Does anyone do LARP?

I've got a couple of physical restrictions atm but I really really fancy trying LARP.

mademybed123 · 02/08/2018 11:27

What's LARP?

Live Action Roleplaying - I used to do it about 30 years ago where we wore rubber elf ears and thumped each other with rubber swords in the woods :)

Nowadays I do online 'tabletop' gaming using Fantasy Grounds and Discord. All good fun!

RayRayBidet · 02/08/2018 11:32

@mademybed123
How do you get involved? I'm not on twitter so don't really know how it works.

TheQueef · 02/08/2018 11:32

Live action MmB dressing up and playing out for grown ups Grin

A friend of mine used to be very involved with a with a very dedicated LARP "clan" as they called themselves. It was fascinating to me, even though I've never taken part myself. Their games were always ages in planning, and usually something history themed, and would sometimes take place is historic sites, almost like re-enactment, without the sticking to historical storylines part. They were very into making authentic costumes and safe replica weapons, and friend always had lots of photographs. She developed great seamstress skills!

This sounds like an incredible amount of fun! How do I start? Where do I find people on Twitter that also do this?

PrincessOnTheInternet · 02/08/2018 19:10

I do this, and have been for seven or so years - I love it, I find it such good escapism and love my characters too. I’ve made friends through it, mostly women!

Igorina · 02/08/2018 19:15

I used to do this on MSN chatrooms yeeeeaaars ago.

Then they all got shut down and everyone disappeared.

ProfessorMoody · 02/08/2018 19:17

I play D&D in real life but how do I do the Twitter RP please?

WomanOfTime · 02/08/2018 19:20

YANBU. I do this too! Not on Twitter, though - I'm much too wordy to be able to RP within the Twitter character limit. It's all about worldbuilding and character development for me and I don't do the smutty stuff, although I have friends who do. It's a fun hobby and I have a few characters who I've been writing for many years and that I'm rather attached to. Some of it is like collaborative fanfic. I also love having characters from completely different settings meet each other.

AynRandTheObjectivist · 02/08/2018 19:30

How does this work on Twitter? I guess it can't be paragraphed RP?

Writersblock2 · 02/08/2018 19:49

HP was my main fandom. Sigh. I miss it.

Batmanwearspants · 02/08/2018 19:56

Yes I do this. Not on twitter though but on message boards. I can’t imagine you can write much on twitter, but I’ve been doing this for years (like 10ish) using forums. Usually they’re set in different cities and stuff.

PrincessOnTheInternet · 02/08/2018 20:41

I’ve used message boards, forums and I text one person back and forth and we RP. I’ve seen people rp on twitter but I find the character limit very... well, limiting.

mademybed123 · 02/08/2018 21:06

So, you decide a character and name tovuse and create a twitter account with that name, image. Write profile to state who your character is etc, best idea is to look for examples of other RP accounts. Decide if you be lewd or non-lewd, etc

Follow other accounts in your fandom, and...well, i was lucky my character had a few people approach me and start talking. Be friendly, chat.

Word limit - can be a challenge. But also good that you have to clarify your thoughts, and you can link tweets.

No word limits on DMs, and I RP with one person only on there, other wise story lines on twitter time line.

Anything smutty tends to be on direct messages, for sake of privacy and not annoying people who may follow you but don't want to see it.

I don't understand how it can work in the Twitter format. You get no space to say anything because of the character limit, people will be jumping into your RP at any point, the threading system for replies and retweets won't make any sense from an RP perspective.

The traditional online RP format is some sort of chat medium, possibly with avatars but not necessarily. You can write anything from a line to a para. It is all in the same single text channel (you can take private or secret RP to private messaging) so it is very linear and easy to follow.

I honestly don't understand how it would work on Twitter. The entire medium seems wrong for it.

AynRandTheObjectivist · 02/08/2018 21:27

OP, could you perhaps IM me a screenshot of some Twitter rp in action? I'm sitting here trying to figure out how you could do traditional online rp on Twitter without it all being a complete hot mess and I just can't understand it. Twitter just isn't designed for that sort of thing. It originated in chat rooms.

mademybed123 · 02/08/2018 21:31

It works, people don't tend to jump in, it's considered bad manners.

I do another RP project as well, and twitter RP is refreshing in that i don't need to read paragraphs about what someones character is wearing.

As i said, you can use Direct messages instead or as well, with no word limits.

Not mine, but an example of someone using muliple tweets to reply.

He's replying to different people in each tweet....would drive me bonkers trying to follow that. Obviously it works for a lot of people but I don't think I'd have the patience. It's just not a good medium for it.

I hear you on cutting the crap, though.

mademybed123 · 02/08/2018 21:48

You receive notifications for replies to your tweets, and you can read the entire thread chronologically when it's yours.

Also one tweet from you can lead to multiple threads, multiple story lines.

Choose a character - do you mean like: hello, I’m Jeff and I’m a friendly frog.

And then you pretend to be Jeff and speak to other animals?

mademybed123 · 02/08/2018 21:54

Yes.

Pretty much.
