For traffic... Allergy in baby?

INeedMoreCakeInMyLife · 01/08/2018 20:04

So been weaning dd over last couple of weeks.. Carrots, broc, sweet potato.. Loves it.
Today a relative gave some rusk in a bowl with milk.. Again loved it.. But 20 min later has been screaming... Crying. Unsettled. Curling legs up to belly. And literally won't let us put her down. She's refused anything to drink since.. That was at 2.30pm.
Dp thinks maybe a gluten intolerance?
I've got her to sleep now across my chest but even if I attempt to move her she cries. She's not normally clingy.

How old is baby? How much was given?

INeedMoreCakeInMyLife · 01/08/2018 20:09

She said about half the bowl.
I have only ever given her veg.. Which she norm. Has when we eat in the evening. So I'm. Annoyed she gave it to her with out me knowing at her house (I didn't even buy the risks)

Rusk in cow's milk?

CobaltRose · 01/08/2018 20:29

Was the rusk in cow's milk? Could be a lactose intolerance.

Amanduh · 01/08/2018 20:35

It could be absolutely anything to be fair.

Freddiesgirl · 01/08/2018 20:37

I was told by a paeditrician that babies don't get gluten intolerance- but this may be utter rubbish! I think eggs/dairy are the two most likely ones for little ones.

SoyUnPerdedor2 · 01/08/2018 20:38

Sounds similar to my dd.
When it comes out on to her nappy, you will have a good idea if something is wrong.
If most of her poo is yellow or brown water, leaking everywhere... it could well be an allergy.

Also, watch out for any bits of eczema that appear. Dd had some on her face and arm.

Go back to the foods she has been ok with for at least a week.

Then give her a small portion of rusk or a small portion of cow milk if that's what she had before.

See if she reacts again.

If she does have coeliac, you have to keep giving her gluten so she reacts to it. The coeliac test picks up something in the reaction.

Don't eliminate a food group for ever without medical advice.
And hopefully this hasn't changed in the last couple of years since my dd had her issues.

Scrolblewomp · 01/08/2018 20:39

If you are worried keep a food diary, an allergy would likely show a more immediate reaction, allergies and intolerances are different so have a look at the Allergy UK website as its full of useful information.

Racecardriver · 01/08/2018 20:43

Do rusks even have gluten in them? I thought that they were made of rice? At any rate dairy is a more likely culprit. Has she had dairy before (for example in formula)?

Racecardriver · 01/08/2018 20:45

Try giving milk and rusk separately to see what it was. It may have just been off milk (not surprising in this heat)

Please do ring our helpline tomorrow for advice. I'm not able to answer questions but the team are really helpful and can offer advice and support. Allergy UK

Any chance she's constipated? Some pureed prunes would help that. Are there any other signs of allergy? Rash etc. Btw rusks are nutritionally bereft and full of sugar. There's no need to give rusks at all, carry on with the fruit and veg as you have been.

MrsPandaBear · 01/08/2018 20:53

It's unlikely to be lactose - I'm guessing so far either your baby is bottle fed cows milk full of lactose (which they've been OK with), or they are breastfed your milk full of lactose (which they've been OK with)?

What's the rusk made of - the top food allergies in babies are cows milk (to the protein), soya, eggs, wheat and nuts? An allergy to wheat is more likely than a problem with gluten at this age.

Most babies grow out of their food allergies so it's not all bad news if that's what it is - DD is allergic to cows milk, soya, eggs and some nuts and is just starting to outgrow them at 21 months.

INeedMoreCakeInMyLife · 01/08/2018 20:54

The rusk was made with formula milk.
I just rang to get box checked and it does contain wheat and gluten.

She's so uncomfortable and in discomfort.

R. E poos. She's always had really loose yellow ones.. ( was originally prescribed formula for cow's milk protein allergy... But she point blank refused to r drink it and he weight dropped..) but despite certain symptoms of CMPA she was gaining weigh so doc said not to worry.

I didntb give her the rusk a relative did .. I didnt want her to have that sort of thing yet so I'm not happy she was given it in the first place

I'll keep a food diary too and if anything else similar happens I'll see gp.

R e constipated.. No she's done a poo and it's her normal very very loose one.

OP posts:
SoyUnPerdedor2 · 03/08/2018 00:08

Going back to poo...
Dd always had very loose poo. Never formed as a turd until she was about 2.
But an allergy/intolerance poo is likely to be different.
Literally brown water in our case. And the stench Envy
I needed to wash the baby, her clothes, her car seat or pram and my car seat. Every time she had a poo.
Keep an eye out for any change in poo.
You know what is normal for your dc.

garethsouthgatesmrs · 03/08/2018 01:20

Just avoid for a few weeks and see. She's very young. I know several babies who seems intolerant to something at 6 months but by a year no signs of the intolerance. I would wait until at least 26 weeks and try again.

Rusk generally bet avoided anyway.

DeadDoorpost · 03/08/2018 01:29

My DS was like that when his first teeth started cutting through. Didn't want to be put down at all. The only sleep he got was on me but he'd wake up in pain every hour or so. I mistook it for bad wind (first baby). May be the same with you.
