To ask the plasterers to clear up?

We’ve had plasterers in this week and they’ve created an unholy mess: dumping dirty water over my flowerbeds (turning my plants white), tracking plaster through the house and all over the patio, leaving splashes on walls/windows/skirting/sockets. It’s the last day today today, can I insist that they fix all this before leaving? They covered the carpets upstairs but not right up to the edges, and my tiled floors downstairs are absolutely caked including the bathroom. They were NOT cheap, we’re happy with the actual job but not the mess. Is it expected that they’d clear up after themselves?

YANBU!

nomilknosugarplease · 02/08/2018 13:18

YANBU - DP was a plasterer for quite a while and he was always so so clean in other people’s houses and made sure he didn’t leave any rubbish at all

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 02/08/2018 13:19

Of course you’re not! Don’t pay until the job is finished to your satisfaction, and part of this is any disturbance to the rest of your house.
Why the hell should you put on your pinny and clean their mess??

PlateOfBiscuits · 02/08/2018 13:21

YANBU.

Of all the tradespeople I’ve had here, every single one has been neat and tidied up after themselves... except the plasterers.

When I pointed out a plaster covered window as they were about to leave one day they said “get that while it’s wet, a damp cloth will do.” To me! I very pointedly fetched him a damp cloth.

In all my home renovations over the years, the plasterers are the worse tradesmen. The dirtiest and always leave a mess.

Worst example - I had painstaking sanded and varnished a whole house of original Victorian floorboards. There was a problem with the plastering and it had to be redone. I explained to the plasterer that the floorboards had been done and they needed to be covered as I didn’t want them damaged. When I can back later that day he had just mixed the plaster in the floorboards if each room.

Going blastic is an understatement!

Thank you. I’ll put my brave pants on and insist they clean up before leaving. Luckily I don’t need to pay before they leave so I can go round and double-check anything that I need to.

We had this. I couldn't believe the mess. Worst of all was they kept going into the back garden to smoke ugh tracked plaster all over my decking and grass and left their cigarette butts everywhere! Worse still they were annoyed when I asked them to clean up!

Nikephorus · 02/08/2018 14:27

You can ask/tell them but if you do I bet they'll do an even worse job than they'd do unprompted. I'd clean up myself and knock a bit off the bill Grin

Imsorrylhaventaclue · 02/08/2018 16:38

So they came round, said they were done and I asked them to clean up. They sloshed some water around then left. Their boss is coming later to pick up the rubbish so I’ll have words.

On the last day of our plastering, our plasterer decided to track muck through the kitchen to get to the conservatory to let the cats out 'because he thought they looked hot'. It was January. We had the heating on for them, but no way was it hot in there!

He'd been desperately trying to get his hands on them for a cuddle for days.

Sweet and funny really, but I did swear under my breath at the extra mess he made just to play with the kitties Grin

Nearlyhaveahouse · 02/08/2018 16:52

Def nbu. Mine have been fab, cleaned it up as good as I wouldvd and even took extra bits to the tip for me. I was quite surprised tbh

Imsorrylhaventaclue · 03/08/2018 08:53

10% off the bill Grin thanks for the encouragement! Interesting to hear there’s such a variation in tradesmen’s approaches - it’s definitely something I’ll ask in the future.

Our plasterers on our recent kitchen extension were very tidy. Clearly unusual!

TheViceOfReason · 03/08/2018 10:24

The first plasterer i had in made a terrible mess - managed to ruin the laminate in the hall as so much plaster ended up on the floor. Great job on the walls.... but. He also used the adjoining bathroom as a water collection point instead of using the hose, so it was liberally coated in plaster too - luckily it is full tiled so just took a lot of scrubbing to clean up.

Most recently i used a guy that does plastering AND painting. That worked really well as he had to tidy up properly to paint! I did have all the flooring up too though - no way would i plaster with a decent floor down.
