even in broad daylight at the moment (and we have caught them in the house). They don't just kill for food but fun - I have seen them playing tug of war with a squirrel and tossing a rat about like a chew-toy. If you are fox-free then it sounds peaceful and healthy for the baby.

garethsouthgatesmrs · 02/08/2018 23:58

You cant be with your baby 24/7 but if very small there is a small risk relating to cats /foxes so have a net over baby. I never thought of wasp stings but a pp is correct this is also a risk.

agree with pp about reducing risk of SIDS by being in room with baby with a fairly newborn I would prefer them inside and in the same room as me but if you are nipping in and out I think that''s not unreasonable with an older baby. I left my DD (10months) outside the other day for a nap. I could see her from living room but her siblings were being noisy and it was more peaceful for her there (bloody summer holidays!)

PickAChew · 03/08/2018 00:01

The biggest problem in my garden would be wasps. And greedy woodpigeons.
