to wonder why she does this

Ok so I know nobody owns baby names but I find this odd as do my close friends.

When I was pregnant 5 years ago I’d picked out a girl’s name and a boy’s name. I was always pretty open about the names with friends and family. When my DS was born we used the name we’d picked and thought we’d use the girl’s name if we ever had a daughter.

A few months later my friend had her dd and named her this name. I wasn’t really all that bothered. Thought it a bit strange because she’d asked when DS was born if we still liked the girl’s name and I’d said yes. Just one of those things I suppose.

Anyway I’ve since had a second DS but This time around my name choice was maybe a bit more unusual for a girl because i have a background in classical languages so had chosen something to reflect that.

At meal not long after my second DS was born I mentioned the girl’s name and now this friend has used the name for her daughter.

Is this strange? I am not annoyed because I don’t own the names and won’t be having any more children but surely it’s a bit odd?

Once - maybe not (though I would think it weird), twice - definitely odd and stalkerish!

Madeline18 · 02/08/2018 10:07

Sometimes I think it depends on the name, lots of people love Amelia so it wouldn’t be odd that you have friends with children of the same name but not that many pick Antigone. It is weird she’s done it twice.

Hidillyho · 02/08/2018 10:07

I’m not sure it’s odd (although maybe using both your chosen names is a bit weird)
Sometimes you come across names you never would have thought of and fall in love with them. There are a couple of names that I have heard since having my DC and they would definitely have made the maybe list for current DC had I of heard them before. They will probably be on my list if I have another.
I wouldn’t use a name a friend liked though unless they were done with having children

It is a bit odd. It could have been that she just likes the names you suggested. If she respects your judgement it may be that subconsciously when you suggest a name she automatically likes it IYSWIM. Still if I were her I'd definitely mention it to you. e.g. "it's so weird but I actually love that name you'd thought about so think we'll be using it".

Bombardier25966 · 02/08/2018 10:11

You don't own the name. If she's heard it - from you or someone else - and decided she likes it, why shouldn't she use it?

I don't get this name exclusivity.

Plughole3 · 02/08/2018 10:13

Well let’s hope she goes for number 3 & you should suggest a name you would never actually choose & see what she does 😁

GuntyMcGee · 02/08/2018 10:17

On the one hand it could be seen as rather odd, especially as she's done it twice; but on the other, it could well be coincidental that name 1 was something she'd already liked and that the more unusual name is one she hadn't heard of before but fell in love with it.

The one thing that really gets me is that despite the numerous 'someone stole my name' threads on here, people STILL discuss baby names. Just stop doing it, then people can't 'steal' them.

hellsbellsmelons · 02/08/2018 10:19

Very odd indeed.
Take is a compliment though.
You obviously have good taste in names of DC.

caseoftheexfiles · 02/08/2018 11:55

she has form for this kind of thing. Like buying the same clothes etc. I just find it odd that she would do it twice and with a name that is pretty unusual and, for those who know me, relates to my background area of study and, to a certain extent, the job i do.

Obviously I don’t own the name but I just think it shows a lack of imagination that she’s picked two names that I had planned to use.

I agree it's odd. Nobody owns a name, of course, but I'd go so far as to say it's a teeny tiny bit mean to use a name that you know your close friend has her heart set on. Especially twice lol.
