Is this a terrible present?

I'm really strapped for cash. It's a family member's anniversary on Sunday. They always get me amazing presents for birthdays etc so I can't get them nothing. I was thinking of doing a hamper in a canvas bag. Most of the things are unused things I have in my cupboards: prosecco, sparkling water, sweets, chocolates, pasta etc. I'll then spend around £5-10 adding to it e.g. fancy hand wash, a magazine each etc.
Is this a terrible gift or can I get away with it? I already have a card.

I'd be delighted to receive that - anything you've put together yourself shows thought and care. Just check everything is in date though, if you've had it a while Grin

LadyB49 · 02/08/2018 22:30

The idea is fine but don't think I'd put in basic pasta.

TheConstantMoaner · 02/08/2018 22:32

I would love this.

Barbaro · 02/08/2018 22:32

I've given hampers as presents before and they are always well received. It's difficult to buy for older people usually as they tend to have what they want. I'm sure they'll love it and understand you can't afford much. Maybe wouldn't add the pasta though, it's more for treats than proper food.

Margueritte · 02/08/2018 22:32

It sounds lovely and thoughtful. Leave out anything too basic (standard pasta, sparkling water)- less might be more!

Knittedfairies · 02/08/2018 22:33

It’s a bit of an odd mix, to be honest; from your list I’d put in the prosseco, the chocolates, fancy hand wash and magazine. Otherwise it just looks as if you’ve gone through your cupboards and chucked in anything still in date.

Floralnomad · 02/08/2018 22:33

The idea is fine but do people really expect presents for their anniversary from anyone other than their partner .

Singlenotsingle · 02/08/2018 22:33

Sounds good to me! Usually I find that a hamper-type present can cost more than a standard present but if you've àlready got some stuff, you might be ok

TokyoSushi · 02/08/2018 22:34

Lovely, just put in the 'best' stuff and it'll be a great gift!

formerbabe · 02/08/2018 22:35

Sounds nice...but I'd probably just give the prosecco and spend the tenner on a nice bunch of flowers.

OraangeSoda · 02/08/2018 22:35

Do you mean a wedding anniversary? I didn’t realise people gave gifts for other people’s anniversaries.

Emma765 · 02/08/2018 22:35

TK Maxx have some unusual posh food and coffee for decent prices 😁

pinkdelight · 02/08/2018 22:35

Is it a big anniversary? I wouldn't get anything otherwise. Not sure about the magazine, pasta and water. Could you not use the £5-10 to make them a cake or some cupcakes or homemade chocs (simple dipped fruit style)?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 02/08/2018 22:36

V nice idea but wouldn’t the prosecco and chocs in a gift bag suffice, don’t see the need to give away the larder

pinkdelight · 02/08/2018 22:36

Or this as pp says is plenty for an anniversary- " I'd probably just give the prosecco and spend the tenner on a nice bunch of flowers."

Crunchymum · 02/08/2018 22:40

Pasta and sparkling water are not gifts.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 02/08/2018 22:42

Anniversary presents aren’t really a thing, are they?

TigerDroveAgain · 02/08/2018 22:42

Don’t give other petthings for their anniversaries Confused

TigerDroveAgain · 02/08/2018 22:43

Other people things

speakout · 02/08/2018 22:44

The prosecco and card is enough.

kayakingmum · 02/08/2018 22:44

I think that's a lovely idea.

Mammyloveswine · 02/08/2018 22:46

I wouldn't give sparkling water or pasta... but prosseco and chocs will be lovely.

namechange123779 · 02/08/2018 22:46

A thoughtful gift like that would mean a lot to me! Way better than some glasses we'd be too frightened to use xx

kayakingmum · 02/08/2018 22:47

On reflection maybe miss out the pasta and water.

IceCreamFace · 02/08/2018 22:47

I agree with PP you should try to have some kind of theme - so you could go all fancy night in: prosecco, chocolates, fancy hand wash or bath stuff, magazine etc but not the pasta (I'm assuming it's posh past) unless you were going to do full on Italian theme and have an entire meal.
